To Aaron780…

I hope that you won’t “throw the baby out with the bath water” and move on to the next post when you see by my profile that I am not a Catholic, because I have what I hope is helpful advice for you. None of it will go against your beliefs. I promise. 👍

Tell these friends and family members, as a group if possible, or perhaps by letter… that you have something very important to communicate to them, and you hope they will listen quietly, with respect and no interruptions, because you wish to say it once only. Speak with clarity, strength and kindness. Tell them that after years of prayer and reflection, you have made the decision to actively follow your heart instead of to passively sit back and watch the world go by in a Church or religion where you felt you could go no farther towards what you know in your heart to be the truth. Such a choice is not to be taken lightly by anyone, but through research/investigation and prayer (is this what is meant by the term discernment?) you are as sure as you can be that the path you have been called to walk is the right one for you, and you are taking it with anticipation and joy.

Tell them that by the behaviors they are displaying, they are showing themselves to be bullies, and that this is unacceptable and inappropriate. When your heart, mind and soul are in harmony such as yours are, your journey is not their concern. It’s yours. Your loved ones have choices to make, within the boundaries you set.

They can continue to be family/friends by accepting and witnessing your walk. Those who are religious can pray for you with love as they always have (even if that means they silently pray for you to change your mind! LOL), and in turn, you will pray for them. However, all of them - religious or atheist - are to keep insults to themselves. They can cut themselves off from you if they wish, because although you love them and want them in your life, you do not love what they are doing. It is not required of you to accept painful harassment from them under the guise of loving you. Tell them that cruelty and ignorance is neither generous nor caring. Real intelligent discussions - or questions without insults aimed at you or your faith - would be welcome and even enjoyed, but the minute it crosses the line and strays away from respectful educational discourse, the subject will be dropped/changed. If your personal boundaries are not respected by them, you will have to walk away until they get themselves under control (because it is not appropriate to enter into a battle of wits with an unarmed person - LOL - just a little levity!).

Moral human beings believe it is good to do good in the name of good. If your family/friends continue to insist that “all churches are paved in gold” and believers do nothing to help the poor, needy, etc., tell them that you have made it your personal quest to do so. It is their job as well, as citizens of the world and as members of whatever faith/Church they follow (if any). You have made a choice to actively support that which is positive, and to work to eliminate that which is negative, via that which you have chosen as your Church and your faith… and that deserves respect, not insults.

One member of my Clan tells those who ask it of him that he has chosen not to follow any organized religion. (He was born/raised R.C., participated as an altar boy, etc.) It is also his choice not to press this on anyone, or insult anyone for doing otherwise. In fact, he supports the freedom of all to make their own choices of religion, or no religion should it come to that. Such is the path your critics should be taking, but they’re not. If they are arguing simply for the sake of argument, then although you may feel better “arguing back at them” – nothing you say or do will make a real difference to them. You said that maybe next time you won’t be so polite. Just keep in mind that it would not be appropriate to lower yourself to their level. Engage only with intelligence and facts, and of course, your faith, and love.

May you be safe, happy and blessed in your choice. Namaste.

Thanks for your kind words, and just because your not Catholic doesnt mean I wont read your post, I respect all religions mate, I admit I dont know much about your religion, But if thats what makes you happy then im happy, Im not here to judge anyone, God bless and take care:thumbsup:

I think it is St. Paul who says that we should give an answer once or twice, then leave it.
You don’t really have to have an answer when persecuted, as Jesus was silent when persecuted, but He said that we shouldn’t prepare an answer ahead of time, but that the Spirit
would help us to answer in time of persecution.

God bless you!

what was the new life for the churches of the church in the crusades?

Hi everyone, Ive just got a question about defending my faith, If anyone has read my previous posts at all, You’ll know that im finally getting confirmed in a few weeks, Now my journey up this point hasnt exactly been easy at times, Not the learning or going to mass and seeing the Father, Thats been the best part, But its more whats happened with family and friends which has been the hardest, Im not lucky enough I guess like some Catholics who have been brought up by it and are surrounded by Catholics, My family is a mixture of Prodestants, Non practicing Prodestants and athiests, and thats pretty much the same with friends, I will be the only Catholic, Ive had to put up with alot of criticism from all corners, Ive got one person in my family who wont even talk to me now, Ive felt very lonely at times, my only sanctuary is when I go to mass and im surrounded by Catholics, I dont know why it has to be like this, I dont push my ideas on other people, I dont judge them on their beliefs, but because I want to be Catholic im looked upon lke im some weirdo.

Today for example we had a mothers day breakfast and again I was lectured of all things bad about Catholicism, I didnt say anything like I usually do, I dont want to infame the situation, I just sat their and let them have their go, Things that were said were like “Catholicism is dying” …“Catholics are hypocrites”…“Prodesticism will be the largest Christian religion soon”…“Catholics are the richest organization in the world yet give nothing the poor”…“most Catholic priest are pedophiles”…and so on. Then the athiets want to have a go as well… “Jesus has never been proven”… " people believe in God because they are scared of the truth"…" The church was created for wealth and to keep the people in line" and blah blah blah!!! These are things that get thrown at me on a regular basis, and at times I admit I get pretty down by it, I Pray to Jesus to help me and keep me strong and he does, I will not move an inch from what I believe, I love the Catholic church immensely and I want to defend it.

After all that I want to ask is their things I can tell these people that could put them back in there place a bit, I can only take so much, Today I felt so offended and had anger growing in me with the rubbish they were saying about Catholics, but yet again I sat there and took it, I want to scream, WE are the ONE true church of Christ not your break away watered down versions of it!!! Theirs nothing wrong with defending Catholicism and our faith is their? I really dont want to be like this, but at times I feel im pushed into a corner and I want to fight back.

So are their any good one liners or things I can say which might make them back off and leave me alone or do I just take it and hope over time they will accept it?
I don’t have any one liners. But maybe something here will help forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=10755975&postcount=23 This is why one needs to be Catholic.

If there is still push back from these folks one could always ask a few questions
  • do you believe in hell?
  • do you know how easy it is to go there?
Commit the following sins [Galatians 5:19-21 (Douay-Rheims Bible, Galatians Chapter 5)

Note: Paul isn’t talking to pagans. He’s talking to the Church. None of this OSAS baloney. None of this I’ve taken Jesus into my heart … Scripture never says any of that . None of those sins are difficult to commit. One of those sins he mentions is division from the Church. If one dies in that sin, and let’s face it none of us knows when our time is up, Paul says things could get hot for that person who divides or remains divided from the Church. i.e. the Catholic Church. :coolinoff:

Jesus said if you love me keep my commandments. Including doing the following [John 17:20-23 (Douay-Rheims Bible, John Chapter 17)

Regarding perfect unity. Everybody knows who invented the protestant sects and when they started. Protestantism is division on steroids. God didn’t start any of them. He’s not a God of confusion. As one can see from scripture, division from the Catholic Church which Jesus established and gave all His promises to, is condemned, so where does that leave Protestants whose spiritual father is Luther, 1500+ years after Our Lord established His Church?

This may not change anybody’s mind who is on the attack, but I’d bet it will give them something to think about regarding their own situation.

Thanks for your help, please understand though, I just feel a bit uneasy saying things like this, aspecially to family members, I love them and dont want them to go to hell, infact I dont want anyone to go there, I pray to Jesus a lot for these people who dont believe in him, I just hope he can forgive their ingnorance and that he understands the world we live in today, not everyone including myself have been brought up in stable loving families that are surrounded by Catholics, kids can be dragged up, not being tought the right things from the start is all im trying to say…

I understand.

Let’s look at this another way. If you’re cornered again, I merely gave you some responses you could use from scripture and the ECF’s all referenced for anyone to easily check for accuracy.

here’s what you described as the climate you’re experiencing

“Ive had to put up with alot of criticism from all corners, Ive got one person in my family who wont even talk to me now, Ive felt very lonely at times, my only sanctuary is when I go to mass and im surrounded by Catholics, I dont know why it has to be like this, I dont push my ideas on other people, I dont judge them on their beliefs, but because I want to be Catholic im looked upon lke im some weirdo. Jesus summed up the entire law and the prophets with 2 commandments

  1. *]love God with your whole heart, soul, mind, body, and strength
    *]love your neighbor as yourself

What if Paul knowing what he knew, via the Holy Spirit inspiring him, didn’t pass that knowledge onto his listeners, teaching them truth what God wanted taught, both about how to attain heaven and avoid hell, and instead kept quiet…for fear of offending his listeners, would he be showing love?

My family is mixed faiths as well. When I was confronted, and this was an all out attack at a family get together, I was ready. They opened that door not me. And I responded to them exactly what I gave you. Once it was delivered, with charity of course ;), then I figured it’s up to them to do with the information as they see fit. But one things for sure, if they thought they could claim ignorance before we talked, they couldn’t claim ignorance after we talked. 🙂

bottom line, you know the best way to handle your situation. When the issue comes up again, you’ll be able to do as Peter said

    1 Pet 3:
13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right? 14* But even if you do suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence; 16 and keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God’s will, than for doing wrong.

Aaron,

This will not fit in one line but I thought it might help.

Ask and state the following
  1. All religions speak of things that we cannot directly see or verify and that is what is valuable about them (salvation, heaven, hell, sin, forgiveness of sins, God, Angels etc)
  2. Even Atheism (more accurately naturalism) speaks of things that we cannot see by stating that “There is nothing beyond what we cannot see”
  3. All of these claims, including that of Atheism, are therefore claims regarding things we cannot see.
  4. Therefore we should not believe in any of these claims unless there is reason to think one of them true.
  5. I am Catholic because a person named Jesus died and rose from the dead, showing clearly that there is something more than we can see (a life where we just live and die), and that he has power to control that (because he came back to life by himself after being killed)
  6. I know that this event took place because all of his Apostles that saw him risen, were ready to die for that claim and did die under the persecution of the Jews and Roman empire. I cannot ask for more testimony regarding an event that I have not seen firsthand than have people who claim to have witnessed it willing to die that this event did take place.
  7. Therefore I believe that it is reasonable to hold that Jesus did die and rise from the dead and therefore I conclude that his teachings are worthy of belief
  8. Since I cannot directly talk to Jesus today, one reasonable alternative for me to learn his teachings is to turn to his Apostles
  9. But since his Apostles are not here today, my only alternative is to learn from the Successors of these Apostles who have been handed down what was taught by Jesus and the authority to teach from it.
  10. These Successors of Apostles are found in the Catholic Church. Therefore I assent to the Catholic Church, her commands and all things that she teaches (Tradition, Scripture, laws).
  11. If anyone wants to object, please tell me why you are a better authority regarding things we cannot see compared to the Catholic Church.
If anything, that will at least make them think a bit before they attack you and give you a reasonable line of defense to work with. Otherwise, they might start to pepper you with random questions that might be hard to defend. The above stands on its own and you can keep pointing out that regardless of what they say, if the above stands, your belief is reasonable.

Thanks for the advice steve b, Eufrosnia and everyone else, its been very helpful, Ive also had a lot of help from my local Priest who ive been seeing once, sometimes twice a week for about 3hrs at a time for the past 6months or so and hes tought me a lot, Hes been a Priest since the late 60s and his knowledge is unbelievable, hes a good man, ive also struck up a bit of a friendship with him over that time as well, I havent done the RCIA course, Ive already been baptised, just been seeing the father a lot and going to mass about 2 or 3 times a week, Ive read some posts in here saying its rare to get tought by a priest on a weekly basis, Is that true? I guess ive been lucky in that regard.

The father said im ready anytime now to recieve my confirmation and eucharist, Its going to be next month some time when my mum returns from overseas, I want her to be there for it, I really cant wait now! The reconciliation is going to be tough though, its my first one in 35yrs so its going to take some time lol, the father has told me not to be scared and to tell him everything, he said I cant change my past anymore but I can change the future, to get this off my chest will be a huge relief, their is one sin that ive done which im shockingly ashamed of, I was in a dark period of my life and I made a massive mistake, I still think about it everyday and the regret makes me feel sick at times, My girlfriend at the time didnt think much of it but I do! I hope God can forgive me. Anyway Ive got mass tonight for the 6pm vigil, Cant wait!

When we repent, God forgives! God bless you in your journey to Him Aaron. 🙂

Yes, it is a great blessing to have a priest speak with you, one on one, so frequently!

Thanks Dorothy, the father has helped me through this so much, he emails me all the time and calls through the week to see if im ok as well, like I said hes a good man, and for someone in his 70s hes as sharp as a tack, I hope im this switched on at his age! the knowledge he knows, not just about faith but the world, animals, nature and the universe in general amazes me, he could talk for hours on end about so much, I love our meetings together, His house is next to the church and I help him in the garden some days too, theres some like moving heavy things around he stuggles with a bit, After mass tonight he indroduced me to a couple of other guys my age that have been away for a while, they only live around the corner so now I can hang out with other people from the church, the father knows ive been a bit lonely in that area, and its good to speak to people my own age about things, I dont think I would have made it this far without the father, I love him, hes a true priest…
