Could someone give a short definition for the Preternatural Gifts given by God and could you name all persons known to have been BORN without the stain of original sin and therefore probably endowed with these Preternatural Gifts ?

Here is the list.
  1. Immortality - You don’t die.
  2. Impassibility - Don’t feel pain or harm
  3. Freedom from concupiscence (sexual desire), ignorance, and sin.
  4. Lordship over the earth

  1. Jesus
  2. Mary

May I ask the reason for your inquiry?
Saints that fly and the like are outside my experience though I do not discount the real possibility - and occasional historical case. Things like 2nd sight and speaking in tongues happen. However in my mundane situation I’ve learned that excess attention to the fantastic (while still holy) undermines my ability to be open to the inspiring.

I think he is just talking about preternatural gifts. Are there claims of saints that could fly? That’s the first I’ve heard of that.

Tongues is a different kind of gift from God, but it’s not a preternatural gift. I’ve not read anything about 2nd sight.

Several, actually. St Joseph of Cupertino would get caught up so much that his… bishop? I believe, would chide him to ‘come down from there’.

Adam and Eve were the only ones with all of the preternatural gifts, even though Mary and the Lord were born without Original Sin. The lack of Original Sin does not imply the preternatural gifts (which are not proper to our nature).

Good point. So a response to the poster would be that nobody was “born” with “all” of the Preternatural gifts (Adam and Eve weren’t born). But Jesus and Mary were the only ones “born” with at least “some” if not “all” of the Preternatural gifts…

Forgive all of the quotes. . 👍

That seems to be a correct statement. I would also add though that since the original poster asks for all those “born” without the stain of original sin, we would need to include John the Baptist. (His Original Sin having been removed during the Visitation.)

Hold it! Are you saying John the Baptist was born without original sin?
Prove it!

Problem with this site is that there is no imprimatur , no nihil obstat. Soooo, people can act like authorities and do harm!

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

Now during the sixth month, the Annunciation had taken place, and, as Mary had heard from the angel the fact of her cousin’s conceiving, she went “with haste” to congratulate her. “And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant” — filled, like the mother, with the Holy Ghost — “leaped for joy in her womb”, as if to acknowledge the presence of his Lord. Then was accomplished the prophetic utterance of the angel that the child should “be filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother’s womb”. Now as the presence of any sin whatever is incompatible with the indwelling of the Holy Ghost in the soul, it follows that at this moment John was cleansed from the stain of original sin.

Not true. Check your theology." Without sin" does not mean just grievous sin. The Church has only defined, infallibly, only one Immaculate Conception-- Mary’ s!!!

See, this just shows that anyone can “interpret” scripture to its detrement. Give me a nihil obstat on your “interpretation”.

If you are referring to J_Peterson’s directly quoting the Catholic Encyclopedia, then you owe him an apology because he just quoted what is known to be a reliable Catholic source. Definitely it is not his private “interpretation” of scripture so “give me a nihil obstat” is out of context. He was just citing a well known Catholic Source. He should have put quotes.

You are correct, and I do apologize. I got hung up on “birth” vs. “conception” . Sorry.
