I have heard that if you die right after Baptism that you will goto straight to heaven without even purgatory. Is this true? Is this the reason why many early christians delayed their baptism before their death?

Baptism includes you in the body of Christ and is for the forgiveness of sins. Both original and personal sins you have committed. Just like in confession, although your sins may be forgiven, the penalty still exists. Purgatory is for our purification before entering heaven.
The goal of every christian is to turn away from sin and grow closer to God in His grace. But thanks to the fall from grace and the sinfullness of this world, we can never become perfect in God’s grace, certainly not the perfection required by God for heaven. So purgatory is there for us to finish the process.
Even though you are forgiven your sins through baptism and confession, even if at the last moments of your life, you still must be purified to enter heaven. As the bible tells us, nothing unclean may enter heaven.
I think if you’re going to take the chance of eternal damnation and wait until your last moments of life to be baptised, as a way of gaining a ‘loophole’ and get straight to heaven, your motivations are wrong and you’re still going to end up in purgatory, at least. Baptism doesn’t gaurantee heaven, and it’s not magic.

Yes, that is correct. You are in fact a “New Creation in Christ” after Baptism, the old person has been put off. Baptism forgives Original sin and all Personal Sins and to the degree that you are repentant possibly all Temporal Punishment. I heard this from a story from Father John Corapi. He baptized an old mafia member. The mafia member was ill and was feeling contrition for all the bad that he did. Fr. Corapi told him that if he died right after baptism he would go straight to heaven(no purgatory) because baptism is so powerful that it washes original and all temporal sin away. The old man was so amazed by that and couldn’t believe how powerful that was that he felt unworthy. Was an interesting story.Yes, that is correct.
