This is where we have come to? Where supposedly catholic (small c intended) colleges are offering accredited courses in homosexuality! I called the “school” with the listed number (the “presidents” office and asked how could he as a Shepherd of the Lords children possibly decide to do this. Did he have no concern when he will, as we all will, stand in front of the Lord at our final judgement and try to answer for this. Mindboggling, and very very sad.

This is exactly why at schools such as Notre Dame we have to encourage and support our new President Father John Jenkins in his efforts to return Notre Dame to its rightful Catholic Character and leadership in Catholic institutions of higher learning.

DePaul Offers Minor in Homosexual Studies

Beginning this semester, DePaul University is offering a new minor, officially called “The LGBTQ [Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer] Studies Program at DePaul.” The program includes courses in English literature, comparative literature, American Studies, psychology and women and gender studies. Offerings vary from “Queer Studies” to the history of sexuality from the Puritans to the Victorian Era. It has not been indicated that all courses and materials will be entirely consistent with Catholic teaching. To protest: Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., President, 55 E. Jackson Blvd., 22nd Floor, Chicago, IL 60604; (312) 362-8890 dholtsch@depaul.edu.

Ya gotta be kiddin’! This is a hoax, right?

In answer to your question, Homosexuals are not an oppressed class, but a wealthy one and therefore have alot of clout.

We have black studies, womens studies, latino studies, native American studies. Homosexual studies? Why not. It’s probably worth as much as the others.

I think DePaul should be the first University to be looked at by the Vatican. DePaul should be stripped of their Catholic Identity for this.

Yes, I think the best thing would be to pretend that homosexuals don’t exist at all.

I actually think that might be a good idea for some folks.

Yes, a lot of folks would sleep better at night. If the whole gay thing would just go away.

On the other hand, folks would have to cope with other people using birth control. Gosh, that would mean talking to friends, family, non-Catholic, non-Christians, non-religious. It’s alot less fun taking on sex sins when you are outnumbered. It’s scary when you’re out numbered. It means you have to stick by yr faith, people you like may not like you, and golly, it’s not fair when it isn’t easy.

Bring back the homosexuals!

Well, you can kill two birds with one stone here becuase I am gay. Too bad for you that you’ll only be pretending though.

Tough subject folks, but remember:

I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you meant by that. Would you please elaborate?

Sure, I was being sarcastic. It seems as though some on this forum would rather pretend that homosexuals did not exist, rather than let one small college have one class addressing literature and history from a gay perspective. Just my opinion.

Uh, this isn’t one small class, it’s a minor degree offered in this subject. These kinds of studies, such as ‘Women’s studies’, all have decided philosophical agendas, everyone knows that. We weren’t born yesterday, you know. We know very well that ‘Gay studies’ will be totally from the ‘gay sex is not a sin’ POV, just like ‘Women’s studies’ is always from a strong feminist ideology. This is a well known fact.

Peace be with you!

But why do we need to have classes like that? At my school we have an entire sociology department that is basically a gay studies department. But we don’t have a single Irish history class. There are feminist studies classes but only one class on the Bible and it is “The Bible as Liturature”.

Why should homosexuals get an entire course dedicated to them? I’m not a homophobe so don’t bother calling me one…I just don’t see the need for classes like that.

Just as an offhand observation, homosexuals should thank their lucky stars that they live in this country, and not in a Muslim country.

If they did, they really would “just go away”.

And not in very pleasant ways, I might add.

Thats absolutely fine that you see no need in your life to have the experiance of taking a gay oriented class. However, are we to say that NO ONE esle should be afforded the right to study it if they so choose. You don’t like the class or minor, as it may be, fine! Don’t take the class and don’t make it your minor. But I think its a little crazy to say that no one should be able to take those classes. We have to keep in mind that there are a hundred differing points of view to each of our own.

Certainly not at so called Catholic colleges. The phenomenon of same-sex attraction is worth studying to flesh out the causes for this disorder and to help the people who have the disorder either recover their true heterosexuality and/or to live chaste, holy lives. It’s not worth studying if it’s going help promote the lifestyle or somehow affirm it’s alledged normality.

DePaul isn’t Catholic, it’s Jesuit, so before you go calling Card. George, he doesn’t have any authority there.

I find these studies a waste of time, but then I took a minor in theology and that too was a waste of time. OK, I can read the Scriptures in Greek and Hebrew and debate some points of Talmudic law, but hasn’t been real helpful in my life or career.

Gay studies would probably include a class on literature by great Gay authors, how could anyone argue against that? There have been a lot of good ones. It would likely include a class about homosexuality in history, what ancient and modern laws have been enforced against it… Just like Women’s studies.

I fail to see why this is controversial. There are gay Catholics. And DePaul’s student body isn’t 100% Catholic either. If you’re looking for a Steubenville, don’t come to Chicago. You won’t find it.

It might have been better to create a department of sexuality studies, including everything from heterosexuality to celibacy. Hey, a course on the history of celibacy in Victorian England – perfect for an 8 am time slot.😃

First, STOP BASHING THE JESUITS!!!

Second, De Paul is not a Jesuit school, it’s Vincentian. Ever her of St. Vincent De Paul?

The Jesuit university Chicagoland should be proud to claim is Loyola University of Chicago.
