Cardinal Ratzinger:
Opinions of the meaning of proportionate reasons have been provided, by other posters, from many of the clergy of the Church, but nothing from Pope Benedict himself.
When asked if ‘proportionate reasons’ were used to decide a nominee in the primaries, responses of ‘proportionate reasons’ are not needed in that instance’, or a response of ‘we’re at liberty to disagree with the Church on other issues.’ The latter response made me think, ‘if we’re at liberty to disagree with the Church on an issue, there is no declaration of an absolute right, which means either view could be right.’ In that case, if an opposing view can be right, why can’t it be a proportionate reason?
In some political discussions there are those who claim that there are no proportionate reasons, even when there is no definition of proportionate reasons by Pope Benedict who wrote the phrase above.“A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.”
