I think that the churh is being too passive in defending it self from the fundamentalist. If saint Paul, Saint Augustine, and Saint Anthony were alive today, they would get a whip and repremand our officials for not defending the church or speack against injustice.Even saint francis went as far as confronting a Muslim Sultan about the true Faith. He placed himself in geopardy. Our Lord jesus and the apostles protested inside the sinagogues; because the truth of the God of Abraham does not hide from anyone.
I feel our church is bending to human respect.I am not saying we should be like the arrogant fundamentalist; but like saint paul, realistic and with assertivenes when and with authority; like a real Jew, son or daughter of God should be.
Our late John Paul; the II did that but the church is not following his steps. He said:" do not be afriad"
We follow the church; if the church does not energize us we wont, if they don’t incourage us we wont be incouraged, etc; I guess tha’s why there are few priests.
I feel that in its subconciense the church thinks history is already written and that’s why there is no insentive to strive for a better tomorrow. In the mean time we are being attacked by arrogant fundamentalist stealing our members with their own made stories and infussing them with lots of enthusiasm to preach their “new” man-made faith under the umbrella of american superiorism. They make new faiths as they make new stores, malls and shops.
Jesus protested in public against injustice and our priest don’t protest against anything in our churchus. Our church should be more public about injustice and be more realistic about solving social problems because people live realistic lives, not convent lives.Thank you!

wow, goop post man! I agree!! Although the priest at my former and soon to return parish is quite strict and awesome, like a Biblical preacher. 👍

I would suggest you read a bit more of the recent history of how dissent became the “way” of the American church. As someone who grew up during the '60’s when these dissenters were starting to get their agenda established, but unaware of this until relatively recently, I found this article in New Oxford Review enlightening.

You must be a subscriber to read the entire article. It’s only $10.00.

If you can’t afford that, another book (only $7.95), is Call to Action, or Call to Apostacy by Dr. Brian Clowes at www.hli.org. Do a search for the title if the following link doesn’t work for you.

Please do not take it to mean I am saying all clergy are dissidents. However, some are being influenced by those laity who are getting themselves positions as vocations directors, faith formation directors and even pastoral associates.

I think another influence is some priests and bishops are afraid of being “politically incorrect”. They are afraid of people leaving their congregation (or diocese) and taking their money with them. Speaking out about the evil of abortion, for example, or living together before marriage is not heard from the pulpit for fear of offending someone. Is that how Jesus & his apostles taught?? No! One doesn’t have to yell, or use a “fire & brimstone” approach to get points across.

One of the reasons Catholics are leaving the Church for other Christian communities (non-denominational or other), is they are getting the Truth taught to them there. Perhaps they are also getting more interesting Bible studies. Hopefully, they will return when they find out they are not getting the FULL Truth as can only be found in the Catholic Church.

But the tide is turning! Please keep the faith, and see where you can help in your parish. Note my signature. Don’t sit on your hands – and keep reading and learning at CA forums!

God bless,
Mimi

The full quote from Bishop Sheen is:

“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops, like bishops and your religious act like religious.”

In the year 1054, the eastern part of the church broke away.
Why?
Because Rome insisted on defining the order of procession,
within the trinity. Orthodoxy was aghast, at this trepass on
Godhead. The sheer arrogance involved.

500 years later, the Jesus of the gospels had become
unrecognizable, as re-presented by Rome - as grace was
viewed as a commodity:
-----> indulgences, sacramental system, economy of salvation…

What happened - that made it possible to challenge Rome, on all of this?
The printing press had been introduced, by Johann Gutenberg, about 75 years before Luther.

Luther wrote, and his words were soon printed, and widely
distributed.

Since that time, the introduction of modern communications
has made the whole world "Main Street.’ Catching a plane,
to Central America, to evangelize, is now the work of a moment.

I love evangelicals.
They read the word of God, and take what St. Paul wrote very seriously.

There is no mediator, between God and man, but Jesus.
The work of our salvation has already been accomplished by him.
The sacrifice of Jesus was once, for all. We are made free, in
him, if we will accept him as our savior.

The entire sacramental ‘system,’ the whole ‘economy’ of salvation,
taught by Rome, is simply rejected out of hand.

The evangelicals seem too busy spreading the word of God
to engage in debates about who’s ‘theology’ is ‘correct.’
They are more like the Christians of the very early church.
They are eager to spread the good news of the savior.

“Arrogance” means taking into one’s own hands an authority
that is not one’s by right.

The ‘right’ exists in sola scriptura. The Christian scriptures
are held as the word of God, and those words are the authority.

The Catholic Church goes right on presenting it’s point of view on
what the scriptures mean, and states that she is the sole
competent authority, in interpreting these scriptures.

Millions of Christians nod pleasantly, at this assertion, and keep
right on proclaiming Jesus as their personal savior.

To the evangelical, Jesus really* is* ‘good news.’

I do admire those evangelicals, who preach Jesus as savior. If their churches are growing by leaps and bounds, perhaps it’s because those who never heard Jesus spoken of - as ‘personal’ savior, see the peace and joy in the faces of those proclaiming him and his love. They want what they have. The peace of Christ.

I do not believe that Jesus was a God/man, nor do I hold that
any ‘savior’ was awaited - by the parent faith of Christianity.
[messiah, yes. savior, no]

Yet even I can see the joy, and the inner peace, characteristic of many evangelicals.
I’m sure that God loves them very much, while mistaken about His identity, as they are,
as are all Christians.

The God of Israel is Savior. Yet He has made use of even error,
in bringing forward monotheism, despite the error of thinking God
triune.
