as of late, my dear wife (who is protestant), has been using the fact that she has never heard of the Catholic Church ever giving direct finacial aid to those in need as an argument against the Church. Any suggestions as to what I can tell her?

What does she mean by “direct financial aid?”

The Church has programs to help people pay medical bills, for rent and food, and so on. The Church is active in relief activities for disaster victims and famine victims.

I don’t think I understand the question. Every Catholic church I know of has ministries to aid the poor.

Or is she saying something other than the poor here?
 
What about Catholic Charities? And Mother Teresa? Catholic Missions have always been there for people to turn to (just look at the American west). Some of the first hospitals were created thanks to the Catholic Church. On a local level, our own parish has community suppers and hands out food baskets during the holidays and such as I’m sure every catholic parish does. How about the Knights of Columbus? There probably isn’t one cause out there that the Catholic Church isn’t involved in. The Catholic Church is made up of many people all over the world. It is Catholic people not church buildings that give.

It seems to have been a matter of fact thing that was not worth recording. Note that it is implied that it was Judas’ job, see Mark 14:5 and John 13:29.

Note that this appears to have been so obvious, like eating or breathing, that it was not specifically recorded. See Mt 26:9. It appears to have been Judas’ task, John 13:29.

she might wish to volunteer at the St Vincent de Paul society at her local parish, or at any of dozens of outreaches funded through Catholic Charities in your diocese and learn otherwise. Just because she has not heard of it does not mean it does not happen. If she comes to our parish M-W-F she will see thousands of dollars (from donations of parishioners) given to the poor in direct aid for utility bills and shut-off, food vouchers, medications, bus trips to hospital, VA etc., and other needs. On Tu-Th she will see used clothing as well as vouchers for new items that can’t be donated such as underwear and diapers being given out. No we do not give out cash, as most people would agree that is not prudent, but we do give out vouchers or make arrangements with local motels for homeless, pharmacies, the utility companies etc. with whom our Deacon has developed relationships for this purpose.

Zenit in the last few weeks posted the large amount the Pope has donated personally for the poor in the last year.

Catholic Relief Services worldwide, and Catholic Charities in this country, not to mention all the Catholic hospitals, social service agencies etc., and social services administered by religious orders give out millions of dollars in aid each year. The organization which provides the most care for Aids patients is the Catholic Church, under its various auspices. This is especially true in some countries of Asia and Africa where Catholics form a tiny minority of the population, but provide most of the assistance to for AIDS-HIV population.
 
What about CAFOD, also Peters Pence, given in at collections every week or at the and of the month, this money is collected in US dollars, and the pope is allowed to give it out to charity as he sees fit. Also have you ever seen a church newsletter, and it will say:

" the church raise £ xxxx"

and then underneath it will say:

“the diocese of xxxxx is a registered charity”
 
Has she ever heard of Knights of Columbus (a local KofC guy has brought my grandfather food in the past right to his door when his car was broke down and actually cooked him dinner a few times)? Our local parish also has an office with a food pantry and a place that helps out people who are in financial need. I’m not sure what the exact requirements are, but I heard that they will help you pay a few bills one or two times. Also, Catholic Charities has a HUGE building in downtown Denver where it takes in the homeless and has soup lines in all of the local parishes in downtown Denver and there are more than a few Catholic hospitals. Most downtown parishes even leave their doors open at night for the homeless to sleep in the pews when it’s really cold out. How many protestant churches leave their doors open all night?

Also, Catholic Charities was one of the first who was donating its money, resources and phone banks to the Tsunami relief aid in Indonesia.
