Very cool. Haven’t read it yet, but I love reading about early Eastern Christian Saints.

He was at the Council of Nicea and became so incensed at Arius that he punched him!

I heard about that. I think we should celebrate his feast day by punching heretics. Okay, I’m kidding, but I can understand why someone would want to. My understanding is that Arius was being very arrogant.

Yeah, and good ole St. Nick just flipped his lid. 🤣 He shouldn’t have punched Arius, but at least he showed his religious fervor and commitment to orthodox faith. St. Nicholas got into trouble, but was forgiven. Interesting story in how it played out. 🙂 He’s one of my favorite saints. We have some of his myrrh oil in a reliquary at my church. 😀

St. Nicholas wouldn’t need to punch anyone so long as he had Belschnickel at his side. That’s one dude I don’t want to mess with.

BTW, Dec. 6th is really Belschnickel Day in these parts.

They have a similar character in Ukrainian lore that accompanies St. Nicholas when he distributes gifts. Each year around the 6th, they have an event at Ukrainian parishes where St. Nicholas comes to give gifts to the children. This devil character gives a switch to anyone getting a gift from St. Nick. You’re supposed to lightly tap him with the switch. When I was a little kid (around five, I think), I got my gift then saw this big scary guy holding a bunch of switches. When he gave me one, I glared at him, kicked him in the shins, then started beating him with the switch. 😂 They had to pull me away because I was chasing him around, swinging furiously (poor teenager). I didn’t know why all the grown-ups were laughing. I’ll never forget that! One of my favorite memories from childhood. 🤣

I LOVE St. Nicholas day!!!

We had a ton of chocolate. YAY!

I was absolutely frustrated because I couldn’t find gold coins ANYWHERE.

So I found some nice imported chocolates and we had those.

Even the toddler.

Was treated to a nice amount of screaming when she realized it was finished and there was no more.
