Wondering how we can define what a Crusade is and how we can distinguish between “official” and “unofficial” or even other types. The online Catholic Encyclopedia says, “The Crusades were expeditions undertaken, in fulfilment of a solemn vow, to deliver the Holy Places from Mohammedan tyranny.” It continues with quite a lot of history up to about the French Revolution. What about the Battle of Lepanto and Siege of Vienna?
I’m reading Warren Carroll’s book, The Last Crusade, Spain:1936, and it makes me think we can be flexible with a modern definition like, an armed conflict of Christians against an opponent that is explicitly hostile to Christianity. That would make WW2 a modern crusade.
