**“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that is coming; and now it is already in the world.” (I John 4:1-3) **

Ive heard the above statement many times, but imo, it doesnt make sense, according to this, it should be fairly easy for anyone to discern what kind of spirit they are dealing with, as I have also heard demons can trick and fool you, but they cannot or will not give any grace or credit to God, so again, should be easy to discern what is good and what is not.

Second, if we are not supposed to have any involvement in this sort of thing to begin with, why should we be taught about ‘testing’ them?
Haydock Commentary

**Ver. 1. **
Try the spirits; i.e. every doctrine that you hear: for now are many false teachers, false doctors, and false prophets. (Witham)

— Try, &c. viz. by examining whether their teaching be agreeable to the rule of the Catholic faith and the doctrine of the Church. For, as he says, (ver. 6) “He that knoweth God, heareth us: (the pastors of the Church) …by this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” (Challoner)

— The Church only, not every private man, hath to prove and discern spirits.

**Ver. 2. **
By this is the Spirit of God known. He gives the new converts first this general mark, by which they might have good grounds to think that the teachers they met with in those days had a good spirit, were of God, if they confessed and acknowledged Jesus Christ to have come from heaven and to have been made flesh, or made man; i.e. to be truly God and truly man. But if (ver. 3) they met with teachers of such a spirit as dissolveth Jesus,[1] by denying him either to be the Messias or to be truly God, or to be a true man, they might conclude for certain that such men had not a true spirit, but were heretics, antichrists, and forerunners of the great antichrist. Such, even in St. John’s time, was Simon the magician, who, according to St. Epiphanius, (hær. xxi. p. 55. Ed Petav.) pretended among his countrymen, the Samaritans, that he himself was God the Father, and among the Jews that he was God the Son, and that Jesus suffered death in appearance only. His disciple also, Menander, said he was sent from heaven for the salvation of men. See St. Epiphanius, hær. xxii. p. 61. 3. Cerinthus, as also Carpocras, held that Jesus was a mere man, born of Joseph and Mary, and also different from Christ. See St. Epiphanius, hær. xxxvii. and xxix. p. 102. and 110. 4. Ebion held much the same. See the same St. Epiphanius, hær. xxx. p. 142. These heretics and divers of their followers divided Jesus, and destroyed the faith and mystery of the incarnation. (Witham)

— Every spirit which confesseth, &c. Not that the confession of this point of faith alone, is at all times and in all cases sufficient; but that with relation to that time, and for that part of the Christian doctrine, which was then particularly to be confessed, taught, and maintained against the heretics of those days, this was the most proper token by which the true teachers might be distinguished from the false. (Challoner)

**Ver. 3. **
That dissolveth Jesus, viz. either by denying his humanity or his divinity. (Challoner)

— This is antichrist;[2] i.e. such is the spirit of antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh, or is to come in the latter times.

— And he is now already in the world, not the chief and great antichrist, but his precursors, in whom he may be said to come. (Witham)

— And he is now already in the world. Not in his person, but in his spirit and in his precursors. (Challoner)

While giving my situation some thought, I had a flash of insight: could me holding on to these demons - talking to them all the time - be a form of ‘demonic obsession’; I remember reading about this problem somewhere, but I couldn’t find a link which explicitly describes it. Therefore, this leads me to ask: what is demonic obsession - and could I be suffering from it? (I am certainly obsessed with talking to them…) Any answer the forum can give would be helpful.

Jason.

I found this link on this forum:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=550622&highlight=demonic+obsession
  1. Diabolic obsession. Symptoms include sudden attacks, at times ongoing, of obsessive thoughts, sometimes even rationally absurd, but of such nature that the victim is unable to free himself. Therefore the obsessed person lives in a perpetual state of prostration, desperation, and attempts at suicide. Almost always obsession influences dreams. Some people will say that this is evidence of mental illness, requiring the services of a psychiatrist or a psychologist. The same could be said of all other forms of demonic phenomena. Some symptoms, however, are so inconsistent with known illnesses that they point with certainty to their evil origins. Only an expert and well-trained eye can identify the crucial differences."
It certainly does sound like my problem.

And then this:
Yes, I agree that it is a good idea to leave it to the experts. However, isn’t that really the problem, that there are no experts to handle it?
In Europe, for example, there are entire countries without one exorcist to help the population. (Italy is an exception.)
In America, I think there are something like maybe 30 exorcists in the entire country (and I may be overestimating). That would not be enough to handle one state, let alone all the states “from sea to shining sea.”
To further emphasize the problem, many priests and even bishops today do not believe in the devil, demonic obsession, oppression, possession, etc. In fact, most of them want nothing to do with it and want to send anyone who complains of such phenomenon packing to a shrink and to never come back.
Yet reports of such cases appear to be on the rise based on reports in the news.
So who is going to handle all of this?
And what really has me concerned is the sheer volume of people who are not educated about it.
For example, take a lay person suffering from such phenomenon who goes to a priest that does not believe in it, and there is no exorcist anywhere within a 200 mile radius. The priest may send them to a shrink, who will diagnose them, and then they spend years trying to get therapy.
Could that be what’s wrong with my priest?

Priests are not heavy into the devil. I’ve never heard a sermon on the devil or hell since Vatican II.

But in one of your posts you said the majic word OUIJI board. We have so many posts on that just look up a few and see what they say. But briefly it is about the occult. Priest exorcists have nothing good to say about that ouiji board. It is the crack in the door that lets the devil into your life, and they say to avoid it like the plague. It isn’t just a game, according to them, it is a way the devil then enters your life in a more active way.

So yes, you probably do need special help. I can say that Mary promised those who kept the green scapular on them protection from the devil. But this protection depends on one’s degree of faith in her promise. Get a dozen or so and have them blessed, then put them in various places thru out the house. And pray her prayer several times a day. Also get small pictures of the face of Jesus, holy cards would do, and put one in every room. The exorcists have said they the devil dosen’t like either of these pictures. For a while, sprinkle the rooms in your house with holy water once a week. Holy water is another item the devil doesn’t like. Invite the priest over to bless your house with the official prayer of the church.

And it would be obvious to say that the sacraments are a must.

You might strike up a prayer conversation with Mary Magdelene, who had seven devils cast out of her. Ask her help and just talk to her frequently. She will respond to you I know.

It is important that you keep hope in Jesus, for he always is good to us and hears a every good prayer.

Dear Jason,

I think it’s a mental issue. It started with your obsessive thoughts about the Cross’ children. Empathy is not demonic. Then, you started obsessing about the conditions of their souls and took the psychic’s words seriously about one’s mental ability, in your case, to communicate with the deceased.

When you went to consult with a psychiatrist, the doctor has certainly recognized a mental issue, or else he would not have prescribed Zyprexa. The priest may have also recognized that it was not demonic, that was why he said that it was all in your mind. Both the doctor and the priest are right. There is no Christine; it is all in your mind.

I am no doctor, but from your post, I think that your condition is getting worse. Things begin to consume you - food, work, among others… Please continue to see your psychiatrist.

Prayers for you.

The five pointed star has been used for the five wounds of Christ and in Catholic Churches. Is it the same thing as your tattoo?

i might look more into this thank you for posting about it
i would have never known about it

Thank you again

Hello, lately, I have been letting her talk through me - and she’s threatening to kill me or my family - maybe even possess me!!! I realize that I have to absolutely renounce her and let her go… Please pray for me.

Jason

Jason, please talk to a good priest preferably an exorcist, because he would know what to do. There’s a reason the Church is against such things.

Yeah, she’s threatening to kill my family by possessing me, and, if I tell you, she’ll kill me. I must go to a priest immeidately… Pray for me…

Jason

I will. While you are preparing to see a priest, do you have any blessed objects, holy water, St Benedict medal, etc? If so it can help to use them. Invoke the names of Jesus and Mary

And don’t listen to “her”! Just pray. Ignore the voice. Listening is already giving it power whatever it is.

I have water from Father Solanus Casey’s shrine, holy oil, and religious necklaces… I have been praying… A few weeks ago, I prayed the Hail Mary 500 times, and yesterday 200. I also pray to St. Michael all the time. I will keep praying, go to another priest, and see what happens…
