I have been reading the Gospel of Mark recently and have been struck by the amount of stories of demon possesion and unclean spirits.

How are we to interpret these stories? Is demon-possession in this Gospel literal or figurative? And has modern science made demon and “unclean spirits” obsolete?

I am not really interested in the study of Satan or fallen angels but after reading this Gospel one has to study them to some degree, right?

Always. You always take it literally.

If you don’t understand how it is literal, you pursue that understanding.

You will not immediately, at first understand fully, because to understand is to understand what goes on inside the souls, minds, and hearts of men and your own self.

An understand that denies the literal is an understanding that is in fact favored by and enabled by that which is literally, the devils. The fear of this can prevent people from desiring to understand the literal nature of these passages, for people do not wish to understand the influences on their lives.

They do not wish to confront either God, the angels, or the devils. For this means… a world of difference… to the inner and outer life of man.

🙂

As a person who has seen demons and exorcised them from places, I can tell you that they are real…

I’d have to say that these are the passages that scare me the most, and I’ve only heard one, in which Jesus rebukes a demon in the synagouge. The part that scares me the most is that the demons know who God is, yet reject him.

I’d have to say it causes me much anxiety sadly. It’s why I’ve started to pray more and more each day.

You need not fear the demons. Greater is He that is in YOU, than he that is in the world.
