Deleting my Facebook

Ok then, I’ll articulate my point a bit more clearly.

PROVE to me, through logic and reasoning, that:
  1. Social interactions online are somehow inferior to other social interactions
  2. Social interactions on Facebook are somehow inferior to social interactions on www.Catholic.com
I have been wondering about that too. I spend a lot more time here than I do on Facebook. Someone who claims that Facebook is bad doesn’t take into account that this forum too is a social media in a way.

  6. Technology use is somehow harmful
Oh and I would like a graded scale on social interactions and an explanation of why you graded them that way. Please grade things such as Message Boards, Email, Facebook, Telephone, Letter Writing, Face to Face… and any other interactions you feel are appropriate.

When this sort of argument is presented to me, I’ll make an effort to give a proper response in return. It’s hard when the argument is “facebook is a waste of time so lets get rid of it”. Note the complete lack of evidence supporting the “waste of time” statement. And I won’t even get into all the veiled suggestions in this thread against people who use Facebook regularly…
Facebook in and of itself is not an evil, and neither is anything such as email, telephone, letter writing, etc. However, it is (or should be?) common knowledge that physical interaction is the natural and obviously unparalleled way to develop relationships. Our body language/nonverbal communication makes up for a huge percentage of our communication. Verbal communication plays a big role as well, but by itself it can’t substitute for all communication. All of the above is fairly obvious.

Facebook, texting, and other forms of internet communication are absolutely a downgrade from physical communication. Even phone calls (in which you can hear their tone, their way of expressing themselves), and letters (in which you see their personal handwriting, style, etc) are a downgrade. They can help you communicate verbally with others, but bear in mind that one can not fully rely on these to maintain a healthy relationship. They can help, but not replace.

I don’t mean to say that they are an evil and must be avoided at all costs; I mean that they can not and never will replace the most complete form of communication: physical.
  1. Social interactions online are somehow inferior to other social interactions
(read above)
2) Social interactions on Facebook are somehow inferior to social interactions on www.Catholic.com

It depends. Facebook is not always as much about sharing knowledge as it is about making oneself known and creating a virtual identity (not everyone)
  1. Using the internet is morally or spiritually inferior to the state of being outside
No one said anything about it being morally or spiritually inferior to being outside. Physically, it is better for you to be outside. Computer screens are not good for your eyes, and being outside gives you fresh air and vitamin D (from the sun). Not to mention that outside is more beautiful. But it is by no means morally or spiritually ‘bad’.
  1. A state of having technology is inferior to a state of not having technology
It all depends, but as a general rule, people are becoming slaves to their technology. Those who don’t have technology are not as enslaved to it. Our family doesn’t watch TV (we don’t have the converter box) and we are perfectly fine without it. But your question all depends how often and for what purpose technology is used.
  1. The practice of using technology is inferior to practices not using technology
This question doesn’t make sense. Almost everything in our world is “technology”. Technology is not limited to TVs, cellphones, and electronics. We use the word for these things, but:

**technology (těk-nŏl’ə-jē) Pronunciation Key
The use of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems, especially in industry and commerce.

The specific methods, materials, and devices used to solve practical problems.
**
  1. Technology use is somehow harmful
Technology, according to the definition above, is the opposite of harmful. However, anything in excess can be abused and be made harmful.

If, for example, one texts so much that they are no longer comfortable calling or having a face to face convo, there is something wrong.

All of these answers are nothing more than simple logic. I hope this all answers your questions.

May the Lord bless you always with His peace 🙂

Look… my point is that there seems to be an unstated assumption on this thread that social media is somehow inferior or a waste of time. It’s hard for me to argue against such a nebulous zeitgeist without replying with the same sort of nebulous thinking. So I gave a simple response that was in proportion to other posts on this thread… and got hit with an accusation of using a strawman argument. I can’t help it if the other side of the debate isn’t presenting a proper argument… How can I p(name removed by moderator)oint my opponents if I’m forced to guess? It just ends up all scattershot and I look like a jerk.

So if you, or anybody else, has a problem with my statements in this thread I would appreciate it if you could give me a detailed argument to counterpoint…
Yeah, this thread did kind of go into a tangent several times and I know there were other people who started implying how all long-distance communication is inferior. I didn’t like it either so I mostly ignored it since it just serves to derail the thread and confuse people on the real topic here.

If there was any basic point I’d make it would probably be that even though facebook itself is only a tool, and can be used for good or bad, it seems like people in general have become conditioned to use it a lot more as an outlet to nurture their inner narcissist than anything else. I know not everyone, but in my experience, most of them.

My other opinion is that facebook doesn’t offer anything of any real use to the internet that it didn’t have before, save for how it made it quite a bit easier for people to get back in contact with others that they’d lost touch with… although in reality that’s only a very small fraction of all total facebook activity so it would be kind of disingenuous to claim that this is the role it fills in people’s lives. Sometimes being able to do this can be nice, but I just wish there was something that was dedicated to only that purpose without all the additional drama and shallow self-promotion that’s become part of the “package deal” if you want to stake a tent at all in the facebook world.

Okay what I ended up doing was just deleting my account, but the thing is facebook never deletes an account permanently so if I ever need to contact someone and have no other way to reach them I can just re-activate the account temporarily and delete it again when I’ve gotten what I need. With that in mind, I have no reason to “keep up with” facebook at all now! :extrahappy: Good riddance.
no, you actually CAN permanently delete your account, but it’s not easy to find the right page to do it. I thought I had the page bookmarked but now I can’t find the link. I’ll look around tomorrow and post it here.

Just to let others know that’s possible to really stop FB once and for all. They never have to delete anything from their servers however, if they don’t want to. I don’t know if that really wipes all your data out.

Also, I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned this yet… but one thing that really nails it is the recent South Park episode, “You Have 0 Friends”. It can even be watched online (legally!) for free at the creators’ website. The sad thing is that even though it’s supposed to be a satirical take on facebook, most of the stuff on there could easily pass as a real-life documentary on behavior of actual FB users. :o

Thanks, I’d be interested to hear about it when you find out more. 🙂

That episode, like so many others in the show’s history, is pure genius.
