There are two petitions at a well-known website that aggregates Catholic news (I’m not sure if I’m allowed to name the site). I visit this site daily and was surprised to see such a discrepancy in the numbers who signed the petitions:
  • One petition demands that pro-abortion politicians be denied Communion (~13,000 have signed at this time)
  • The other petitions Fr. Jenkins of Notre Dame to “halt the travesty” of awarding President Obama an honorary doctorate of law. (~260,000 have signed)
**If **(big if) we assume that all respondents know about the existence of both petitions, do we assume that petition B has about 20 times the amount of support of petition A? If this is true, does this reflect a real-life trend in the opinions of Catholics? I strongly doubt this is the case.

There are Catholics who don’t want to restrict Communion to pro-abortion politicians, even though they consider the politicians’ views anathema. I realize that they exist. I get that. But I seriously doubt that so many people favor one petition and not the other. I’m going to assume that most people who signed petition B just aren’t aware of petition A.

My experience - I’ve been aware of Issue A for a long time, but not of any specific petition. When Issue B came about, I heard about the petition right away, because there was mention of it in association with the news article.

I signed petition B which I found through all the news coverage. I never knew there was a petition for communion denial. I’d sign that too.
