I had a great friend who passed away recently who made it a big scene to pray before meals in restaurants. I was never comfortable with it,
This to me is different. If you have a friend who is making a show of himself, and you don’t like it, then you can still say a little private prayer like you said you do (cross yourself, say a quiet grace etc. ). But it’s not a case of being embarrassed about practicing your faith. You’re embarrassed about your friend being a big show off.
Somebody in my mom’s family would say grace for so long at family get-togethers that the food would get cold, and the other members of the family learned to cut her off and just say some short grace so hungry people could eat.
The OP sounded more like he was embarrassed by the idea of praying in front of his friend, and I presumed a normal 1 minute long grace when I answered, not somebody going on for 15 minutes with gestures.
