Dealing With Rage

As of late I’ve been quite easily annoyed. I think a major factor in this is that my professors in my current semester are drowning me in homework that generally takes hours to complete. For example, today I was doing accounting homework that I had planned to complete this morning, but I was unable to do so because it’s confusing and time consuming. I have classes today that will dump a huge pile of homework on me, and I have a reading quiz tomorrow so I have to read the accounting chapter again to refresh my memory. My mother helped me which is great. However, the feeling of being a slave to college/homework consumed me and soon I got very angry and me and my mother were yelling at each other. I guess I feel overwhelmed.

Honestly, I don’t even want to continue college as I hate my degree and I see little to no benefits of going there. I don’t want to be rude to my parents or say things I don’t mean in my rage. I always want to stop but I always forget when the anger arises. For the most part I only express anger when I’m around my parents because I feel they can get on my nerves sometimes. However, I love them very much.

Any tips on combating this sin? Thanks!

You need to speak to a professional.

That would help tremendously.

What you describe is the average college experience. Being “a slave” to homework is quite normal. Quite frankly, thats what its often “about”. Degrees are not simply the classes they have you learn, but proof that you can stick through a course even when you don’t like it and things get tough.

Also, even if you do wish to pursue a career that doesn’t require a degree, you’re often far better off with one. That said, if you’re really not cut out for college, you need to be an adult and have that conversation with your parents.

I don’t know. I get good grades and I’m even in the honor society. I guess I’m technically cut out for college, but at the same time I feel college is a wicked master and I’m it’s slave who it loves to whip.

I’d love to go bowling with friends and read the Bible even more, but when I’m not doing homework I’m probably working so I have little to no time. I do manage to read the Bible a good amount though, probably around at least 45 minutes each day, but I sacrifice homework time for this.

You lost me at the end. Getting good grades isn’t all of what being cut out for college entails. If you must make machocistic jokes to get you through it might be an indication that while you have the brains, you may not have the disposition to be studying right this minute in your life.

Many former homeschoolers find themselves at the top of academics in college but do poor socially and are somewhat miffed by the lack of educational control they must give up. Your trips into hyperbole land when describing college are fairly common for all students, but at the same time concerning because you truly seem to want to assign blame on someone. Too much homework, unpleasing major, trouble at home…there is no one to blame here. It’s an educational experience.

I also took the time to ask my brother, who’s a cop, about his hiring. He said that his department only hires those who have degrees–BA over AA… although very few have CJ degrees (very few have easy “a” degrees, either) so you might want to do some research. There’s some drama on this thread from a police forum but I think you’d find it rather enlighting.

I think, at the root of your anger, is the fact that you want more control of your life. As an adult, you should have control over your life. Your frustration is understandable.

So how do you gain that control? Sit down with a career advisor. Make a roadmap of your goals–which can/should include a degree at this point. Sit down with a campus counceller find ways to speak to your parents about how you want to make choices. Sit down with a spiritual advisor and find ways that you can insert prayer into your busy schedule.

Mel, thnk back reflect on how many times we have told you to get a Spiritual Director.
Your RCIA experience was less than wonderful.
You have a tendency to overblow and overreact.
Don’t you attend a Community College? I’m sure that they have counselors, tutors, and mentors available just like the big schools. Being homeschooled, you probably are not accustomed to the rigor…you like to go more at your own pace. But that’s not the deal with college.
I feel as though always want people to say “oh, you’re doing fine just pray about it” because people are kind. But that WON’T help. You need to address it. Find a priest to talk to at another parish and lay it all out. Tell him everything Your worries, your questions, your tendency to get angry easily. Get real help. There’s no shame in it.

Try going to a therapist. It doesn’t mean anything’s wrong with you - we all need help from time to time. It really helped me when I was having problems in my life.

I hear alot of stress in your post, Melodionist.

Praying that God grants you peace and balance in your schedule.
🙏

I don’t think you have committed a sin. Your school work is getting harder as you get older. Now you are dealing with a job on the side and trying to squeeze in some social time (which is good). The missing part is dealing with the stress of managing all of this. Don’t feel alone. Most of grow up never realizing we have to have a plan to deal with stress. We either figure it out later or someone else (a doctor) clues us in.

Getting frustrated with the way things are going in life is not bad.

Take along walk. Daily.
