Debating church on Christmas Eve

My family’s Baptist church (about 300 people who attend each week in a town of 3,000: largest church in town)) had to meet to discuss whether or not to have church services on Christmas Eve. They ultimately decided to have them, which is good, but is this common to actually debate whether or not to have church on Christmas Eve?

The whole thing struck me as odd and kind of sad.

I was Baptist for quite a few years as a child. That is the norm from what I remember. Quite a few of them have their Christmas service and Christmas Contados on the Sunday prior to Christmas. Though the prettiest service I can recall is when one actually had a Christmas eve Candlelight service.

And there are many factors, not all skip them for the same reason. So many were out of town on Christmas that it made no sense to have have one on Christmas Eve. That seemed more the reason out in the country.

The out of town thing is understandable for sure. But I’m thinking at least 50 people in a church with 300, not to mention family visiting, would make the debate silly on this.

great to have Christmas eve service. the church should make this a tradition and get rid of the debate. it does not matter if only a few shows up, Jesus would die even for one sinner. if people know it’s a tradition to have a Christmas eve service, many will join. Merry Christmas.

There are Evangelical churches that don’t consider Christmas a reason for having a church service. For some it’s because they see it as pandering to the Catholic Church which set the date for Christ’s Mass. Others see it as a family day not a day for congregational gathering. It just depends on the denomination/local church.
