Denying Cuomo Communion

I really want to see this . . . man . . . denied communion.
It would be the most merciful thing any priest could do, to deny him Communion at this point. But in fact, what I wish and pray for is his conversion, a good confession on his part, and his coming back into communion with God’s Church on earth.

After reading about this guy, and given Joe Biden recently being denied communion, I’m wondering if it’s only a matter of time. Publicly living with his girlfriend after his divorce, staunchly pro-abortion views (to the point of telling pro-lifers to leave New York), and using Pope Frances quotes out of context to support these very anti Catholic views, I really want to see this . . . man . . . denied communion.

I really don’t understand people. Long ago when I was an atheist, I would tell others my views honestly and consistently. Now that I’m a Catholic I tell people I’m pro life and try to adhere to Her teachings on porn, birth control, masturbation, etc. Why are people so awfully inconsistent and hypocritical?! It’s absurd…
Most people are extroverted/romantics instead of introverted/rational. Cuomo probably lives and makes decisions mostly on intuition, which is the norm. His life isn’t internally or logically consistent but it probably just doesn’t bother him too much to do something about it.

I don’t understand people either but not everybody has the same personality. For people like Cuomo it is generally better to appeal to them through example and action and inspiration. The longer a person lives a certain lifestyle, the more ingrained they are and the harder it is to make them change their mind. Cuomo is also a public figure with followers, which adds social pressure on top of it all, so it would take something extraordinary to get him to change.

I think I’ve missed something here. My understanding is that Cuomo has not attempted to receive Communion in quite some time. How is the bishop/priest supposed to deny Communion to someone who is not actually requesting it?

Satan is very effective. He’s having great success.

It sounds to me like you’re coming from a protestant point of view; and while I respect it that’s where we won’t agree.

From everything I’ve read and studied the ‘Biblical point of view’ without the Church Christ founded doesn’t make sense, and just leads to error. The early Church didn’t have the ‘Biblical point of view’ because it didn’t have the Bible at first at all, and then didn’t have a cohesive Bible for a few centuries. The early Church had authority and tradition. But, I’m guessing you don’t see it that way; and have met or read something that made you doubt the veracity of the Church. I get it; I looked into that a great deal when I first got married and met my protestant in laws.

Either way, honestly, God Bless you, and please have a wonderful Christmas season.

Yes … way to many things to list . I do believe the Catholic Church has two things they must prove and that is apostolic succession and trans substantiation. Core foundation and beliefs that are the building blocks of the Catholic Church. I don’t believe these two things can be biblically justified. The only source anyone should ever go to is the Bible. I grew up in a Catholic family of 10 and not one time through all my schooling, all my teachings, and my families traditions or at home , did we ever ever open the Bible. How messed up is that ? Seriously, though, think about it . that is just not right and completely illogical. a scary thought to think you would follow Christs’ word and his teachings and never open the Bible with your children or ever discuss it. ???

OK, that’s my personal experience . Ha

Christ does not contradict himself. Pretty clear what he wants from us … it’s all right there in Scripture . Not super complicated.

Btw. I do like discussing it . I don’t mean harm or to offend. I just would love answers to certain things. Unfortunately what is written in Catholic doctrine, the actions and then what is defended - don’t match up.

The problem with this thread is that there are so many threads like this. There are endless threads asking, in effect, why don’t the bishops DO THEIR JOB. and very few jobs threads asking how Catholic laity can finally organize and stop these guys from getting elected.

I was formerly in the New York State Right To Life Party. It lost ballot spot due to lack of lay support. No threads about that, much better to slam bishops.

Technically,

The Republican party on life Republican Party on the Issues
The Democratic party on life Democratic Party on the Issues

when one has the choice of life and blessings but instead votes instead for a party that upholds instead, death and curses, they should be denied the Eucharist.

A very relevant point. He may well have been privately warned (I’m generally uncomfortable with the idea of publicising forewarning of such denials and does the law require this) or he might just have taken the none-too-subtle hint. Either way, it does raise the question of what more is supposed to be done unless and until he attempts to receive which hasn’t happened since 2011. He can’t be excommunicated since he hasn’t actually procured an abortion - simply supporting and signing legislation is too far removed from any individual act (especially given the requirement for laws involving penalties to be strictly - as opposed to loosely - interpreted). That’s not to say though that he hasn’t violated Canon Law in other ways but as canonist Edwards Peters observes, Identifying adequately what law was supposed to have been violated by Cuomo and in such a way that nearly every other sinner would not be liable for violating it, is a difficult task.

I most seriously doubt there is a politician out there, Catholic (including cultural Catholics who haven’t darkened the door of a church in decades) who does not know where they stand with the Catholic Church in general and specifically on the issue of abortion.

As in none. Nade. Zero.

As to Cuomo, if the bishop has met with him privately, he knows. That does not require a public excommunication. And word is, he doesn’t receive Communion.

So the point is… ?
