Does the Western Church hold this has already occurred …or awaits the Second Coming of Christ ? What about Eastern Church viewpoint ?

The Catholic Church (East and West) holds that the saints experience the beatific vision immediately upon the removal of all attachment to sin. The Orthodox Church teaches that the saints only see the glorified body of Jesus and only after the resurrection.

 I’m confused and in need of clarification as to what you mean by the term"deification." Do you mean that the Saints will see God or become like Gods themselves? The Catholic Church teaches that in Heaven we will see God as He is-the Beatific Vision. The Catholic Church does NOT teach that we will become gods. Hope this helps. I’m sure I misunderstood you. 🙂

Yeah, I’m not sure either what was meant by the term deification. We will regain the likeness of God that we lost with Adam’s sin, if that is what is meant. Sorry, Adam, I’ll bet you hate hearing all of us constantly talking about how you were the cause of all the trouble. lol

The OP named Mary. To me, she is a special case. Queen of heaven, Queen over even the angels! Wow! She’s not God, but I do adore her, of course, not in the way I adore God. Imagine that God chooses to do everything regarding us through her, that he has given her unimaginable power in that all graces come through her (Mediatrix of All Graces).

No, the Catholic Church does not teach that we become God, in the sense of being one with the divine essence. However, the Church has a long history of using the terms deification, divinization, and theosis. Also, the Church does use the language of our becoming gods. Saints have used language like, “God became man that man might become god” (Saints Irenaeus and Athanasius, among others), and “We become by grace what God is by nature” (St. Maximos the Confessor). Basically, deification amounts to our being united to God through our union with Christ, which is brought about through receiving the sacraments and is nurtured by living a life of holiness and prayer.
