Does anyone know a good cathlic college that offers courses online for a degree in theology?

I don’t know, but I would ask my Priest if I we’re interested. I’m sure he could help you,but be careful, he might “turn” you into a priest! Lol!!
Mary:thumbsup:

There are a number of Catholic colleges and universities that offer undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs in Catholic theology online. Check out the listing by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops:

usccb.org/laity/laysurvey/schools.shtml

One example is Loyola University in Chicago which offers a Masters degree In Pastoral Theology with all courses offered online. I’ve also taken an online graduate course in Catholic Social Teaching from Notre Dame University.

For the record, many men being trained to be permenant deacons receive a Master’s of Divinity through online programs. This is the basic theology degree for Catholic clergy. If your diocese has permanent deacons, you may ask them about it.

You might want to check out Holy Apostles College and Seminary. It’s a college in CT that has an excellent distance learning program that is actually very reasonably priced compared to some schools. Check out their website www.holyapostles.edu and look through their course offerings to see if this is something you’re interested in.

Catholic Distance University specializes in distance education, and offers accredited MA and BA degrees in theology, an Associate’s degree with a Catholic Studies concentration, and continuing education. CDU has never had bricks and mortar classrooms - distance education is all it does. Most of its courses are online, but CDU maintains some paper courses for prisoners.

Are you sure? I thought only priests get an MDiv?? Priests in the Archdiocese of Detroit get MDivs, Deacons MA in Pastoral Studies or an undergrad degree.

Dioceses in the U.S. establish their deacon formation requirements based on the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States (2009). It is important to work closely with your formation director if you are thinking that you are called to be a deacon and want to undertake a course of study that will not only prepare you as a person, but will also “count” toward the established formation requirements. If you do not work with your formation director, there is no guarantee that ANY program of study will actually be accepted as a credential for deacon formation purposes. Catholic Distance University offers courses that answer the requirements outlined in the National Directory, but consult with your formation director to see if they would actually fulfill your diocese’s requirements: cdu.edu/documents/academic/diaconate_training.html

I second Holy Apostles, because it’s my school and it’s no cakewalk. It’s also regionally accredited, which is the gold standard for secular accreditation, and it’s Cardinal Newman Society-approved, which means orthodox Roman Catholicism. It’s one of the most affordable programs as well.

Catholic Distance University has very good courses, and actually some other schools use CDU’s courses. The only issue with CDU is that they aren’t regionally accredited, which means one can’t pay for the courses with a Federal Student Loan. A degree from a non-regionally accredited school may also be an obstacle in pursuing a PhD at another school, particularly at a large, national level university.

Check what Franciscan University of Steubenville has to offer (I think at least part can be done from a distance …)
