As an idea it didn’t arise until the enlightenment period. But to to say that it has less validity than religion that is older is like saying when u get ill, taking penicillin is less valid than cutting open ur head. Just because the 2nd method is older than the 1st.
The book of Wisdom, written a few hundred years BC refers to atheists and nature worshipers (Chapter 13:1-9).

And I’m pretty sure that there are various other Old Testament and New Testament references to those who believe in no God. I don’t typically keep track of this stuff when I stumble across it.

But agree…older doesn’t make better necessarily, or vice versa.

porkscratchings;2778031.:
My next q would be - how many atheists do u personally know? Many theists don’t know any atheists, but condemn all of us as immoral filth peddlers, thieves, murderers, etc. I have many theists among my friends including catholics, and I don’t think people are less intelligent or delusional because they are theists. It depends on the individual.

I think those (whether theists or atheists) that go on some kind of crusade to wipe out the belief system that they don’t like - are the ones who are delusional (anyone who thinks evil monks/nuns of religion or secret covens of atheists are out to take over the world must be delusional), and lack intelligence (anyone who can’t see that bad apples in any group don’t represent the whole group has gotta have low IQ).

The character of an individual can express itself thru a person’s action and thoughts. A good person will express that goodness through everything they do, including religion. A bad person will do likewise. There are good catholics and good atheists. There are also bad catholics and bad atheists. I think a person cannot be regarded as being good or bad based solely on their faith or lack of.
I agree with the general issue here I would ask you to realize theist and atheist simply are not separate groups! I have always contended atheist would (and do) but forth a theist face to the public, and vis versa. All people have doubts both ways.
Why? It is a difficult thing for anyone to establish, no matter whether they are theists or atheists. Theists look to their faith for the answers, atheists work it out as they go along or look at human societies. It seems to me the difference is that theists like to have answers worked out for them but atheists like to work out the answers themselves. .
And thus one of the big problems how can an atheist argue his morals/ethics are anything other than his personal boundaries regardless of what he chooses to include or exclude in those persoanl boundries.

A second problem is the atheist seems to reaffirm Natural Moral Law which claims the atheist will desire a moral live, his problem is he must deny this Natural Moral Law because he has no man to point to who could have installed the Law
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these approaches, but this doesn’t mean that one approach is better than the other
on this we disagree

The book of Wisdom, written a few hundred years BC refers to atheists and nature worshipers (Chapter 13:1-9).
But does the author of the book mean atheists as in the type we know today or atheists, as in folks who don’t worship the author’s God (but may worship some other god)? Some theists argue their religion is the only true faith and worshippers of other gods don’t actually worship god at all but demons or trees, etc. Not worshipping a particular god is not the definition of an atheist.

I presume u are reading the English translation of the text. The word chosen by translators don’t always correctly represent the word in the original language. Sometimes words may be inserted in the original text for political reasons or to make the holy text agree with one person/group’s beliefs, regardless of what the text actually says. I have known this happen with the Jehovah’s Witnesses - they have deliberately picked English words to make their beliefs seem like they are based on the bible. Feminists have deliberately mistranslated and inserted words in the Gnostic gospels to make it seem like Jesus kissed Mary Magdalene on the mouth. This is their attempt to ‘prove’ that catholic church should allow women priests and priests to get married.

The translator may have deliberately put the word atheist in the translation to make it suggest that God condemns atheist back in BC when in fact the Bible makes no mention of atheists at all. The catholic makes no reference to atheists until some time around the Edgardo Mortara affair where the popes condemned atheism along with judaism and liberalism as ‘the evils of modernism’.

Think about this how could you select disobedience if you had real faith? Offered eternal salvation verses knowledge(Adam) or attention (Cain), how could they make their selection? I think there had to be a loss of faith (my opinion)
I can tell my folks to get lost and do my thing without having any doubts about their love for me. Lucifer has seen God, so it can’t be said he has no faith in God. It’s more like he didn’t fancy being told what to do by God. Adam was offered eternal salvation but the serpent offered what seemed like a good prospect and Adam was tempted. It’s like a person going on a diet to lose a few pounds to improve their health. They get tempted by junk food, but this does not mean they stop believing in the importance of a diet and healthy eating. Often the person will say to himself ’ I know this is bad for me, but…’

I think that faith is not the issue but temptation and the need to have immediate gratification is. Its like: I know I’ll do better in my exams if I stop in and revise but going out and having fun is sooo much better than doing calculus. 😛

I understand what you’re saying about people who don’t worship the author’s God.

But I doubt very much that any translator would have focused on modifying words specifically to condemn atheists. Perhaps someone else here knows Greek or Latin and could comment on this.

As I said, I don’t keep track of this stuff, but my sometimes faulty memory says that there’s something in the book of Acts as well which addresses atheists - as in not believing in any god or God.

I don’t believe in atheists.

I have never seen one.

They don’t exist.

Oh sure…there are people who claim to be atheists. but they are not really atheists.

People claim to be vampires, also. But vampires do not exist and neither do atheists.

I can prove that atheists do not exist using simple logic.
Code:
  1. No one in their right mind would spend millions of dollars trying to convince others that a fictional character is not real - not if they really believed he was fictional or mythical?
           a. Have you ever heard of anyone suing in court to prevent public school teachers mentioning the Big Red Dog? Tooth Fairy? Sand Man? Rumpelstilskin?
           b. Have you ever met any adult (of average or above intelligence) willing to spend more than two seconds trying to convince you that a fictional character was fictional? Try it sometime. They will just roll their eyes and walk away....or maybe ask what the joke is. But they are not going to waste time arguing with you.
            c. Do you know any adult who will become angy with you just because you say you believe in a fictional character?
Atheists don’t exist. If they really didn’t believe in God, they wouldn’t waste time and money trying to kill Him -again.

I agree with the general issue here I would ask you to realize theist and atheist simply are not separate groups! I have always contended atheist would (and do) but forth a theist face to the public, and vis versa. All people have doubts both ways.
I think u are generalising a bit. Some people might pretend because they feel uncomfortable to reveal doubts in front of other people, but not everyone. I don’t live in a country where I have to pretend to be an atheist, while secretly doubting it all. I don’t doubt atheism - it fits me like a glove, and I am comfortable with it. I don’t think to myself ’ maybe God exists…’ because as far as I know, there’s no evidence for God.
And thus one of the big problems how can an atheist argue his morals/ethics are anything other than his personal boundaries regardless of what he chooses to include or exclude in those persoanl boundries.
And how can any theist argue that his choice of religion is anything but his personal boundaries, regardless of whether he is a sede vacantist, TLM, Novo Ordos, liberal or cafeteria catholic? If u have feminist/liberal tendencies in your views, u are not very likely to go for LTM catholicm are u?
A second problem is the atheist seems to reaffirm Natural Moral Law which claims the atheist will desire a moral live, his problem is he must deny this Natural Moral Law because he has no man to point to who could have installed the Law
All laws are man made - especially religion based law which comes off books written by men long dead. This means your natural moral law is also man-made, like it or not.

Most people try to live good lives regardless of what they believe. But that does not equate to acceptance of religion based natural moral law. Religion based law is intolerant to any perceived difference. Very few religions respect the non-believer, fewer religions give non-believers equal rights as believers. Where is the morality in condemning a person based solely on belief, and not what crime that person has actually committed? Is it morality to assign less worth to people who don’t believe in the same faith, to make them pay extra taxes, wear badges as sign of their low status, pass laws to make it acceptable to persecute them, and to deny them respect and dignity?

If this is morality, then I reject it totally. I choose another morality that makes me respect all people regardless of anything that makes them different to me. Confucius puts it better than me: ’ That which is repugnant to u, refrain from doing to another’. That’s all the moral law I need.

Equally, no one would spend millions of dollars telling the rest of us that Christianity is the true faith, as the truth doesn’t need an expensive advertising campaign fronted by churches all over the world and priests excommunicating anyone who disagree.

Quite a few US citizens believe they have been kidnapped and impregnated by UFO. Still many others believe Jedi is an actual religion. These guys would sue u if u dared tell them they are talking rubbish. There’s a lot of strange people out there.

They would - if they felt u were taking the view of u being Darth Vader just a tad too seriously.

Yes - I once believed in the tooth fairy and had an invisible friend. My dad worried and suggested therapy, my cousin laughed and suggested a chainsaw.

Besides - why would anyone start a thread on defending atheism if atheists don’t exist? What would u be defending against?

Quote porkscratching: “Besides - why would anyone start a thread on defending atheism if atheists don’t exist? What would u be defending against?”

Which is why I would never start a thread like this. 🙂

p1: Atheists are God (see Mannyfit75 above)
p2: Atheists don’t exist (see Ginger2 above)

Conclusion: God does not exist.

Wow! Looks like my work here is done… 😃
You really think I what I wrote is literal? You ought to know what I wrote is figurative speech. When I said that atheist had made themselves God, or should I say gods because they admit to themselves they do not believe God. They prefer that the destiny of man is up to mankind.

Man can do without God. Atheism denial of a supreme being, is only an excuse so they can do whatever they want.

In the majority of atheistic society like the Communists, they kill millions of people, like those in the Former Soviet Union.

Then where are the scads of news articles about the roving atheist street gangs who rob banks, shoot up in day cares, have sex hanging from church steeples, et cetera et cetera?

Totalitarian regimes do not kill people because they’re religious; they kill them if that religion is something they cannot control, and anything they cannot control is a danger to their existence. Notice how China has a state-controlled Church, even though it professes to be atheist. Nobody is killed for belonging to the Chinese Catholic Church; instead, people are hunted out for belonging to the Roman Catholic Church, because Beijing does not have the Vatican under its thumb. And there have been plenty of religious totalitarian governments: Francisco Franco enforced Catholicism, Elizabeth I forcibly converted her subjects to Protestantism to try to break the Pope’s control (and Mary made them all become Catholic again), and so on and so forth. Totalitarian governments killing people over matters of belief is not nearly as one-sided as you seem to imagine.

Death is feared because it is the ultimate unknown. Belief systems that provide answers for this unknown is an effective salve as it resolves the fear of dying and not knowing what happens to us after death. Most believers are assured by their faith that they have a good stab at getting to somewhere decent after death, in some cases even when they do something horrible to someone else. Example: the Islamic terrorists’ belief that they will enter paradise as martyrs if they die killing unbelievers.
To be fair though, some atheists do proclaim to know what happens after we die. Nothing. There is no brain activity and our body decomposes. Oblivion. If you’ve heard some other belief, I’d be interested in knowing more about it.

As for Islam, I don’t know enough about it on this particular topic to comment. It is enough that Catholicism is a worldwide mainstream religion to make the comment by the atheist inaccurate. Having a good stab at getting to heaven is a far cry in my view from providing comfort to those who fear death.
Fear of eternal punishment does not come into it. Fear is only relevant if eternal punishment exists - to an atheist, things only exist if they can be observed and/or proven.
Well, that is one of the points I’m making. Fear of eternal punishment, which is a function of death, doesn’t enter the equation for atheists. So fear of death, if any, must be based upon something else. Maybe you are saying that since we can’t observe from the perspective of the person that died what happens after death, we can’t really know. Frankly, I think that’s a good insight, and one that is consistent with atheism.

That being said, I have to disagree that atheists believe things exist only if they can be observed or “proven,” a very indefinite term. As I discussed in this thread before you became involved, there are all kinds of things atheists accept without proof. That is true even in the realm of the observable.
Atheism is no help if someone is scared to die - atheism can’t provide easy answers to what happens when we die. How this supposedly deals with the fear of death, I don’t know.
If I’m understanding you correctly then I believe you can assert this and still be consistent. I’m not sure all atheists can though. The materialistic mindset leads to the conclusion that once the brain waves stop for a certain period of time, there is no more consciousness or awareness ever again. That is proof enough for some.
It’s hard to say how many I personally know. I have many friends and acquaintances who give no express indication nor profess to believe in God. I have a few who claim that God is a myth. I don’t find the latter group to outwardly commit more immoral acts than I would - say - some who proclaim to believe that God exists. The reasons they’ve given for not believing in God are weak in my opinion. But if I thought otherwise I wouldn’t be a Catholic.

I disagree. The world view of most atheists I’ve debated do not support the ability to make judgments about what constitutes good character from a bad character. The best I’ve heard is a John Stuart Mill type utilitarianism, and even that ends either in arbitrariness or internal contradiction. You may have a different method of justifying such character judgments. I’m interested in knowing.

The Chinese state run Catholic just ordained a bishop that had Pope’s blessings.
Pope Benedict XVI approved the ordination of the new archbishop of Beijing, Joseph Li Shan, the Vatican stated on Sept. 21, hours after the ceremony took place at Immaculate Conception Cathedral (South Church) in the Chinese capital.
Also that day, Archbishop Fernando Filoni, the third-highest Vatican official as substitute (sostituto) to the secretariat of state and a long-time expert on China-Holy See relations, spoke with journalists in Rome. He said the installation of the new bishop, recognized both by the Vatican and the Chinese government, “is undoubtedly a positive sign.”
The Vatican considers Beijing an archdiocese, while the government-approved church authorities in China, who conducted the ordination, recognize only dioceses.
The nomination of bishops is a still a vexed question between the two sides, Archbishop Filoni acknowledged, but he said the ordination of Bishop Li “is a positive fact, a first page, we hope it is the (first) page of a long story, a long chapter, of a new reality.”

Those were done by Secular governments. Though, I never would endorse their actions when the rights of individuals are threatened. The Church then doesn’t condemned forced conversions.

Read your Kant! 🙂 Utilitarianism is fine on the chalkboard but useless in general practice. ‘Natural law’ is a nice way of saying ‘because God said so’, or, for the nonbeliever, ‘because I said so’ – no depth, no meaning, just fiat, divine command and the epicycles looped around it by humans. With the Categorical Imperative, though, we start to get somewhere.

So Franco, Elizabeth, and Mary (and Cromwell, and others) were totally secular rulers who believed in a separation of Church and State? Are governments only religious if it’s convenient for you?

It was actually done on 21 SEPT 07.

No. You’re confusing Divine Law and Human Law with Natural Law. “God says so”, like in the 10 commandments, is Divine Law.

Every law, to be a law, must have a lawgiver.

Human Law is the one with the least depth. Human Law is whatever the majority thinks is good at the time, like slavery. It changes as the wind changes. Or as whimsical tyrants make decrees “…or else.” Both the laws and the “or else” parts can change with time and place.

Natural Law is written the hearts (consciences) of every human. That’s why elements of it pop up in virtually all cultures. If you wish to believe that this was somehow naturally selected after random mutations integrated it into our genes, and that all the cultures that didn’t get the genes died out, I can go with that for the moment. Exactly how God did it, I don’t care.

Divine Law is e.g. the 10 commandments.

Both the Divine Law and the Natural Law don’t change with time. The lawgiver in both cases is God, so that’s plenty deep. And if you ignore these laws, you can see the results in a society gone nuts.

The Natural Law can be accessed by reason, and the Divine Law sort of came along as a friendly reminder just in case we don’t want to use reason.

Well, that’s my back of the envelope explanation, and pretty much all I know about it. Hey, Nementhe is supposed to be an expert on this.
