Demons... Spirits... Ghost?

I really didn’t want to make this post, because I know I’ll sound crazy… But I live alone in a loft style building above businesses. I know everyone who works downstairs and the exact time they leave…
The businesses are secured with shutters and heavy duty pad locks, so break in is impossible and I can always hear when they are unlocked and opened.

But right now I keep hearing rumbling and things moving downstairs which has never happened at this time of night (2a.m.)… I sprinkled my floor with holy water and the noise stopped for a while… The parking security gate opened and no one came in. I’m a bit uneasy right now and unable to sleep because of it. I know for certain no one is down there… I’m laying in bed with my rosary, Benedict crucifix & bible… I guess I’m just a little scared and I don’t know what more to do…

Hi. If you are absolutely sure the noise is not caused by something normal then ring your parish priest and arrange a day with him that he can come and bless the property.
 
…actually, to be honest, if you haven’t had a supernatural experience before then it is unlikely. As Emily said, maybe the place was being robbed, or maybe someone got locked in after work accidentally, or intentionally even - they might not have wanted to go home! Could have been an animal got trapped in there. But I’d only ring a priest if you know with certainty that these things are not the case.
 
Why don’t you set up a camera, to make sure it is not something natural? Maybe if you capture something moving on its own, then you can call the priest.
 
Sometimes old buildings make rumbling noises because they are settling and especially if there is wood in the structure dampness expands the wood and then a dry spell of weather shrinks them and all of this activity makes noises that you don’t hear during the day because they are camouflaged with other busy noises and in the dead silence of night you can hear them. Also little animals can make a racket when they are out at night and when we start off on this road of worry and fear, our imagination can take over completely. There is of course a possibility that there are spirits around but the St. Michael Prayer and some Holy water with blessed Salt added should take care of this. Why do we always assume that it is EVIL spirits and not a good spirit like the Holy Spirit who will come when you ask him.

If you are being tempted yourself and under direct attack *then *praying to be rescued is good medicine wherever you are. But purposefully going into an environment in which something evil might be prowling around is not something to do - with holy water or anything else. Dab yourself with the holy water and ring a priest!

I was once hoovering in a room that belonged this guy’s mother who had just passed away, and the wire from the hoover was wrapped around a chair leg in an adjacent room. As I was hoovering the wire pulled the chair around and this poor guy who was in there just shrieked - he thought it was his mum. It was funny at first but sad afterwards when thinking about it. Things can happen that seem strange but there is often a logical explanation.
 
Hi Akiliane. I literally just joined a few moments ago due to being brought to your post while doing a Google search. Firstly, I in no way think that you sound crazy. What you described (and beyond!) has been occurring to myself and my family since I can remember. You wouldn’t believe the stories I have concerning ghosts, spirits, angels, demons…and those experiences are distinctly different. Ghosts are simply the soul of individuals who have died suddenly, with no warning…a car accident, a building collapse, war etc. They are confused, scared, sometimes angry/annoyed and feel that they have unfinished business here on earth. They are not accepting of their passing and are having difficulty moving on so may be attempting to get a humans attention…basically this is their way of asking for help. Ghosts really just need our prayers to go to Christ. I typically say a Rosary for the repose of their soul and their presence soon dissipates though there are many other prayers and devotions out there for the most needy souls.

Now spirits and angels I have always found to be a presence sent from Heaven to aid a human with a situation where he/she has prayed and needs divine help. If one prays to a certain Saint his/her spiritual presence and guidance may be felt just as when we ask for the Holy Spirit to come upon us and to work through and in us. Angels are just angels :angel1: coming to our aid when we often don’t know we are in need of it. I know my guardian angel has come to my rescue countless times, but I feel that I’ve been witness to angels presenting themselves in human form who are just there then not, simply arriving to have done God’s will.

But demons of course are just that, demonic and unfortunately they take on ANY form. They may look like a person, they may seem like a ghost, they may sound sweet and nice…but they are creations of the Father of Lies and hence do NOT have an ounce of goodness to them. You will KNOW when you are in the presence of this evil. You wouldn’t just be “a little scared” as you mentioned, but terrified immediately, the uneasy, scared feeling overtaking you where seeking to invoke Christ’s presence is an instantaneous response. If I ever feel I am in the presence of this sort of evil I tend to not allow outward signs for the devil to see this, but instead say internally a Hail Mary. If the feeling of evil does not go away, I know this is probably demonic. And that’s when as others have mentioned, I pray to Saint Michael the Archangel and pray to the Blessed Mother and yes, keep that Rosary about you. Have faith that you will be taken from that situation and that no one else has to experience it.

All that being said, what some said could be right. Maybe it was an animal or a person trying to break in. But if you might think there’s a ghost, pray for his/her soul, for his her family, and keep this individual in your prayers as his/her soul may need additional prayers if Purgatory is where this soul is headed. If if might be a spirit or angel pray and thank them for keeping you safe, and if you feel that it is truly evil then do as you did while asking for the presence of your own guardian angel, Saint Michael, the Blessed Virgin and Christ himself to ward off the diabolical presence that’s keeping you awake. Hi femmedefoi, just in response to your post here; I don’t think it is a good idea to be measuring up the difference between a demon or a ghost. It is my understanding, and everyone seems to have their own, that there is no such thing as a ghost because GHOSTS ARE evil spirits/demons. And Satan *is not *to be trifled with. We let God to do the saving. Evil spirits are the priest’s territory. Not even all priests can do exorcisms - that’s how serious this subject is. If your family has been experiencing ghostly encounters then you need to speak to a person of religious authority about it.

One other thing too, is that any activity outside God’s circle of love, can be seen as a way for Satan to divert your attention away from the Holy Cross. The more you start studying all the demons and the nasty things, the more Satan is winning, because attention is exactly what he wants! This is why, if you are tempted you pray, in God’s power to save, not your own, but anything more frightening and it advisable to see the priest about it.**
 
As other posters have already advised, you need to rule out whether there is a reasonable explanation for this incident. Praying that you find out what is going on…

You might consider going downstairs during business hours and letting the manager of that business know about the night sounds. If somebody broke in, he’d want to know when.

Could be caused by a lot of things.
  • Trucks idling in the neighborhood.(a lot of heavy deliveries are done at night)
  • Road work or subway or rail work being done at night in the area
  • Vibrations can travel a long way through the ground, don’t discount something occurring some distance away traveling through the piping.
  • Ventilation system having increased vibrations due to bearings wearing out etc.
  • Animals. Not just rats, but raccoons, feral dogs and cats etc.
  • Not a ‘break-in’, but perhaps an employee with a key entering the premises.
I would have called the police, but since this was several hours ago, I would mention it to the business owners- they can check their premises for anything out of order and call the police if they find anything.

That to me seems to be a complete contradiction. Indeed there are ghosts and indeed they are not demons. Ghosts are the souls of people and reflect the character of who that person was. Take Christ for example whose soul became the Holy Ghost…the Holy Spirit.

I was simply offering a distinction for the original poster to help her (?) to recognize then avoid any dealings with the devil. One point I do agree on is “Evil spirits are the priest’s territory.” In fact my family has shared and been aided by several priests who have helped those of us experiencing the various spiritual beings, good, bad, lost, who are amongst us everyday.

Just because I have faced pure evil in my life doesn’t mean that I’m “studying all the demons” or am helping satan to win…quite frankly I am very hurt that someone, that I don’t even know mind you, would suggest that I’m allowing Satan to win. You friardchips, know nothing about me and quite honestly I have no idea where from my posting you would have thought anything like that.

My experiences are from being in my thirties and having lived in nearly twenty-five homes in various states and countries on this planet which is strewn with people and spirits both demonic and divine. I KNOW it is only in God’s power to save, hence the usage of prayer I told the original poster to use in order for that to be done for both herself and the spiritual presence that may or may not have been present… I won’t dare assume that you have not had any spiritual experiences similar to those I have had (and I’m sure others on this site have too), but you need only to look to the Holy Bible and the lives of countless Saints to know that humans have been encountering spiritual beings such as angels, ghosts and demons four thousands of years of recorded human history. I will pray for you sir (friar?) that should you ever encounter a spiritual presence you have the wherewithal to know what you’re dealing with and how to move forth from that place and that you look to learn and understand who others are and why they may have a varying perspective than your own before you make implicative judgements about them.
