I apologize if this is in the wrong section…

To me, it seems like I am always having to defend the Catholic Church. It really gets frustrating. I’m not sure how others feel, but here are some examples.

When Saddam Hussein was about to be executed, the Church said it was not right for him to be killed. The reaction I got from a coworker was, yeah, this coming from the same organization that killed people during the Inquisition, they have no room to talk.

The Church is just the last remaining part of the Roman empire.

Currently in the news, the 9 year old girl in Brazil (which I am sure everyone knows about). Everyone I have talked to says how ridiculous the Church is for condemning it.

Then today, this comes out:
news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090309/od_nm/us_washingmachine
Just more fodder for anti-Catholics to use to ridicule the church, even though from the article, it does seems like the Vatican said that, just a news paper associated with the Vatican through it in the list…

I try, a lot of times in vain, to defend the Church, but it just gets harder and harder each day. It seems everywhere I turn there is something negative about the Church being said.

I’m not necessarily asking for responses to the above, just venting…

Attacks on any church will continue until the churches themselves are gone. Otherwise, attacks on the Catholic Church will cease if the members of the Church will stop attacking beliefs, religions, and other churches. It’s only fair. 🤷 There has to be someone to start being the “bigger person.” :yup:

Yahoo will take anything and make it anti-Catholic. Don’t take its news articles seriously.

And don’t worry about haters. We must follow Jesus to Calvary and the Cross is our banner 🙂 Pray for the Church’s enemies

Go ahead and vent. We can take it! 😃

But did you remember to rejoice? “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely becuase of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” Matthew 5:11-12

We are always called to defend the Catholic Church. Being a member of the Knight’s of Columbus it has been stated in the official handbook for K of C that we are called to defend the faith

As an historian, I would actually agree that you could argue that the washing machine did more to liberate women than anything else in history. The invention of the washing machine saved the average women something like 20-30 hours of extra labor per WEEK, freeing them up for all sorts of other activities. Likewise, I would argue that the most important invention for ALL people in human history is “free time”. Once humans were able to farm and domesticate animals reliably, they were free to engage in more frivolous activities, resulting in the development of true high culture.

According to Jesus, Saddam was rightly executed for his crimes.

“He that lives by the sword, shall die by the sword.”

And yes, I do find it ironic that the Catholic Church doesn’t believe in the death penalty now given their history.

well there is always going to be enemies of God and his church until Christ returns to pass judgement.

I would say that’s incorrect. We can and should stop badmouthing other sects inappropriately, but we must also maintain our stance towards teaching others the correct way to God.

And attacks on the catholic church will never stop until Christ has come and smites satan.

Perhaps you should inform your friend that the catholic church never killed a single person in the inquisition. The local magistrates, lords, and princes didn’t want to give up the power of trial anyway, so they CERTAINLY didn’t give up the power of punishment. The job of the inquisitors was simply to determine guilt or innocence. At that point the guilty would be turned over to the local government which would then determine punishment. NOT the church. Further, there were strict improvements in the area of evidence and testimony required for guilt, which was a vast change from the way it used to be done: the local lord or magistrate could hear your crime and declare you guilty without trial or evidence. MOST of our modern justice system TODAY is built on the inquisition, so perhaps your coworker needs a bit of education into his own judicial branch of government.

just laugh at this one. It’s stupid anyway.

Quite correct, but everyone is missing a certain peice of the puzzle. The church does NOT condemn abortion in the case of life threatening pregnancy… but it DOES always condemn ACTIVE abortive procedures, vice PASSIVE procedures where death of the child is incurred, which ARE acceptable.

The thing that earned the mother and the doctors their excommunication in this case is the fact that they deliberately selected an active abortive procedure in order to terminate the children. If only news agencies and anti-catholic editorial writers would take five minutes to figure out what ACTUAL church policy is, this would be so much easier.

Actually, I thought that the statement was pretty true. Pills, abortions, and the like haven’t “freed” women at all, it’s made some of them slaves to all sorts of eternally damning sexual indiscretions.

Work outside the home is both a responsibility AND a freedom, but with that freedom comes obligation to be where you’re told, when you’re told, doing what you’re told, or you’re fired.

You could almost say that the electric appliances and gadgets in general have created more freedom for both men AND women than work, abortions, and pills combined. The problem is when you take ONE line out of an article and provide zero context. I’m sure you’re with me when I say I’m sick of agenda based news articles.

get used to it. Satan wants to take us down.

I get sick of it, too.
On Ash Wednesday, I went to church at lunchtime. Usually I go after work, but I couldn’t because of the kids.
So, here I am at work, with ashes on my forehead, and everyone and their brother has a snide remark. Seriously, I’m sitting at my desk, doing my work, and someone walks up and says ‘Here’s this report’ and I turn around and they’re like ‘You know what’s wrong with the Catholic church?’
Ugh.

Thanks. I guess I’m just having a bad day.

sounds like harassment to me. I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to disclose the fact that their statements are bordering upon discrimination, if not blatantly obvious. If you tell them that their remarks are crude, then you have done what was necessary to inform them that it was uncalled for. In the event that the harassment continued, then it would be appropriate/prudent to take the issue up with their supervisors. I’d bet a million dollars that your company has HR policies forbidding this practice.

I find it “ironic” that you do not know history.

First of all, you obviously don’t know the Church’s history. You should research the Truth, don’t jump on the Devil’s bandwagon of revisionist history.

While there have always been sinners in the pews and the pulpits of the Church, for example Peter, the first Pope, who denied Jesus 3 times, and many so-called prominent “Catholics” today who are pro-choice (pro-murder of innocent babies!), the Church has always taught that murder is wrong.

Those who died as a result of the Inquisitions ( a much smaller number than the Devil’s revisionists historians have proposed), were wrongly persecuted by misguided people, some in the Church, some in civil government using the Church’s name to cover their guilt, but not by Jesus and His Catholic Church.

Again, on the death penalty, the Catholic Church is 100% correct. The death penalty is wrong and should only be accepted in the extremely rare circumstances where the offender cannot be safely secured and may murder other innocent people. Read Her teachings in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2266-67).

It is much more difficult to live with your sins for a lifetime than to be given the easy way out and be put out of your misery by the death penalty. Hopefully the guilty find Jesus and ask for His Mercy, then they are free to be productive, even if sentenced to life in prison.

As for the pregnant 9 year old. Babies as young as 4 months old (the age of the baby aborted) have survived premature births. Why is the Church wrong in trying to save the baby, who is innocent and did not deserve to be murdered (PC=aborted)? They never said the mother should die, just that every means to save the baby should be tried without deliberately killing the baby, while protecting the mother’s life. Now that poor 9 year old has not only been raped by a despicable man, but she has had her own flesh and blood torn apart from inside of her body. Yet another horrible burden she has had forced upon her and will feel for the rest of her life, although due to no fault of her own.

Again, listen to the Truth of Jesus Christ as taught by His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Sounds like common sense to me!

“As they left the council, they rejoiced that they were considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.” Acts 5:41.

I know the attacks grow tiring, but REJOICE!

At least we are not murdered (yet) for our beliefs like Jesus was, and many of the early Christians were and the martyrs throughout history, some even today, are!!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Mark

Strictly speaking, even you don’t have it entirely correct. As I stated in an earlier post, the majority of inquisitions were actually GOOD things designed to root out violent heretics (such as the cathars who attempted to overthrow the french government and tried multiple times to murder the pope, the same who broke into people’s houses and forced them to commit suicide to cease the heretics from torturing their children).

In fact, as I stated already, our entire modern justice system is built on the founding precepts of the inquisitions: that criminals deserve a trial of some sort and that evidence has to be presented to an objective judge capable of discernment. Even recently judges in some nations still wear white wigs in imitation of the inquisitors.

The large exception to this was the spanish inquisition, but that was not even started by the church (local spanish government kicked that one off) so the point there is moot… especially since it was the pope who managed to bring an end to that bloody affair. It is the spanish inquisition that has generated so much animosity and misinformation about what REALLY occured during that time period.
