What happens with the deceased when it appears they are still “haunting” people or earthly places?

I’ve also heard that they could be demons, but I think the vast majority of time they are probably nothing at all.

I’ve heard that to, that the malicious ones are demons.

I’ve always been a believer in ghosts, and I feel the sad, sorrowful ones may very well be the spirits of those in purgatory
