God has officially delivered my body mind and soul from the desire of viewing porn, especially the filth on the internet, and acting with impurity. I am in tears of joy and my heart rejoices with great hope! After recently partaking in the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion, God has granted me the strength to turn away from this sin and embrace our Lord Jesus. This is a tremendous first step, for there is much more to be converted in issues of purity, but God has proven to me with the action of His Spirit, that all things are possible. My dear brothers and sisters… I stand now by His grace as living proof!

Amen!

Many prayers for God to continue to keep you in His grace and protect you from any temptation to return to your sins.

I don’t believe it. If you have an addiction to porn, it’ll be a lifelong struggle. There will be times when you feel invincible (like now) and other times you’ll be hanging on in desperation by a thread. Just like alcoholics aren’t cured, they remain recovering alcoholics their entire lives. I know a priest who still has the urge to drink after 30 years sobriety. When someone says they’re permanently “cured” from lust or whatever other vice, my b.s. alarm bell goes off. Just know it’ll be a tough lifelong battle and that’s ok. I just don’t want you to feel discouraged when the raging hormones come tugging again. The foundation of recovery is realizing you’re an addict and always will be. Saying you’re “delivered” is just another escapism from the true reality of your sinful condition.

This is not true at all. Addictions are fueled by routine and dependency. They start with routine which eventually, if unchecked, leads to chemical dependency. Chemical dependency then reinforces routine which in turn reinforces chemical dependency and so on. Breaking the cycle sufficiently with any addicition involves interrupting the routine to the extent that the chemical dependency is reduced and eventually eliminated. Some addictions reinforce routine so strongly they require outside force to break the routine, such as confinement. Porn is not one of them.

Deliverance from sin is entirely possible and not a figment of someone’s imagination. God still performs miracles, such as full deliverance from addiction.

There is a chemical dependency with porn addiction as the hormones that flood the brain become like a drug. An addiction to porn can be as strong as addiction to alcohol or drugs.

I agree with Mark Robert.’

However, don’t let this get you down.

Right now you’ve been given the grace of forgiveness and feel the joy it.

However, this will pass and you will be tested and in our culture, its not all that difficult to be fed the little images and innuendos, that lead to temptations of the flesh.

Great vigilance is require here.

The big thing now is to root yourself in prayer, and ask for the grace of understanding, on why pornography is so evil.

The reason to avoid the sin must become stronger than the desire.

Prayer is the exercise to strengthen the will. Grace from God will be the nutrition that gets you through this.

In all, if you fail, do not give up. Go to confession and trust in the mercy of Jesus Christ.

God Bless
Jim

Thanks be to God you are working with his grace. Know of my continued prayers for this release you are praising God for.

Exactly, the chemical dependency, in this case the body’s production of endorphins and hormones in response to the stimulus of porn (separate from natural hormones for drive) fuel and and help to solidify the routine and habit which stimulates additional production of bodily chemicals which stamps more fuel to habit, and on and on in a viscious cycle. It can nevertheless be broken through interuption of habit for sufficient length of time, as with any addition including alcohol, drugs, etc.

Praise God!

I also suffer from an addiction to pornography and women in general. I struggle daily with lust, and I cleave to the grace of God in order to overcome it.

I think the main thing is to avoid the occasions of sin. The Internet has been a great tool for learning, but I also feel that it has become a great occasion of sin for many people (including myself). I would never buy magazines or DVD’s but porn is just one click away on a PC.

I have found the daily recitation of the Rosary to be a great battle in the fight against impurity and sin in general.

Keep up the good fight!

I was also going to say this. It’s very true. It’s difficult, actually, but worth it…

yaaaaa. Your a big boy now. I used to look at porn too. I am still tempted. but not going to look at porn again. I still struggle with impurity. But yaaayy:thumbsup:

Thank you for your honest replies,

Humility is the key thing here, and I would completely agree that I could slip back into my old ways with this particular vice. That being said, I do believe that God has permitted the desire to subside (for now). Spiritual warfare isn’t easy and there are elements our finite minds cannot comprehend, for such is only in the infinite mind of God.

For what it’s worth, it takes approximately 8 weeks for old habits to die and new ones to form. So give yourself that time to overcome the addiction also realising that it’s very easy to digress.
Like an alcoholic or smoker you need to make sure that you refrain from looking at this material even only ONCE!!
I stopped smoking 23 years ago and only managed to abstain by never being tempted to have that one cigarette. It’s the same issue for alcoholics, drug addicts and other dependencies.
All the best.

All glory and praise to God for this victory. But I have to agree with some of the previous posts. It will be a life long struggle that will get easier as time progresses.

See, I too suffered from the same addition. I can attest 100% that it is truly an addition. It is truly evil as it changes the way you think and see women in society. It corrupts the soul.

I tried on my own for years (yes, years) to break the habit. The slightest slip always lead to a major fall back into the addiction. Finally, this year, I realized that I could not do it on my own. I needed God. So I’ve completely surrender myself to Jesus. I started going to confession every week. I had to establish a prayer regimen. I have not looked at any port (internet or otherwise) for over two months! However, I am tempted on a daily basis. My greatest weapon is Mary through the Hail Mary and the Rosary.

Thus, my words of advice as you walk down the same path as me is this:
  1. Thank God every day for his love, patience and forgiveness; and ask for his help.
  2. When you are tempted, do not be discouraged. The devil has lost a soul and he will fight to get it back.
  3. When you are tempted, pray to Mary until the temptation passes. I remember one time I was in a checkout line at a local grocery store. My wife was next to me on my left. On my right was a beautiful woman in a bikini bathing suit. I had to fight the urge to look at her. I had to fight indecent thoughts. A porn addict is always tempted to treat women as objects. I prayed to Mary like there was no tomorrow. (silently of course.) As I prayed, the temptation passed. In our society, temptation is everywhere, even in church. I have a story about this Sunday Mass too, but I will not go into it. Suffice it to say that I spent most of the Mass with my eyes fixed on the large Crucifix hanging above the alter.
  4. Go to confession as often as possible. There will be times when, despite the efforts and prayers, you will or may succumb to temptation. Do not be discouraged. Go to God through confession.
  5. [IMPORTANT] Avoid occasions that will tempt you! I.e. strip clubs, Hooters restaurants, etc. Avoid certain television programs and movies. (music videos). At least for now, while you’re in the early stages.
  6. Destroy your stash! Yes. Everything. If you are an addict, you know what I mean. The mere existence is a welcome mat to the devil and becomes temptation itself.
I pray that God will bless and keep you, that Mary will hold you close and be a shining example of women to you. I will keep you in mind when I pray the Rosary.

I know what you all mean by how immensely challenging it is to overcome this sin. Lately, it has been around every corner: looking at women in a less than dignified manner and going through the motions in my mind. My prayer life has struggled since I can remember, however, when I first became Catholic this was not so. I would pray the Rosary often and sense God’s presence. Now I feel dry and long deep in my soul for God, yet there is nothing. This is a dark night of sense, something I never wentt through in my Pentecostal/charismatic phase. This is a test and trial of my faith and it’s like walking through an endless desert. Please pray for me.

I forget the saint’s name, but the story goes that he looked at a prostitute with so much purity and dignity (i don’t think these are the best choice of words but to that nature) that she was converted at that moment. I wish I remembered his name. Anyway, I look to him as an example of how I want to look at all women especially those who are trapped in impurity because they have never seen the way God looks at us all.

I too had an addiction to pornography. It is something I struggled with since the earliest I could remember. The first occasion to this sin was discovering magazines in the bathroom cabinet. Even before the age of reason, somehow I felt inside that these magazines were ‘dirty’ but I wanted to divulge in them. Of course, my mother discovering that I had found these, had secretly discarded them. The next time I went searching for those pictures, they were missing. My long gone natural mother was the sanctifying one in the marriage with my father. Another stain in my memory was when my brother and I had accidentally stumbled upon a video of a women being inter-coursed. From my childhood eyes, I just questioned what it was I was looking at. We were looking for the cartoon movie which we never found. Before I continue with this long story up to the point in which I write this, I can really see how the devil, the flesh, and the world were all at work against me and without the grace which leads to the sacraments, I was powerless to the forces mentioned above yet I choose to do what was impure on my own accord.

In my youth when I was say 6 or 7, my brother once dressed in my mother’s dress as a hilarious stunt for me to view. I remember here, that I lusted after that which I now know is not according to God; more specifically cross dressing. I lived the life of shame in doing such abominations before God, yet I did not know him. At the age of 11 or 12, I had fallen into the sin of masturbation. Even after this sin had been revealed to me as a sin from a pentecostal church, I sinned in this manner for a long time. When I had discovered internet pornography, I dove deeply into viewing these things whenever I had felt the urge and even simply to consume time. Here, I tested the world’s doctrine of ‘sexual preference’. I feared homosexuals yet was repulsed with the idea of men laying with men. My chest would sink when I tried to view ‘gays’ If it had not been for the bible I had at the time with a picture book-marking a specific portion of Leviticus, I would have probably found no shame in such acts. Yet, it is by the natural law which assisted in my lusts for immoral women. Not that that is an excuse to be immoral.

As time passed, cross-dressing was left in the dust as according to Leviticus, a man shall not dress as a women does for it is an abomination before God. Here, God’s grace led me to clean waters: to abandon doing such things. Yet the devil tempts me still but I find no pleasure in doing those things for my eyes are set on eternity and not a brief moment of sin.

As I turned away from cross-dressing, I did not see anything wrong with viewing pornography. Masturbation was a struggle still. At the advent of joining the U.S. Air Force, I had made a commitment to God to abandon all sin and strive to live as clean and righteous as I could. I was 19 at that time. I managed to avoid all temptation by keeping myself busy with the tasks of military life. But eventually, in the weakness of my flesh, I chose to view once again pornographic images and masturbate. I have a laundry list of impurities which when I recall them, I see that I hated myself and was suicidal. To this moment in time, my sins are homicidal tendencies, suicidal tendencies, homosexual tendencies. I intend by God’s grace to become what He had willed for me from the foundation of the world instead of following the flesh the devil and the world which all lead to destruction.

I dared not enjoy viewing pornography or masturbation after I had been baptized catholic and had understood those were sinful behaviors. In fact, it was simply not enjoyable because these are a gravely disordered conduct. The puzzling thing about viewing pornography is that I dared not take my learning of sin into the real world. God wouldn’t allow me to enjoy pornography or masturbation. For those two things were derived from the desire to be with a woman but not to be permiscuious. So as to not be part of the culture of death which is involved in permiscuity.

But slowly, God drew me out of these sins, as my heart cried out to God to overcome these sins every time I would commit it. I took the road of escape which God provided for me when I was tempted. Now I have reached the state of being forgiving of sin, yet not licensing. This is my attitude unto other people. God has infinite mercy for us, but is not licensing us to sin.

I am able to escape pornography because I am convicted that viewing such images is wrong. Woe unto me if I go view them now. Yet God has called me unto something greater and I hope in that. I am able to escape masturbation because I am convicted that doing such a thing is wrong. Woe unto me if I go do that now. Yet again, God has something better in store for me. He has something better in store for all of us who desire better things.

I praise God for the single life. For a moment I was dreading the vocations of marriage or religious life, but I did not see being single as a vocation. I now see I am to be open to being called into a different vocation in the future, but steadfast in the condition I was first called. I just wanted to add this last part because I was wondering what God has shown you for the living of life until we are called home.

**Hey please don’t put doubt onto this persons mind. Congratulate them, uplift, if you can’t it is usually because you have not had the same healing.

Look at the saints were then not cured of much, were they not as we are, humans, sinners, was St Mary Magdalen cured and stayed this way, was not Paul a murderer and God changed him, Peter a lier, and Thomas a doubter.
Then why can our brother not be healed to?

Is our God not that strong that if He wishes he could not do this.
Look at St Therese who changed like that after God healed her, in a second.

God bless.**
