we cannot say that Holy Father Pope Francis is corrupt, just because there are corrupt priests and laity globally that have raped and abused children.
Also, we’ve survived some pretty corrupt popes before.

Take a look at Pope Alexander VI.

Yeah, if the laity could remove Popes at will, Pope Paul VI probably would have been toast after Humanae Vitae and we’d have ended up with a Pope who allowed birth control, divorce and remarriage, women priests and probably other stuff.
Not to mention the more distant past…Borgia Popes anyone?

It is not in our Popes that we have Truth and the promise of eternal salvation. It is in Christ’s declaration that we ARE His Church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.
:+1:God brings good out of evil. One possible good that may come of the scandal is that more people who don’t at all understand the role of the Pope, may hear this response and think about it.

@Vico already quoted this but:
Can. 1404 The First See is judged by no one.
This is explained in this article quite well:

However, if you are wondering how long Pope Francis might live—someone has done the maths on that:

The Atlantic is the opinion a pope could be deposed of via a council:

https://www.theatlantic.com/daily-dish/archive/2010/03/can-the-pope-be-removed-ctd/189142/
There is an authority in the Catholic church that possesses power at least equal to that of the pope: the Ecumenical Council. The decrees of an Ecumenical Council have a force like that of Papal dicta, and they constitute the canon law by which the Pope governs. The Councils write the laws. So the Pope is supreme within the law, but the Council is supreme over the law. As a result, a Council can remove a pope. In fact, it’s happened several times.

The Atlantic vs canon law. Who will win that one?

For me, any talk of deposing the Pope is outrageous. That’s our holy father.

Yeah but seems this is more of an impeachment situation and I won’t support that

I don’t think the two should be equated as examples of “politicking”.
I agree they are totally different. I was only addressing the current topic. The appointment of bishops and priests is not something I have given any thought to, or have an opinion on.

Surely there must be a way to hold our ‘leaders’ accountable. Even the Catechism calls for that. We are saved through Jesus and good works in response to grace, not just accepting anyone in authority

What is all this calling for a pope to step down? The gates of Hell may not prevail against the Church but members may throw so much mud at each other that nobody can find it under the filth.

THERE IS A WAY in Canon Law and it will be followed; rather then fret and be involved in “what if’s” HOW about doing a great deal of praying {as I AM} for the cleaning crew which God is assembling.
