Greetings!

The bright daylight startled me this morning when I woke up, seeing as how it should have been darker. I struggled to determine what day it was, thinking perhaps it was a weekend. I then considered the possibility that I had taken a nap yesterday after work, and had just woken up, and that it was 7:30PM, not 7:30AM. I then remembered I had gone to see a movie last night, and it was dark when I went to bed. That killed that theory. I was late to work… by almost two hours. This is the first time I’ve been late in the two years I’ve worked there, and as a sole hourly employee who HAS to be there when the place opens (at 7), this wasn’t good. It seems, however, I will not be punished for this infraction, as I’ve always been punctual. So, to make a long story short, upon realizing I had woken up late… I proceeded to take The Lord’s name in vain not once, but probably five or six times, whilst getting dressed, running to my car, etc. You know, as if it’s His fault or something.

This got me thinking… is it not a mortal sin to take God’s name in vain? What about other mortal sins that I occasionally fall into? Do I truly understand the difference between sins and mortal sins? As someone intending on entering RCIA in the fall, and going through baptism, confession, confirmation, and communion (not sure that’s in the right order), what would happen to me if I were to die, prior to these events happening? What if I had a mortal sin on my hands? As I’m unable to confess my sins to a priest yet, how do I go about resolving these mortal sins? Would I likely go right to purgatory?

It’s hard to say. It’s important to pray every day and say an act of contrition.

Hopefully that will be enough, heaven forbid you die before you are baptized. Pray that God keeps you safe until then. God knows your circumstances…

It’s also important to try and avoid sinfulness. It’s not impossible to stop taking the lords name in vain. I myself did it. 👍

You should search the forum for mortal sins. The requirements of mortal sin are that it has to be grevious matter, you have to have knowledge that what you are doing is sinful, and you have to give full consent to commit this act. In short a mortal sin is a direct violation of one of God’s commandments.

Lastly, purgatory is a state of being. Not a place. It’s a state of purification. It’s a way that God has chosen to purify a person so that they can enter into heaven.

It’s hard to say what would happen if you died. But again, God knows your intentions. If you pray for his mercy and forgiveness and try to do the right thing, like RCIA, I’m sure He would recognize your attempts. But it’s up to Him what to do with you. :o.

I’m glad God has called you home to the Catholic Church and I’m glad that you are responding to His call . Good luck and God bless.

In oder for a sin to be mortal it must meet certain criteria one of which is that you mus know it is a sin and choose to do it anyway. My suspicion is that as you were doing this blaspheming, you were not really thinking about what you were saying but just “expressing” emotion. Once you realized what you were saying you stopped and were mortified at having done it.
This is the line then. If you KNEW what you were doing was sinful after the first time and then CHOSE to continue doing it the sin is greater. If it just kept “slipping out” then you obvioulsy have some work to do on discipline but the sin is not all that great.
It all has to do with when you realized you were sinning and what you did upon that realization.

Does that help?

Peace
