Dealing with JWs: something helpful

I actually have the CATHOLIC ANSWERS website here to thank for helping me prepare better for debating JWs. One of the articles on this site mentions a little book that JWs use for trianing their field missionaries who go door to door. I went to amazon and found a used copy which I ordered.

I recommend everyone get this book if you regularly debate these people…it shows from the “inside”, how they are trained to handle every discussion that can come up. They are even taught how to “handle” discussions with Jews, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, etc.

Its called “Reasoning from the Scriptures” and while you can’t get it from the Watchtower if you are not JW, I’m glad I thought to check Amazon’s used book “Marketplace” where I got it, and cheap too!

**In the WATCHTOWER of March or April of 1972, in their lead article “They Shall Know that a Prophet Was Among Them,” it says that Jehovah’s [False] Witnesses are prophets.

In REASONING TOGETHER published in 1986, it says that JW’s are NOT prophets.

Question: When did the Organization lie?**

When does it not lie? The JW’s are one HUGE lie. I pity them all.

That’s really my main problem with JWs, or with any other religious group that proselytizes: when they use deception and outright lies to win converts.
 
I am sure the JW’s are lovely people. I’ve spoken to a few of them. I would have as much interest in debating points from a JW perspective as I would in debating a scientologist. I apologize to any Jehova Witnesses for my attitude.

It’s really funny that you should post this. I just got “JW’d” yesterday. I actually knew who they were before I opened the door as I saw them coming up the walkway, but decided to answer anyway (I’ve been out of work on disability for about a month, so I’m going out of my mind with boredom).

There were two women, the younger of which, who was obviously in her “training” period, did almost all the talking. I humored them for a few minutes, but when they tried to give me their literature I finally revealed that I was Catholic. At that point their demeanor changed somewhat and they simply asked if they could leave me some literature next time they were in the area, to which I replied “sure” (I’m moving in a few weeks anyway, so they can come back all they want 😉 ). It was really funny how quickly their mood changed when they found out I was Catholic, although they remained very polite.

I almost wish I would have accepted their little pamphlets though. They could have made for an interesting read.
 
When they come to my door I just point to the mezuzah and say “apology accepted”.
 
This may sound mean:blush: but I really think they are out of their mind. I remember I was dating a JW. His mother asked my background, I told her Catholic.(I was baptized, but didn’t really get a proper upbringing from my parents), she told me that they do not worship Mary and told me the many reasons for not celebrating holidays. I was 13 and listening to these people for about 1 hr made me :hypno: I am learning about different religions, but I knew this one was way off. I am debating about being Catholic. I think they are great debators, but you still know something is off when you speak with them. A FIRM no thank you will do.

My only real problem with them stemmed from what one of them did when my mother died in hospice care. I didn’t even know her (she was in another state), but she misused her position as a staffer with the national hospice corporation to find out which patients recently died, and used the contact info to mail me a handwritten letter, proselytizing me for the JWs, and included some of their tracts.

When the national hospice was notified by me about it, they were absolutely horrified. I found out from a friend who is a court-certified cult expert that they are actually trained to do that, he said they call it theocratic warfare! He said they do it for two reasons: a) to possibly gain a convert from the family, since they are seen as vulnerable due to grief, and b) they assume the family will inherit an estate, and if the family member converts to JW, they get the money too.

Its been years sense my good Jewish friend moved away ,but if I rememebr right.
It’s a Jewish religious thing. I think started as a small scroll of scripture. They are on the outside of a home.

It’s a container for a small scroll containing some of the Torah. They’re hung on gates and near doors. Some Jews will kiss them whenever they leave or come into their home.

Sort of like our St. Benedict Medals.
