I get very depressed as the sun starts going down especially now that it’s winter. I tend to work a lot to keep myself from being depressed and when I am home I’m too down to enjoy my husband’s company. I don’t know what to do 😦

You should see a doctor. Online forums are really not the place for such advice.

I’m not asking for a diagnosis. Maybe a prayer and comforting words.

I’m no doctor, but is sounds as if you have Seasonal Affective Disorder. A simple Google search will tell you more about it.

I would suggest going to see a doctor, and prayer. Don’t worry, you are far from the only person that is affected by this, and it is treatable. But, as has already been stressed: see a doctor ASAP! :hug1:

God Bless you.

Edit: And now I see that you weren’t looking for a diagnosis. That’s what I get for being a slow typist.

In that case, a prayer for you:

Good St. Dymphna, you placed all your hope in Christ’s promises, and sacrificed even your life in that hope. The Lord, God, rewarded your constancy by making your name known and loved over many centuries by the thousands whom you have aided in time of difficulty. Please assist us now in our present necessity, and intercede before God for our intentions. Obtain for us a firm hope like your own in God’s unfailing protection. Amen.

Yes I figured I have SAD and I am going to make an appointment soon. 🙂 thank you so much I appreciate your response.

Obtain an SAD lightbox and follow the instructions. The feelings of winter depression are down to the way the body metabolises vitamins and hormones released by being in sunlight. SAD lightboxes emit light at the right wavelengths to mimic sunlight and help your body get through the dark months.

BTW… a suggestion like this is a form of prayer. We care enough to not want you to suffer and if we know of a remedy we want you to know of it too 🙂

But prayers too, of course!

nomatter how cold it is get out in the sun. Also rearrange your house so that you can get a good 15-30 minutes of direct sunlight even if you’re jus sitting reading a book.

the human body needs atleast 5 minutes of direct sunlight a day to synthasize certian vitimans.

Develop an attitude of “its cold, so what” get out and ice skate, walk the neighborhood, borrow a neighbors dog and give it a walk. its only in modern times that we spend exorbinant amount of time indoors.

prayers your way

Yes, spend some time outdoors. I’d say keep yourself warm, well fed, see if artificial light makes you feel better than no light. In winter, I need my bulbs and my heater and my food or my mood is really bad. My mother has the same problem with missing the sun.

Fortunately, this kind of depression is quite treatable. Don’t take a forum for anything but earnest advice to get thee to a doctor.👍 (and outside.)

Hi… I used to live in the Pacific Northwest of the US. Which is THE capital of depression related to weather.

Moved to a more sunny place. 'Cause I too realized I just couldn’t hack the darkness and rain all the time.

Then I learn not only about SAD… But that people in the pacific northwest are generally SERIOUSLY lacking in Vitamin D. When I was finally tested, even after living some 7 years in the “sun”, I was withing 2 points of falling below normal.

And YOU can easily have a Dr. test you for that. If you have no D, you can expect to stay SAD for a really long time! And also fall victim to serious illness. Google this for more information

DO NOT self medicate. This may not be your problem… and D is Fat soluable… Just wanted to share my own experience… if you relate… See a DR! PRONTO!

Many prayers!

Drink more milk. Or try vitamin D supplements.
Lack of sunlight is known to cause depression.

it seems to be a common disorder (coming from Cleveland I surely sympathize), DD has the same feeling, doctor prescribed a light which she found at the drugstore or walmart that has bulbs that simulate real daylight, supposedly using it in the evening on these short days really helps. was not expensive, can’t hurt to try, and cheaper than meds, but it is no sin to take anti-depressants when we need them. If you are depressed to the point where it is really affecting your quality of life and marriage you do need to see a doctor.

Yes, spend some time outdoors.
I would have to agree with this. I have depression as well as anxiety and I find that spending time outdoors helps my moods. Bundle up and go for a walk with your husband, maybe go to a coffee shop, stop by a pond and feed some ducks, anything like that.

I experienced SAD-like symptoms for a few winters in a row (I don’t always). One thing that seemed to help just a little: My bedside lamp is a standing, adjustable-neck flourescent one with natural daylight bulbs. In the morning, for 10 minutes or so before I was ready to get up, I’d turn the lamp on my face with my eyes closed. Its probably not as effective as the special sun-lamps for SAD, but it got me up in the morning.

Also, drink plenty of water; it can be harder to tell if your body is dehydrated in winter, and just one or two extra glasses every day can make a big difference in your moods, perceptions and energy levels.

By the way, I spent a few years with depression (I’m calling it that - but I’m not a doctor). I barely remember them and I feel they were lost in a way, and I wish now that I’d considered getting professional help. So, if possible, do what everyone on this thread is advising, get help (and it sounds like you’re doing just that)! 🙂
