Hello Faith.
I dont claim to be an expert but im from st louis and we 've grown up hearing this story. My own mother was in the same ward (not at the same time) as this kid was, at Alexian Brothers Hospital. And yes, there are sources who say fr halloran wasnt convinced of true demonic possession.
Actually the account I have read says that the ward the child was in was empty at the time. He was the only resident on the whole hallway. This was by happenstance of a sort and after the manifestations began, the Brothers were thankful of this because he would’ve been very disturbing to other patients. He was also catechized by the Brothers when he was in lucid moments and they found him a very pleasant boy. The actual room were all of this occurred was sealed afterwards and left sealed until few decades has passed and it was found exactly as they left it when the boy was discharged. As for Father Halloran later “changing his story” and others stretching this to totally dismiss the possession as a distortion of the true nature of the boy’s distress, keep in mind that the actual Exorcist was not Father Halloran. He was only an assistant and was not present at the final liberation nor was he the only witness to all the manifestations that went on and on and on.

But if you prefer believing that demonic possession is primarily a mental illness and should be addressed that way, go right ahead. No one will say that you have to believe in demons. However, we as Catholics know they are real and active and hurt people every day and that we do need the Ministry of Exorcist among us even to this day. Until the final battle, the devil will always pursue the children of the Woman of Revelation and make war on them. It is a fact of our life.

One other thing I’d like to say about this whole subject. The beginning of this thread asked if there was an error in the Biblical accounts of things demonic and if those who practiced Exorcism, including Jesus, couldn’t tell the difference between an organic illness and actual demonic activity and that perhaps the accounts were in reality instances of undiagnosed epilepsy or mental illness. It was even stated that a “revised” edition of Scriptures said that St. Mary Magdalena, out of whom seven devils were exorcised by Jesus Himself, was in fact mentally ill not possessed. But if you read the accounts of exorcism you will notice one feature of the accounts that is very relevant to this current discussion: laypersons were those who brought these cases to Jesus and His disciples for resolution. They knew the difference between medical issues, emotional issues and demonic issues. And there were quite a few of them as witness to the distress of demonic possession. There were no shrinks, or doctors or facilities or tests or police reports or any other way to ascertain that the person was under the influence of the devil. People saw them, the possessed, and told others who brought Jesus to them for healing. And the practice didn’t include sending them to the Temple to be interviewed by the Pharisees and/or Sadducees prior to Jesus or the disciples actually casting out the demons. In fact, there were instances of one person’s word spoken to Jesus and witnessed by others regarding the demonic possession of a person not there and bingo! Jesus cast out the demon from a distance without ever even seeing the possessed person. This happened more than once.

It was the laity of that time, though that isn’t what we were called then, who could easily tell the difference between them and I think if you could talk to one today and tried to defend a position that totally dismissed all things demonic as medical conditions, etc., they would look at you like you are the one who is ignorant and blind and perhaps a little daft in the head for NOT believing. See what I mean? Also keep in mind that Jesus sent 72 disciples out by two to do the work of exorcism and they came back amazed that even devils were submissive to them. They were laypersons, not the priests of the Temple who had failed the people in this important Ministry at the time of Jesus. Jesus took pity on them and did the works that those in charge of the Temple couldn’t.

P.S. Sorry to hear about your mom Faith. I’ll pray for you both.

I’m going straight to the point , I need help with some incredibly strong dark force that is trying to destroy me! I’ve been physically attacked in my home two times now, loud growling sounds and large black formations like clouds of smoke moving really fast , I went to the nearest church and they basically laughed me out the door! Please anyone that can help :confused:
These things happen. You are probably not in immediate danger.

If you are Catholic, you should receive the sacraments frequently. Ask another priest or go to a different parish for help. Use sacramentals. Pray the rosary. By virtue of your baptism, you have the authority to invoke the power of the Holy Spirit and command the demons to depart. Bless your home with holy water while praying the Prayer Against Malefice and The St. Michael Prayer.

Ask others to pray for you. Fast. Trust in God. You have an opportunity to witness God’s power.

PM me.

If indeed you are sincere, Ask the Father God that if Jesus Christ is really your Savior, that you will give your life over t o Him, and seek to know Him. the proof will be in what happens. Use the Holy Name of Jesus and expell the Dark Force, command it to cease its activity and begone, then thank the Father for his love for you. Then seek a Catholic priest for counsel.

I’m not sure if I’m breaking Church teaching by praying this prayer which should be said by priest alone (I only found out now:)) Anyhow…this I pray when spiritually wounded and really weak An exorcism prayer:…catholic.org/prayers/prayer.php?p=682

you shoud see a priest though…but in any case…invoke St Michael. He will really help you and the prayer above…God be with you!

Thanks. She was there some 20+ years after this kid, and shes gone now.

Hello Faith.
Thanks for the links. They were interesting. Nice to know how others see things. However, I am a Catholic and I believe that there are demons, that they are just as real as they were in Jesus’ day, that their numbers haven’t increased or decreased since then, that they have supernatural powers and that the accounts of their exorcisms in the Bible are true and accurate accounts of how they were dealt with. I also believe it is possible for persons not in psychiatry, psychology or medicine to be able to tell the difference between a person who is mentally ill and one who is under the influence of the devil. I do not believe that this is the exclusive domain of psychiatry. I do not believe that the Bible was wrong or that St. Mary Magdalene was mentally ill. Let’s see. What else? I also believe that as a layperson my opinion about things demonic is just as valid as it was among those who witnessed demonic possession and oppression in Jesus’ day and that my observations are estimable and the Church doesn’t in any way dismiss my witness because I have no special degree or training in the matter. I also don’t believe that modern Catholicism needs to be rid of Exorcisms once and for all or that mental health workers and medications are a suitable substitute for those who are in need of the Ministries of a competent Exorcist. I also believe that folks need to validate and be supportive of those whose Ministry this is.

Though demonic possessions are said to be rare I do not doubt that they are on the rise during these evil times we are living in, that is, with occult activity definitely on the rise.

Thanks mtndweller I have tried burning sage, I even went and collected holy water and put it everywhere, I have used salt in all rooms of the house and from what I have seen today I am in big trouble, I had a friends father come round who is a plaster to bless my house and he was physically ill to the point where he could not stand! I do not consider myself religious and when I say prayers nothing happens, the atmosphere is so thick and intense.
The growling is more frequent and the place sticks like rotting flesh , I have packed a bag and vacated the house until further notice… I will be looking for a exorcist to deal with it because it is no match for the faint hearted!

Leaving the house usually does not end the problem, although it can. You may find that the manifestations change somewhat, but are not gone.

Sage, salt, and especially holy water can be helpful, but this is not like a pest problem and you have to put down poison. It’s not even like you need an exterminator (exorcist) to solve the problem. You have encountered these unusual circumstances for a reason.

This isn’t a story it’s happening to me now, prayers and stuff are doing nothing, it’s a extreamly dangerous situation to say the least, the only reason I’m on this site is because most people don’t believe it could happen.
I was thrown across my bathroom today and in a instant all of the light bulbs blew in the whole house, every time I speak out to it I’m attacked, I spoke earlier of a black cloud formation moving around(not always visible) but thisafternoon it appeared to follow me around, I only went back to the house to collect a few things, im not worried about it possessing me because my will is stronger than most!.
Are you telling me this is happening because of me? How could I have caused this, ? Any information would be helpfull, I don’t think scripture from the bible is much help to me due to the fact it makes the activity more extreme

And to say the least the growling is by far the most disturbing thing i have ever heard, it’s not like a animal growl it’s very hard to put a finger on it, I was going to try and record it but kinda pointless now since my friends have heard it first hand.

I have actually started having some really vivid scary day dreams which is not like me at all, I’m just wondering if it could get much more physical with me, I would kinda like to avoid that at all costs

All of the things you describe have happened to others before you. I know people don’t believe it. As Catholics, we were born for battle. The effectiveness of “prayers and stuff” is proportional to faith. Do you think a deity will come to your aid when you doubt his existence and aren’t willing to make an effort?

Do you have any trouble when you are out of the house? Do you have anything in the house that may have a demonic attachment? These things could include any odd religious or pagan artifact, even a book, or almost anything that you bought used.

Hello Barrier.

Obtain the help of your local parish Priest. He can make the correct referrals you will need to proceed. I wish I could give you a short quick answer, but these things take time to resolve. Start by writing down any and all phenomena that you’ve experienced calmly and make an appointment with your priest and take another person with you and read what you wrote. Obtain Holy Water and use it everywhere in your home regularly. Make use of the Sacraments, both Confession and the Eucharist on a regular basis. Obtain some relics and use them and venerate them in your home and ask for the Saints’ help and intercession and protection. Wear a Blessed Scapular. Pray your Rosary everyday and if there is a particular place in your home that seems worse, pray your Rosary there and direct your intention to deliverance and protection. If the Priest you see the first time is supportive, ask for Exorcised Oil and Exorcised Salt. These are slightly different then the regular stuff and are used for specific things. Only an authorized Priest can do an actual Exorcism but if you are engaged in spiritual combat and in the early stages, you most likely will not need this but you still have a battle ahead. Use all the weapons of the Church available to you. Let’s see. What else can you do? Wear a blessed medal either St. Benedict’s or a Miraculous one and don’t be afraid to ask to have them blessed at Church. Also and this is very key: eliminate all sins that you can think of and frequent the Sacrament of Confession. The devil hates Confession and it afflicts him to see his target at peace with God even if you don’t feel it. He will work against this most strong defense and will discourage you from seeking it out and will frequently attack shortly after or on the way to it. Fast if you can even for half a day with the intention of strengthening yourself for the fight. Remember, most of all this is Christ’s battle and He it is Who will be the Victor, no one else, not yourself or any other human being. That is important to keep in mind too. The devil will use any fault you have to try and gain entrance. And at the early stages he is seeking permission from you to enter. Do not give it. Do not engage in any talk or if you see things, ignore them and give absolutely no recognition to them. This gives them an advantage. Make the sign of the Cross each and every time you notice something and ask for it’s protection. One other thing. Do no discuss this with many folks. They can inadvertently help the devil by no real fault of their own. Stick to speaking with those who are supportive.

Oh well. I’ve said too much again. I sincerely hope your problem resolves itself rapidly and I will pray for you. I’m confident if you begin these things I’ve listed you will find relief. We are not helpless in the face of evil. Not by a long shot.

Hello Faith.
Yes the book is very good and Father Amorth wrote a sequel to it. Another helpful book that is short and accurate is Possession, Exorcism and Hauntings by Adam C. Blai, M.S. This last is a very recent publication, this year in fact. I recommend it too.

This Q& A article with Catholic exorcist Pedro Barrajon about demons is very interesting. Particularly interesting is his comments about the invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
Q; Why doesn’t he want to reveal his name?
***A; ***The name discloses his being. Franz Rosenzweig once said the name is not “sound and smoke”, as Goethe says, but “word and fire”. The name Jesus means “God saves”. Isaac, Jacob, all these names have a particular meaning. And it always discloses the person’s being. When I say my name, I’m also saying: I am here. No Demon ever wants to say its name.
***Q; ***And once it’s said it?
***A; ***At the end, the priest says to the demon, “Go away! Disappear!” The demon usually answers, “No, I don’t want to.” It rebels and revolts. Sometimes it says “You have no power over me. You are nothing to me.” But after a while, its resistance weakens. This usually happens after the invocation of the Holy Mother, she’s very important for that. No demon ever dares to insult her during an exorcism. Never.
***Q; ***Does he have more respect for Mary than for God himself?
***A; ******Apparently. Otherwise no holds are barred, and everyone is insulted: the priests, everyone present, the bishops, the Pope, even Jesus Christ. But never the Virgin Mary. It’s an enigma.
Peace, Mark

I thought demons HAD to obey anything told to them, as long as it is done using the name of Jesus Christ, or even the Virgin Mary? So, if someone instructs them to leave in the name of Jesus Christ, or Mary, how could they get around that and disobey?

You were mistaken.

When the Apostles couldn’t expel a spirit. Jesus said "Oh ye of little faith, and He also stated that this spirit could only be expelled by prayer and fasting. I speak of diabolical possession of a person. When a spirit inhabits a house I would believe that would be a different situation. Spirits have different strengths and require stronger measures. And it appears that is also depends on the exorcist. If his own life is not right, like those in scripture who were beaten by the devil when trying to expell them.then the spirits would not acknowledge him They acknowledged St.Paul, but not the others. Also you can use words like “Who is like God” and remind it or them that “they will be separated from God and burn forever and ever” Keep repeating these words The Church forbids diabolical exorcisms, but not simple. Many Catholics do not understand that with Baptism comes a sharing in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly ministry of Christ. This info is contained in the documents of Vatican ll. We have a divine heritage as adopted children of God. If we do not believe that, we are handicapped in priestly ministries. and others. As stated we Christians are endowed with the power of the Holy Spirit, believe strongly, but also be in good relationship with Christ
God respects the authority He gave the Church, so if we counter it we will fail in our attempts. Also realize what we can do. There was a case of house possession that even a Priest was not successful, and I believe that a married couple were successful. I think it was in the state of New York, maybe someone could supply further info.
