I started my 33-day Total Consecration late and didn’t say my prayer due to laziness. Should I continue the devotion?

Dear Michael,

Thanks for beginning the 33 day preparation for Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary. If you are following St. Louis De Montfort’s treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”, remember what St. Louis wrote:
Preparation and Consecration
Those who desire to take up this special devotion, …, should spend at least twelve days in emptying themselves of the spirit of the world, which is opposed to the spirit of Jesus, as I have recommended in the first part of this preparation for the reign of Jesus Christ…
Some books may suggest certain prayers at the beginning, but St. Louis asks us to spend at least 12 days in emptying themselves of the spirit of the world. If your intention from the beginning was to give yourself totally than it seems to me you have recognized your need for prayer and that is good. Keep going as you began and if you do not have a copy of True Devotion, you may want to read from the online version which I’ve linked above at the title. Paragraphs are numbered and the preparation begins with paragraph 227, quoted above. After the first 12 days there are three weeks in seeking knowledge of self, knowledge of Mary and knowledge of Jesus. During those 3 weeks, there are prayers which St. Louis asks us to pray and he too makes suggestions we may add but he is specific in stating you “may” for some practices which he considers good but not essential.

Blessings today – May 1, Feast of St. Joseph the Worker and the beginning of Mary’s month of May. 🙂

Simply pick up where you left off and keep moving.

The 33 day consecration is not commanded by Jesus or the Church–you’re free to do this or not, and there’s no sin if you don’t.
Furthermore, it’s not a magical spell that must be done the way the book says in order for you to achieve…something.
It’s merely a path to drawing closer to Mother Mary, who we are already connected to by the Communion of saints.

Peace

When people undertake a commitment to grow closer to God, the evil one will tempt the person to give up the commitment. Don’t let him win.

33 days is great, but remember that it is not a requirement. It is good to give some preparation to a major spiritual event, of course, but you can also dedicate yourself to Our Lady at any time and any moment.
