Demeaner for Receiving - Gestures

The earlier thread on demeaner for receiving the Eucharist has focused on clothing. I wondered if some would comment on gestures during reception. I see people who genuflect or bow from the waist prior to reception, I see others who make the sign of the cross before receiving and sometimes afterwards and sometimes not, and most people come up respectfully and make the sign of the cross after receiving.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal (Adapted for the United States):

1. The priest then takes the paten or ciborium and goes to the communicants, who, as a rule, approach in a procession.

The faithful are not permitted to take the consecrated bread or the sacred chalice by themselves and, still less, to hand them from one to another. The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of the United States is standing. Communicants should not be denied Holy Communion because they kneel. Rather, such instances should be addressed pastorally, by providing the faithful with proper catechesis on the reasons for this norm.

When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. The consecrated host may be received either on the tongue or in the hand, at the discretion of each communicant. When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before receiving the Precious Blood.

Remember you’re receiving The King. As you approach the priest, deacon or EMHC, bow in reverence to Him. It’s okay to bow while the person in front of you is still receiving. Don’t forget to proclaim “Amen.”
If you receive by the hand, do not “take” the Blessed Sacrament with your fingers. Form a “throne” or “altar” with your hands by placing your left hand over your right hand (like a cross). Focus on Jesus, not on the minister. Then consume the host.
If you receive the Precious Blood from the chalice, again bow before receiving, and again say “Amen” before accepting the chalice.
