The obelisk at the center of St. Peter’s square is over 3000 years old and was originally Egyptian. It was taken from Egypt during the Roman conquest and erected in the Circus of Nero, the place where St. Peter was crucified upside down. Originally, it was standing just to the side of St. Peters because the Church was centered on his tomb, not his place of crucifixion. It was moved to the center of the square in the 1500s as the only remaining remnant of the site of his crucifixion. He also says the pillar that is erected at the center of St. Peter’s Square was placed there to symbolize Satan’s penis penetrating the church.
