Got a question for everyone. How do I convince radical protestants that the Catholic Church is not inspired by satan? You see, I’ve been debating some protestants on another site, and they are convinced that the RCC is satanic in origin. I’ve tried to debate them rationaly, but am making little headway. Any suggestions?

I would not even dignify that question with a response. They heard is hardened if they believe that.

First of all, since they are the ones making the accusation, the burden of proof is on them. Make them prove it to you. Ask them for their evidence. If you have a problem with their “evidence” tell them you’ll think about it and get back to them. Then bring the “evidence” here. There’s plenty of good debaters here who can help you with whatever they claim is wrong with the Church.

Second, they are asking you to prove a negative, that is, to prove the Church is *not *inspired by Satan. Nobody should have to prove a negative.

True but if pressed;

Do you renounce Satan and all his works? A question that demands an answer asked point blank by the Catholic Church.

… now they need to go look in Scripture where Christ was accused of the very same thing and see what He answered. If they need a hint, it involves “a house divided cannot stand”.

As much as I hate to say it don’t bother with them. The truth is that anyone who is ignorant or hateful enough to make such a claim is neither interested in intelligent discussion or in learning the truth. One would have to be so opposed to the truth that they actively avoid readily available data and so hateful as to assume the worst about over a billion people without any effort to learn the truth.

This is a person that can be neither reasoned with or appealed to by the Christian spirit. They have hardened their hearts. Pray for them because only God has the power to break through that kind of evil.

Stay calm and rational. This above all - even above coming up with a convincing argument or talking them out of this idea - will assure the lurkers that the Church is sane and good.

Whenever you’re tempted to respond to an insult “in kind,” remember the lurkers, and remember that your witness is not your words, as such, but your attitude.

If you can say, “I don’t know” in a loving and openminded manner, you’ll bring more people into the Catholic Church than if you fly off the handle and start making counter-accusations against the Protestants (tempting as that may be, at times).

Good luck. 🙂

I don’t think our job is to do the convincing, but simply the proclaiming and the teaching and the loving. The rest is in the hands of God.

Respond by laughing and asking them you any scriptural evidence what-so-ever that the Catholic Church was esablished by anyone other than Jesus…

If you are in a debate situation then every assertion and allegation must be supported by those making them. If they cannot offer solid, verifiable, proof then the allegation is shown to be rhetoric or propaganda without substance.

If proofs are provided, then sources are checked to ascertain veracity. If any fail then that is used in refutation of that sources evidence. If that is the sole source…the argument collapses. Just ask if that’s all they’ve got.

As previous posters suggest…stay calm, polite, and loving. Don’t try to convince them that they are wrong, just try to explain what we Catholics believe. Something else that might be helpful is to try to learn what they believe and point out where we agree. That might throw them “off balance” enough that their hearts might soften a little.

Good luck and God Bless!

I was over at another forum defending the deuterocanonicals and when I said that Jesus quoted from these books, I got banned for blaspheme. The one that banned me claimed to an ex-catholic.

There is nothing you can do for these people except pray for them.

Sadly that is also true. PM me when ya get a sec and tell where that was. I suspect I already know. 😉

Most Ex-Catholic turn Protestant just hate the truth…that is why many of the extremist hate and ignore history.

And there are what, 30,000 different flavours of Protestantism?

Probably not that many, since although a lot of Protestant denominations are being created all the time, they are also dying out fairly rapidly, too - a lot of these little churches don’t have much staying power.

But more than one is too many, I should think, and there were at least four major factions, along with tons of minor ones within the first ten years of the Protestant “Reformation” - I don’t think it was what Luther had in mind when he first got started, but when he set the example, everyone followed it.

Not sure why he was so surprised, though, unless he thought he was the only man born who knew how to defy established authority - and if one is not required to follow the Pope, then why must one therefore follow Luther? Since who is Luther, compared to the Pope? Might as well follow myself, they said - and that’s what a lot of them went ahead and did.

stay cool and remember that in a theological debate with with protestants your positions must be supported 100% by scripture alone. so review scripture before any debate

Don’t throw ‘tradition’ under the bus.

Convince them through love and rational discussion that you, a faithful Catholic, are not from Satan. Let them know that there are Catholic Christians. Then move from there to the Catholic Church as an institution.
