I don’t know if this is an appropriate place for this (wasn’t sure which category) but I just experienced yet another what I am fairly certain was a demonic attack. I fell asleep in the room I have my prayer corner in with my icons and I also wear sacramentals at all times (brown scapular, St. Benedict medal). It began like always, sort of seeing the inside of the room but in a half dream state, room was dim even though the light was on. Then I felt it coming on. Ever since I returned to the Faith it happened to me twice. This marks the third time. I could not move and kept trying to say “Jesus have mercy on me” but was unable to move my mouth. Finally I was able to get it out, started to free myself and then heard whispering over my face, what sounded like multiple voices.

Now, all this comes at a time when I had begun to grow in my spiritual life. I just want to say that I am not boasting or bragging: Daily prayer, multiple times a day. And I started saying Lord’s Prayer and Ave Maria in Latin, and had started daily rosary. This was my second night. Has anyone else had experiences with this?? Is it generally a good sign?? I mean, the room is doused in lots of holy water almost every day, there are images of Christ and the Blessed Mother all around, images of saints, holy oil, etc. How is it they are still able? Is God trying to tell me something?

First off, I’m happy to see that you’ve come back home. Back in the Church is exactly where you need to be.

That being said:

I believe you when you say you’re under demonic attack. I know what it’s like because I’ve been there.

Are you regularly going to Confession and hearing Mass? Have you gone to Father with all of this?

What you’re going through right now is to be expected. The devil will assault you in the ways God allows him to because he doesn’t want you to practice the true Faith.

My suggestion is to go to Confession and hear Mass regularly and keep up with your prayer life.

Beyond that: It’s a matter of asking Jesus to gift you with His Sacred Heart. Do not be afraid and just love God and others.

Sounds like sleep paralysis as it occurs when you are falling asleep - hypnagogic or predormital form. Normally your brain causes your muscles to relax (atonia) and be still as you sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs when atonia occurs while you are awake. . Some people also hallucinate during an episode. They may see, hear or feel things that are not there. They may even think that another person is in the room with them.

Talk to your doctor about this happening, as it seems that you are describing a parasomnia problem.

Michael16,

Yes. I was at confession actually last Saturday. I usually go every weekend and I do not feel right unless I go at least once a week. So basically, it’s just the demons trying to intimidate me? God is allowing this, I know they don’t do anything he doesn’t allow, so obviously, there is a reason for this.

It was an all out demonic attack that led me back to my Catholic faith, and my wife, who had no faith background, into the Church. There were no sacramentals or religious images in our home the night of that first attack, we did not even own a Bible yet. We cleaned house the next day, everything considered unholy went to the trash can. That next morning we bought a Bible, and then as time went on we filled our home with Crucifixes, sacramentals, holy water, etc.

While there have been no attacks as lengthy or terrifying as the first attack, there have been moments where it made it’s (their) precense felt. The worst of those moments happened one night as my wife and I were discussing a nice writing I had wrote about Christ kicking Satan’s *** on the Crucifix. As with the original attack it was able to scramble my thoughts and mute me. It was like being out of space and time for a moment. I guess I had made it mad by what I had wrote.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that no matter how many prayers, sacramentals, and religious images you have, the demons can still harass you. They do not like anything holy but they have been around holy people and objects since the angels were created. Even as faithful and holy as some of the great Saints were, they still were harassed. It is very frightening to experience their evil presence, those who have not will never understand what we have been through.

Just keep being “you,” faithful to Christ, and stay focused on your faith. Spritual warfare is as real as St. Paul says. We know how much St. Peter was threatened by Satan as well. Stay strong, stay courageous, and fight a good fight. At least you are on the winning side!

May the peace of Christ be with you.

I just got done praying the Morning Prayer of the Little Office and I included you in my petitions for this morning.

You were at Confession last Saturday and you go once a week. Good.

As for your question: Yes, exactly. It’s the devil and his angels who are trying to intimidate you away from the true Faith.

God allows suffering and demonic attack as a way to shape and mold character, faith and love.

I love what DeSales said. We all will face demonic attack in our lives.

I’m inspired to invite you to consider the examples of Saint Antony of the Desert and Saint Padre Pio. Both men were physically, as well as spiritually; assaulted by demons. I suggest including prayers to them in your devotions.

I sincerely appreciate all your kind words of support. Thank you. Glory to God! Ave Christus Rex

And by the way, thank you kindly for keeping me in your prayers.

I had something very similar happen to me. I’ve read some private revelation where Jesus said he wanted the devil to make actual physical contact with people. He didnt say why, but there must be a reason.

Satan would even sometimes attack St. Padre Pio physically. He describes this in one letter he wrote to a priest confidant:

“These devils don’t stop striking me, even making me fall down from the bed. They even tear off my shirt to beat me! But now they do not frighten me anymore. Jesus loves me, He often lifts me and places me back on the bed.”

You seem to be experiencing sleep paralysis. Nothing demonic about it. See a sleep specialist (neurologist) for medical care.

I believe Satan and the demonic is real but there are certain times we should go to a doctor and ask it could certainly be sleep paralysis and the doctor could help with it but it could also be the demonic I’d say go to the doctor but to be safe you should stay vigilant because it could be the devil download the Auxilium Christorum app and pray it before you sleep

Sometimes demonic attacks need both spiritual and medical things to stop for example addiction is sometimes linked to the demonic however if someone is addicted to say drugs and want to change it you would need to go to a treatment center talk and talk to a doctor but prayer is also of use because while the treatment helps exclusively with your mind and body prayer helps your soul recover.

I agree with the people who say that this sounds like a sleep paralysis or other sleep disorder issue.

While I do believe that demonic attacks can happen, if you went to your diocesan exorcist and said, “I’m having demonic attacks”, the first thing he would want to do is rule out any medical or psychological cause. One should NEVER just assume a person is having demonic attacks and tell them a doctor won’t help. The vast majority of the time there is a physical or psychological cause. As Catholics, we don’t go around blaming everything on a demon.

See your doctor.

Edited to add, as Sean said, you can always continue to pray, but prayer should not be a substitute for a medical and/or psychological doctor visit.

Consider both demons and medical issues. Dont discount either. Demons do bother us but their ministrations pass quickly as if you stay calm and close to God they get bored and move on to easier prey, so to speak. Medical issues may remain. Ofcourse it can be both, hence not ruling out either. Go about treating the medical matter anyway as it often helps with the diabolical condition too. So see you doctor, pray the Psalms, regular mass and confession and don’t worry God has got this and you will be fine. God bless

If you go to the doctor, you could mention the symptoms of sleep paralysis without mentioning the demonic aspects, which it might be good to discuss with a really good priest. And you might read about St Padre Pho and ask for his intercession. Staying close to the sacraments is the most common advice I hear.

Having experienced both sleep paralysis and demonic harassment in the past (in middle school and high school respectively), the two are distinctly different (as I experienced them anyway). I generally don’t talk about this kind of thing because people tend to either not believe me, belittle the experience, or brush it off.

Sleep paralysis is where you cannot move. When it happened, I woke up before my body did. I didn’t experience any hallucinations or voices with it. It’s terrifying in its own right. I recall thinking I was going to be paralyzed for my entire life and I couldn’t even call my family for help.

The demonic harassment was 100% connected to dipping my toes into the occult. I had a lot of friends that were involved in that kind of thing. I visited a local pagan tea house and store with friends, let a guy read my tarot cards, and dealt with an extraordinarily hostile guy that absolutely did not like the fact that I was wearing a cross and dared to show up on one of their holy days. I did not grow up believing in the evil eye, but this guy was certainly going there with his glares at me the entire night. At one point, I knew I needed to leave that place and right at that moment, which I did.
The demonic presence in my room began after this experience.

It went on for about a month. I never got to sleep in the first place, I could absolutely move (no paralysis involved whatsoever), I just felt extreme fear and would curl myself into the fetal position. A black malevolent presence/cloud would take over my room. When I did manage to fall asleep, I had terrible demonic nightmares (which has never occurred before or since in my life). It all ended when I was able to convince myself to call on the name of the Lord. At the very moment I rebuked Satan and called on Jesus Christ, I saw two glowing blue figures of light (one with a sword) appear. I fell asleep with the most calming presence and never had anymore trouble of that particular nature.

I can’t tell you if what you experienced was demonic or not. I have no doubt whatsoever that I had such an experience, and it isn’t something I would wish on my worst enemy.

I’ve had a similar experience at a similar time in my life. Naturalistically I believe it was sleep paralysis however I also believe it was the super natural using natural means to harass or communicate with me.

Just an a tip too. The most sacred name of Jesus would break my sleep paralysis Everytime.

I once tried St Michael and nothing happened.

Temptation also means research. Do not be quick to judge on who is tempting/researching you. In the Psalms it is said God will clarify us like gold and silver through the flames.
So be patient and don’t read anything in it and continue to pray and ask God for enlightment.
Icons and holy water aren’t amoulettes against us being tempted because we are tempted because of our sins.
Maybe you need to confess something…
Be patient and don’t take movies as corner stone for your experience.
Maybe talk to a priest…? Have you?
