Degree in Canon Law

I am greatly interested in becoming a canon lawyer. I currently hold a BA in Communication and an MA in literature.

My difficulty is that I live in Japan. And I have five children. Does anyone know of anywhere (reputable!) that offers at least some of the classes through distance learning?

The question you should ask before this is:

If I go through the effort to obtain a degree in canon law, how would this training be put to use (unless you just want to learn for your own edification). The list of possible employers requiring that degree is quite limited (i.e., Catholic Dioceses). Do those employers hire non-clerical canon lawyers on any sort of widespread basis? Can you legitimately expect to garnish employment with your degree?

Oh, gracious! I know that employment with such a degree would be extremely limited! Actually, right now I am homeschooling the three big ones of my five. (The others are very small.) Once I obtained this degree–which would be greatly for my own edification, as well as aiding in my Dominican formation–I hope eventually to become a Defender of the Bond in some diocese. Even if I had to be a volunteer, I feel a burden to defend, actively defend, the sanctity of marriage.
