I’m almost afraid to admit this, but I often hear the term “Cradle Catholic” and sometimes I also hear “Closet Cathlolic” and I don’t know what they really mean. What is a “Cradle Catholic” or a “Closet Catholic”. Can anyone give me the official definition?

I don’t know what a closet Catholic means unless it refers to Catholics being persecuted and they have to go underground so to speak.

A cradle Catholic is simply a person who was born and brought up a Catholic as opposed to someone who converts to the Catholic faith.
 
I guess I’m what you might call a “cradle Catholic”–baptized at about the age of 2 weeks, went to Catholic grade school, learned the Baltimore Catechism, then went to a Catholic High school.

“Closet Catholic”–I’m not familiar with the term. Maybe it’s a Catholic who likes to separate his Catholicism from his public life, keeping his religion pretty much a secret. Just a guess.
 
Cafeteria Catholic may be the other one that you are referring to. It is the Catholic that picks and chooses what they will follow.

I wonder what this makes me. I was baptized in the catholic church as a baby. After my parents divorce, I was raised as an evangelical, which didn’t matter to my father who rejects catholicism anyway.

At 35, I was confirmed in the catholic church. Am I a cradle/convert catholic? Not that it matters, just an amusing thought.
 
Here’s my definitions:

A cradle Catholic refers to someone who was baptized as an infant and raised in the Catholic faith, in other words, a life-long Catholic.

A closet Catholic refers to someone who is yet unwilling to make his Catholic faith public, someone who practices his Catholic faith in secret.

A cafeteria Catholic refers to someone who claims to be Catholic but who ‘picks and chooses’ to follow only those teachings of the Catholic Church that he agrees with and ignores all the others, in other words, a heretic.

I’m a convert.
 
Perhaps a “closet Catholic” is someone who agrees with Catholic doctrine but won’t come into full communion with the Church because of their family and friends.

It’s probably a Catholic who hides his faith from public view.

By the way, does this mean it’s okay to say that SemperJase is reverted? 😛

So a revert is someone who was a Cradle Catholic, then converted to another religion, then went back to the Catholic faith?

I was baptized when I was 4.5 months old, what does that make me?

I think that makes me a Cradle Catholic. Never mind then. 😃

Yeah. Basically, if you were baptised when you were a baby.
