Does anyone know of any good debates on audio (preferably free on the internet) between a Catholic Apologist and a SSPX, Sedevacantist or other schismatic traditionalist? I’m curious to find out more of the traditionalist thinking and reasons for leaving the Church and how Catholics can counter their positions. I know a great website full of talks and debates bringyou.to/apologetics/audio.htm but there’s nothing on there about schismatic traditionalists.
Thank you!
Jerry

Dear Jerry,

you are mistaken in lumping in the SSPX with schismatic groups. The Holy Father, the accompanying letter to the Motu Proprio, makes it clear that the SSPX is an internal matter of reconciliation within the Church.

Cardinal Hoyos has commented publicly in Zenit News that although he cannot recommend it, a Catholic who craves the Traditional Mass and Tradition Church Teachings may fulfill his Sunday Obligation at the SSPX Mass, and also said that a modest contribution to the collection would not be out of order.

Obviously, the Holy Father and the head of Ecclesia Dei do not believe that the SSPX is outside of Communion with the Church.

It is clear, as is evidenced by both their remarks, that although they do not consider the SSPX as schismatic, they do consider the SSPX to be in an irregular canonical state.

So why do you consider the SSPX to be schismatic, in contradiction of the Holy Father and the Head of the Ecclesia Dei commission?

Thank you!

Dang maurin, you could’a waited till I got back with the popcorn 😃

Hi Jerry, welcome to the TC forum. Perhaps you could find something on youtube ?

Anyhow, “schismatic traditionalist” is kind of a flamable phrase here lately, so don’t be surprised if some get emotional.

I know what you mean, though I think I’ll kick back with a good cigar.

Not to jump back in to the old schism/not schism schtick (say that three times fast), I would like to point out that the sentence does not necessarily mandate that the OP thinks SSPX is a schismatic group. It could be taken to mean he wants debates with:
  1. SSPX
  2. Sedevacantists
  3. Other schismatic groups (other than sedevancantists)
Since “other” is not defined, it could include both the preceding groups or just the most immediate.

Time to light up.

Glad you made it through the storm. Ike came up our way last Sunday and got it’s last licks in. Most of our gas and lights fleet was down your way, and we had to wait for them to come back and clean up the mess up here. No power for 5 days stunk.

It is not clear from his remarks exactly what he meant. I am sure you and Jerry will forgive me if I have misinterpreted him incorrectly. Upon re-reading his post a number of times in light of your own and i believe’s, I do remain unconvinced, however I am also certain that I could be wrong. I don’t thinks so, but I could be.

Hi there hope your Lights are back on. Good to see another from my area on here. Just across the River in New Albany In. We lost the Steeple from Our Church in the winds last Sunday. Any Way going to get some popcorn as well and sit back and watch the show that begins on this one.

No doubt. We got a pretty direct hit. I was one in 1-5% with power. My poor mother has been down for a week so far, with another 1-2 weeks to go. 😦
You all down there are in our prayers.

hi Scott, yea, power came on just before dark Friday.

Sorry to hear about the damage at your parish. We lost some roofing on one of our parish’s buildings. Huge chunks, but no one was injured thankfully. Deo gratias.

Thank you. that was a blessing as no one was injured. Father told us this morning at Mass that it would be rebuilt the same as it was we are very blessed that no one was injured as it happened about the time the Latino Mass would be letting out and it it had come completely down could have really been bad.
