Democrats announce 2nd bill aimed at reducing number of abortions, supported by U.S. Catholic bishops
Both bills were prompted by a legislative proposal known as the 95-10 Initiative announced last year by several Democratic members of Congress and the organization Democrats for Life of America. The proposal seeks to reduce abortions by 95 percent over a 10-year period through legislation encouraging adoption, funding pregnancy prevention, prenatal care and day care and prohibiting insurance practices that discriminate against pregnant women.
The bill includes 14 provisions that call for expanding coverage to pregnant women and unborn children through Medicaid and state-sponsored children’s insurance programs. It also seeks to remove pregnancy from health insurance companies’ “pre-existing condition” lists to enable pregnant women to more easily obtain health care coverage.
The proposal calls for adoption tax credits, grants for low-income college students who are parents, increased funding for domestic violence programs and free home visits by registered nurses for new mothers.

Just as a clarification, accordign to the linked article, only the second bill is supported by the bishops. The first bill calls for expanded access to contraception which the bishops won’t support.

Peace

Wonder how many folks will stay on Low Income Assitance with this plan???

True true! Related link
The bill has the support of the U.S. Catholic bishops, unlike the similar legislative proposal, Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act, announced Sept. 14 by Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio. The newest legislative proposal does not include expanded contraception access, a component of Ryan’s proposal which drew objections from the U.S. bishops’ pro-life spokeswoman.

Yes, only only the Davis bill has the backing of the bishops. Its nice to have an alternative to Ryan’s pro-contraception measure. Let’s hope that the Davis bill moves forward.

I’m all for anything that will help move things in a positive direction and address real issues of concern to real people.

this initiative is wonderful and progressive in another way to fight the evil of abortion.

Unfortunately, last year’s bill never made it out of committee. It was referred to the Subcommittee on Education Reform, in November 2006, where it met a quiet end.

This year, the bill (HR 3192) has been referred to the Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities. They have a lot on their plate. govtrack.us/congress/committee.xpd?id=HSED

We will have to pray for its success. There are 36 sponsors of the bill, but none of them are on the subcommittee.

Unfortunately this bill died. It was killed in September of this year when it was moved to the Sub-Committee and it has not been put forth for a reading or scheduled for any hearings. Its apparently completely dead. 😦

Interestingly the chairman of the committee, the man who killed this bill, is a liberal Catholic Democrat. He is a strong proponent of Embryonic Stem Cell Research (according to his own website).

This strikes me as a case of a proclaimed Catholic who supports abortion and killed a bill that the Bishops supported. Chairman Miller claims to be Catholic but, like many Democrats, does not seem to practice his faith or show faithful citizenship.

Maybe, but you gotta admit one of the planks of the Democrat party is supporting abortion.

We need to pray for them all. 👍

I do admit and do pray for them. I pray we will have a governement and a society that has a consistent ethic towards life from womb to tomb.

Sadly at the moment we do not.

Josephdavid,
What proof do you have that the president and the "majority " of
the republicans don’t practice their faith? The president is not
a Catholic and while there are a handful of “Catholic” republicans
who obviously don’t practice their faith in the matter of abortion.
(“I personally don’t believe in abortion, but I think women should
have a choice”.) they are not a majority.
These false arguments don’t take away from the fact that the
democrats have a “pro-choice” platform and that the few democrats who try to even propose pro-life measures are
quickly defeated in one way or another by their party.
(BTW, I am speaking of congressman and senators in both
parties in the above remarks, not the public)

Neither does our President and majority of Republicans.
Big difference between Representative Miller and President Bush.
  • Representative Miller CLAIMS to be a Roman Catholic, he favors abortion, embryonic stem cell research, etc.
  • President Bush is NOT a Roman Catholic but he is much closer to our position on abortion than many of the Catholic Democrats!!! In fact, it appears that President Bush follows his faith far better than many Catholic Democrats like Rep. Miller!
We cannot expect to hold NON-Catholics to the standards of the Faithful Citizenship letter from the USCCB.

If I had to support them every single day for the rest of their lives in order to get them to stop killing their children, I certainly would. Wouldn’t you??

Apparently if it is accurate to claim that “Democrats announce 2cd bill aimed at reducing number of abortions” it is equally accurate to observe that “Democrats reject 2cd bill aimed at reducing number of abortions.”

How may times have we tried the old “throw money at the problem” approach, in dozens of different situations? How often does it work?

I suppose it all depends on what you are trying to do.

If you want to feel good and look like you did something about the problem, it works pretty well.
If you want to actually fix the problem…not so well.

A fellow once told me the difference between a liberal and a conservative is this: you’re drowning a hundred feet off shore. A conservative will throw you a 50-foot rope and say, “Meet me half way.”

A liberal will throw you a 500-foot rope, then let go of his end while he runs off to help someone else.😉

This is an old thread that was resurrected but is no longer relevant since the bill is dead. Thread closed.
