But the word vicar simply stands for one who vicariously stands in for another person. A vicar is someone to whom a job is delegated. The three strands of biblical imagery—rock, steward, and shepherd—show in three different ways that Jesus intended Peter to exercise his ministry and authority here on earth—in other words, to act as his vicar.

"Nice try, praise, but the Pope simply represents our Lord Jesus until His return. Just as the Prime Minister Hezekiah stood in the place of the King of Israel until his return.

NOBODY tries to replace God. Do you honestly believe that Catholics look at the Pope as God? How dense do you think we are?!?"

I didn’t write this quote Pope Leo did.

““We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.”- Pope Leo in an Encyclical Letter, dated June 20, 1894.The Great Encyclical Letters of Leo XIII on page 304.”

This book is readily available and can be purchased for about $10 at amazon. God bless !
It’s not readily available, exactly, and the cheapest listed on Amazon is $19.00

But in fact all the encyclicals are available for free online. So why so coy about which encyclical this is from?

And in fact the Latin “locum tenens” (holding the place of) means what NotWorthy said it meant. It’s a term that refers to someone who carries out the duties of an office without being the permanent office-holder.

Uhm, the post you are referring to was posted over 7 years ago…highly doubt you are going to get a response…maybe you will…just pointing it out…

First off, not once did I say that I didn’t like the pope, did I? No. I dont know the pope, how would I know if I like him or not, much less YOU know whether i like him or not…?

Second, the pope may have a unique role in God’s plan, but then again, so do you, so do I, and so does some homeless man living in a box on the street. Just because he has an unique role in God’s plan doesn’t mean he should recieve praise for it, instead God should be the one getting the praise for using him. And true, to the Catholic beliefs the pope has a very “important” role, but every part of God’s plan is important.

Also, I’d love to know just exactly how the pope is appointed by God, when they actually hold an election, with the vote of a hundred and some odd number cardinals deciding the outcome. Especially since the cardinals are put in place by previous popes…? can you explain that to me?

God is going to use each individual uniquely, and amazingly. Every little bit counts. No man should be raised of higher power than another just because God’s will for his life is different.

Plus, if catholics don’t view the pope higher than others, or is not viewed to be more perfect, then why exactly when the pope visits a place, do the people fill the streets, screaming and cheering? As if he were some celebrity…
Do you see people in the streets on a daily bases screaming for you? I doubt it. The pope is a normal human being, just like the rest of us. There is no reason for the praising of the pope, or the confession of sins to a bishop, or priest either, for that matter.

On a side note, why in the world would someone believe that only a priest, bishop, or the pope can correctly interpret the Bible?!? Do catholics depend on those men to tell them what you need to know?
You have many misconceptions about the Catholic Church and ask many questions based on those misconceptions. I will address one. Scriptures is very near and dear to me. I have read the Bible cover to cover four times. I read the word of God every day.

Nowhere does the Catholic Church teach that only priests, bishops or Popes can correctly interpret the Bible. That is not Catholic belief. All people are called to read the word of God and to apply its teaching to our daily lives. ← that is Catholic belief.

The Church simply protects us against error should we come up with some sort of whacky interpretations, like the people who read the Bible and draw the conclusion that abortion is OK or that homosexual relationships are OK, or a whole host of other beliefs. The Church simply says, “No, wait a minute, that’s not right” and keeps us on the right track. The Church is our guardrail, keeps us from going off into a ditch.

Pope Francis recently said that every Catholic should carry one of those little pocket Bibles with them and read it whenever they have a free moment.

I don’t need a priest or the Pope to help me read and understand the Bible. The Bible has been a constant source of joy in my life. I have met Jesus on those pages for many years in the privacy of my own home, and God has taught me much through is sublime, written word. There have been times however, when I don’t understand something, and it is nice to have 2000 years of teaching to fall back on, great men like Augustine and Bernard and Aquinas, to keep me from making a major mistake.

What I have just explained is authentic, orthodox Catholic belief. Anyone who tells you otherwise simply doesn’t know what they are talking about. I hope what I have explained. it has helped you understand the Catholic Church a little better.

We’re not suppose to make an idol, or representation for ourselfs, and thats exactly what the Catholic religion claims the pope is
False.

It is time to listen to Jesus of Nazareth:
Did He give you His teaching, personally? No, only through His Church which gave you the Sacred Scriptures, without which you would have no idea of what Jesus said and taught.

And this is how He commanded we follow His Church – it’s in Her Scriptures:
Christ wrote nothing and used quotes from the OT, as He established His Church and explicitly made four promises to Peter alone:
“You are Peter and on this rock I will build My Church.” (Mt 16:18)
“The gates of hell will not prevail against it.”(Mt 16:18)
I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven.” ( Mt 16:19)
“Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven.” (Mt 16:19) [Later also to His Twelve]

**Sole authority: **
“Strengthen your brethren.” (Lk 22:32)
“Feed My sheep.”(Jn 21:17).

Why reject Christ again?

Christ Himself established the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation):
Jesus empathically gave us priests at the Last Supper and gave them the authority to forgive sins in His Name for He commanded: “As the father has sent Me, so I am sending you….For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.” (Jn 20: 21-23).
