May I vent, crab, bend your ear for a bit??
This may get long…
Some of you know that my dear wife has been battling Alzheimer’s dementia for some time now. She is, in an advanced stage of the disease and is, for all intents and purposes, bed bound though I am able to move her from bed to chair - living room to bedroom etc.
Interestingly - over the last few weeks / months she has shown some improvement in eating, level of activity, trying to talk etc. She reaches for things, smiles more, even gives me hugs and just seems to display an awareness that I hadn’t seen in some time. Naturally I’ve encouraged these things (especially hugs
).
I even entertain the idea that these things might be part of God’s plan - could he be granting us a healing? Most likely not…but one never knows does one.
I just try to trust Him and move forward…
Anyway - A new issue has come up…Teeth. a few months ago her one bridge came loose and I got her to the dentist and he was able to remove it. Now it looks as though she is having problems (with pain) on the other side of her mouth and I’m thinking that I might need to take her in again…but here’s the rub.
If I do this it will need to be for a cleaning, an evaluation and possibly one or two fillings or extractions - I just don’t know…and this will require an IV sedation (something her dentist does regularly). There is just no other way.
The problem is that elderly and dementia patients often do not recover well from such sedation. So - I’m presented with something of a "catch-22’…
If I don’t take her to the dentist, we’ll likely need to use some antibiotics for gum infections and pain-killers while her teeth slowly rot…but maybe she has a few more good months (or dare I say, years?) of lucidity - depending of course on the strength of the pain killers…
If I do take her to the dentist, We can get some things under control (fixed) so that she is much more comfortable for her time left…but the anesthesia might destroy the potential for “good months” and leave her completely “out of it”…and even send her spiraling down to her earthly end.
I want so much to do what is best…
Then there is the matter of the expense. I HATE that this is a factor, but it is. Our resources are very limited and such a procedure is not cheap. That said - her comfort is more important than the cash - but I know she would not want me to be left “broke” when she is gone - we always had a good understanding of each other and of our financial situation…
I guess that I find it hard to prioritize…Maybe I’m not trusting God enough in this…I just don’t know.
I’m posting this to maybe get some feedback from others who can be a bit more objective than I can.
Please do not feel restricted in your replies for fear of insulting me or sounding insensitive. End of life issues sometimes require tough choices and plain talk is appreciated. So jump right in with comments - questions - ideas - experiences - insights - whatever…Who knows what might prove useful…
Oh and one other thing…It has really bugged me over the years that I have not been able to find any good “non-brushing” type solutions for teeth care in such a case. For a while years ago, I gave her sugarless gum to chew and that was very useful, but that is no longer an option.
There needs to be something that can be swabbed, or sprayed into the mouth - safe to swallow that maybe foams a bit to get in the “nooks and crannys” and can clean and is also a mild antiseptic…Maybe such a thing exists…but I’ve never found it - and I’ve looked and I’ve talked to people even a pharmacist formulator…Nothing has come up…
Anyway -
Thanks for reading this rather long vent. Posting it on Sunday of a Holiday weekend might not have been the best choice to get feedback, but oh well…
God Bless us all
Peace
James
