Defiant nuns and monks refuse to give up Kentucky land for gas pipeline

I wionder if the monks and sisters are developing their own solar & winds power possibilities.
 
Separation of Church of and State. The gas companies could map out a different route, but want the cheapest way to lay their pipes. To lay a pipeline they need a wide strip of land for miles and miles and it must be maintained. There goes the natural serenity and beauty of the land. I hope they keep up the good fight.
 
Correct, Transfer of right, title and interest is EASIEST for the OIL Co.

EASEMENT is not transfer of OWNERSHIP

Oil Co.'s have the capability to do it BOTH otherwise (and less intrusively) (As advertised in their request to drill in that big vacant Northern Alaskan Park).

Easy there. Take it down a notch. Get a cool drink and cool off or something. Do you realize what you are saying?

Seriously, take a deep breath. Freeing 4.5 million people in bondage is a good reason. Even firing on a federal military base is a good reason. But monks and a pipeline? Every monk I know are “Lovers of the place” and lovers of the land, but they would be the first to walk away from from the land to prevent bloodshed and killing.

And having been the subject of newspaper “Jouralism” for a short time, I can tell you that the media hypes things up. I doubt that the monks are “Defiant” and bet that the picture of the sister with a candle is a stock photograph chosen to give the appearance that they are holding a candlelight vigil or something.

A call for war is exactly what the newspaper wants, along with a bunch of angry people posting repsonses and clicking on the bathing suit advertisements.

Relax. Breathe. Everything is OK.

Right, they should have a picture of Sr. Mary “This is my Safety” Francis in her ghille-habit prone behind a Barrett .338 with a multiplied Night Vision Scope and a green designation laser. (I don’t know all their names but she probably would have a choice of spotters and they are tough to tell apart in face paint).

This would not be a case of Emminet Domain since it is a private and not govermental.

There needs to be balance, out of 3000 acres the amount for the pipeline would be small and the nuns are ignoring the greater benifit of the energy that would better the life for millions.
Leaks for such pipeline are rare and there is little environmental damage.
The convent would also benifit from the finances. If they don’t want the money, there are many other Catholic Social Ministries that could do a great deal of good with it.

You’d be surprised. Walmart, along with several other large chains, has managed it a number of times and it is, unfortunately, legal.

Do you know of any instances of eminent domain for pipelines? It’s not generally the way it’s done. What happens is a energy company maps out the route it’s wants and then negotiates with individual land overs a price for an easement. In my fathers case, there was a law firm that came in and offered to represent any owners who wanted professional help. Final compensation was way more than fair for the landowners, although initial offers from pipeline company were a little low.

It sounds to me the nuns and monks made a knew jerk reaction with very little info, very early in the process. I suspect the pipeline company will move forward with plans without detailed survey of that portion and still make a offer for the easement. Probably a high offer right off the bat if they really benefit from that route. We will see what the good sisters do then. Adjacent landowners are probably pretty happy, as the easement on a reroute might be a nice windfall. The sisters will see it happening anyway. They can get the windfall or their neighbors will, regardless the pipeline goes in. They might change their mind.

Just speculation based on an article with little info and based on a little anadoctal experience.

depends on the property protection laws of the state. It sounds in this case the company is trying to lease the land, if not, they would have already been served.

The pipeline would be buried. People hunt deer in Texas and trust me, there are more than a few pipelines in hunting country.

Well, if you want to take it up into illogical an empty rhetoric, then I guess you can take it up more notches, but this is a perfect example of Godwin’s law. The thing is, property (unlike Solyent Green) is **not **people. Comparing some Nazi rhetoric about defending others and applying it to real estate is not in keeping with Catholic teaching which recognizes that people have a unique dignity that can not be compared with any worldly possession.

It sounds like it may become a legal matter. “Defiant” is a strong word for what they are doing.
