Although there is one pedophile it is not in your face about it. He does nothing dirty.
Nailed it!

Even one of my favorite ‘modern’ cartoons, Phineas and Ferb, has questionable content, though not for every show.

I also enjoy ‘Batman: The Animated Series.’

Someone mentioned Star Trek. I forgot to mention Father Knows Best. An all-time g reat.

Really? I’ve only seen it a few times but I can’t imagine them putting anything truly inappropriate on that show.

They have pushed the line once or thrice… just about all modern shows do.

For the most part, though, it,s harmless.

In this thread we list shows that do not have indecent content.

The two shows I know of are both sitcoms:
  • Last Man Standing
  • Modern Familty
Modern Family??? Before that show premiered, I saw a preview clip online. It was when the TWO GAY MEN were bringing home “their” ADOPTED DAUGHTER. TWO GAY MEN…Not something I’d watch with JESUS in the room!

Last Man Standing I have seen and its a decent show - I love Tim Allen.

I’d rather watch Happy Days or the cheesy Brady Bunch than Modern Family!

I am curious… would you say that Harry Potter or LOTR is bad because there is sorcery or magic, which is also a sin?
Not the same; if the universe worked like in Harry Potter or LOTR, magic would not be sinful.
I am trying to understand this reasoning. If The Hobbit is indeed indecent I have to stop reading books and watching movies and T.V. altogether. Or is being gay worse than violence and sorcery?
Again, the comparison is ill-made. Furthermore, it is not as if the characters take some perverse pleasure in violence in LOTR. It is a fantasy setting; the author is allowed to explore different societal conceptions of morality in such a work.

MF is set in the modern era, and, from what I gather, the homosexual relationship is not problematized in any way. That is definitely an issue.

I am curious… would you say that Harry Potter or LOTR is bad because there is sorcery or magic, which is also a sin? There is no unanimous opinion that the Church has ruled about any of these.

I like MF because it shows familial love and is uplifting. It breaks the cynical view espoused in media.
:rotfl:

LotR is by no means evil. Tolkien was a devout Catholic (his eldest son is even a priest!). Tolkien even worked Catholic symbolism into it. Lembas and the Eucharist, Frodo/Gandalf/Aragorn as priest/prophet/king, Elf-magic and the sacraments, the Flame of Anor and the Holy Spirit…

Oh, and my :twocents: on MF. I’ve watched it, my sociology class loves it, and I don’t particularly mind the gay couple. They don’t really do anything other than raise Lily and be a source for plots and humor sometimes. Oh, and IIRC, the grandpa dislikes the fact that his son’s gay

Last Resort, but there are only a few episodes left. This show is magnificent, inspiring, and beautifully written and acted, and Christians should be put on bread and water and be assigned to peel a thousand potatoes each with dull knives because we didn’t support it and it’s going off the air. We whine for decent shows, and then when they are finally aired, we don’t watch them, and they get cancelled. So we Christians get what we deserve–nothing, or very old re-runs.

Go On. It’s a wonderful throwback to old shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and *The Bob Newhart Show *(both the Chicago one and the Vermont one). There is a lesbian in the group, but it’s not “in your face”. I’ve seen about two “dirty” jokes, and that’s IT, and the all the rest of the dialogue is so funny and tight and touching. It’s interesting that all of the secular critics are expressing amazement that Matthew Perry is actually part of such a “decent” and heartwarming show–yes, I saw at least one critic use the word “decent.” Perry says, “Now that I’m getting older, I just want to be a good person.” It shows!–I have wiped away tears in every single episode of Go On. I need this show right now, since my dad is dying of cancer. I just hope it doesn’t go bad on us; some shows start really decent, but then when the ratings slip because regular people are looking for dirt and slime, and decent Christians don’t bother to watch the show because of perhaps one little slip up, the show starts getting racier and filthier and eventually, it’s part of the trash heap. C’mon, fellow Christians, watch this show, please!

You’re saying Modern Family is a show that does not have indecent content? Really? That runs contrary to everything I have ever heard about the show. 🤷
LOL. I had to go back and re-read the thread to see if I misunderstood.the original post.

Again, just because there are gay men does not make it evil. As I said they do it with decency. MF is an uplifting show, not a cynical one, like most sitcoms. Instead of a clip , see the show and judge for yourself.

Sorcery is also a GRAVE sin but people don’t mind children reading fantasy books with magic, do they? Obviously it is almost impossible to read books or watch drama without something unwholesome, since conflict is the main element that drives plot.

I agree with you. If you’re looking for the “perfect show,” forget it. Think about this–in The Sound of Music, the young girl comes in from a tryst with her boyfriend–she’s soaking wet, beautiful, and has a rather curvacious figure that really stands out in the wet dress. I’m sure there are young men and perhaps women who struggle with sexual temptation during that scene. Now, IMO, the scene wasn’t necessary. The director could have cast a rather plain or homely girl in the role, and her dress could have been kind of dowdy and loose-fitting so as not to show off her figure, and they could have only showed her from the neck up after she came in from the rain–and she wouldn’t have had to come in from the rain, she could have talked to her boyfriend from her window.

But they chose to make the scene rather provocative. Now does this make *The Sound of Music *“indecent?” I should hope not!!

The old TV shows also had objectionable moments. I love The Honeymooners, but I really have a difficult time when huge Ralph pounds his fist and says, “One of these days, Alice, POW, right in the kisser!” I don’t find this funny at all–it’s abuse, and a lot of women have died from getting beat up by their husbands. It bothers me that this was “the way things were back then.” That’s scary! But I don’t let this wreck the entire show for me–I think the show is brilliant, even with the flaws.

Same for the two shows I recommended above. In Last Resort, there is a scene where, after a tense defusing of a live bomb, the female officer and the Navy Seal “get it on” on the beach. You don’t see much. Now, IMO, this scene is realistic–the officers and sailors on the show are in a horrific pressure cooker, and people react different ways to pressure. This kind of scene is not shown constantly on the show–THAT’S the difference between this show and so many others–the show is not an excuse to show illicit sex. Both the female officer and the Navy Seal recognize after the act that they have done something “wrong” or at least, unacceptable. One racy scene should not make Christians turn up their noses. After all, this show is about the Navy, not about a seminary!

That does not change the fact that a gay couple is not problematized at all. For those who feel strongly that the media is attempting to normalize gay relationships, this is unsurprisingly an issue. It is one element of the show, but that does not change the fact that the gay couple is used in the marketing, are recurring characters, etc. They are not a one-off scene or something.

It is completely different. Sorcery in those books is nothing like sorcery in the real world; if the real world functioned like those fantasy worlds, sorcery would be morally permissible.

Absolutely agree. This is why I am extremely wary of ANY modern shows. I find myself watching only cooking and woodworking programs, and certain shows on Antenna and Cozi TV.

Many nights my husband and I turn on TV Land to watch “The Cosby Show” and “Mash”. On the Hallmark Channel we found “Happy Days”. Through the Christmas holidays the Hallmark Channel had a lot of good movies. You knew how they turned out but all had a wonderful story. No sex, violence or language that was offensive. We enjoyed watching them. We also watch the Coast Guard Shows (Coast Guard Florida and Alaska) makes you proud to be an American!!

I see your point.

I do feel that there is a disconnect here though. We are able to put up with violence, murder and other sins in the media, but if a gay man is a main character we are suddenly disapproving.

At any rate I will not watch it anymore, so thank you. God above all things!

Once Upon a Time is a decent show, but I was a tad turned off by the opening scene of the first episode they aired since the show returned after it took a break for Winter. Doesn’t mean I will stop watching it…its the first show on ABC I’ve watched every Sunday since Lois and Clark’s 2nd season…which I got into mid 2nd season.

A show like Happy Days would never make it modern times…especially since Mom is a housewife and Dad is the only one that works.

If I need a decent show, I can turn on The World Over or Journey home on EWTN…no fears of trash on either of those! 🙂

I agree with you.

I think we can trace the wide-spread acceptance of “gay marriage” today back to the show Will and Grace. I can still remember the controversy, and all the media praise that finally, a gay man was being portrayed as a normal, likeable citizen.

Of course, we all know many gay people who are likeable, good citizens. But “normal?” Not according to the Church teachings.

Over the last ten years or so, there has been a huge PR campaign, especially on television, to portray homosexuals as “one of us.” The effects of this PR campaign are devastating. Nowadays, if a person objects to “gay marriage,” they can actually be fired for “harassment” at work. And churches, organizations, and individuals who object to the practice of homosexual sex are condemned by much of society as “extremists,” and portrayed as “dangerous.”

That’s one reason I really like the show, Saturday Night Live. Amazingly, they still manage to present some very dated and not very appealing portrayals of homosexuals and lesbians, and nobody says “boo” to them! The extremely popular character “Stefon” is an example. There is no way that anyone can say that Stefon is an admirable character that every little boy wants to grow up to be. He’s kind of creepy and definitely “on the make” when it comes to other men. He’s very sweet, and I really like him as a character. But definitely not a role-model and definitely not “normal”. How does SNL do this?! If a “Christian group” portrayed homosexuals like Stefon, they would be castigated! But SNL gets away with it. Good for them!

Thank you for your honesty. I appreciate knowing the truth about how posters here at CAF feel about gay people.
