Lately my mood swings have been everywhere. Up and down and depression has been hitting rather hard lately. I even hate to go to church because I see all the families there and I have to go home alone it just kills me. It’s getting to be a bit much lately. It’s like God is just ignoring me. I’ve been diagnosed with depression before and tried meds, counciling and just about everything really but nothings is working lately. Keeping myself busy doesn’t seem to matter either. It just all hits me harder these days. I’m wondering if some of this has to do with the time of life. I can’t afford any doctors right now so that option is out. I can’t even afford to go for screenings.

It might have to do with getting less sunlight during the day, Seasonal affective disorder or something like that. Perhaps try purchasing one of those blue-light devices, or a nice, bright sunlamp, and sit under that for awhile. It’s supposed to help those who’s depression is connected to not having as many hours of sunlight during the winter. Look into it! Prayers for you in the mean time. :gopray2:

I hope that’s not medical advice… I apologize mods if it is, moods are funny things, sometimes medical, sometimes not. 🤷

Praying for you, invoking the intercession of Venerable John Henry Newman, who seems to have suffered from depression himself.

Try walking 30 mins-1 hour everyday between 12.00 and 2.00pm, ideally near natural scenery if you can. It can make a huge difference.

Our Blessed Mother pray for you, Our Lord keep you.

All I can do is keep you in my prayer and Masses. I’m sad things are so difficult and lonely. I ask Jesus to somehow give you His loving presence

im going through the same thing right now, and normally id chalk it up to the seasonal part of my manic depression and anxiety, but i think it has more to do with my grandmas recent death. i live with my parents, and have all the amenities of home, but i dont have any friends (since quitting drugs) i dont have a car, so i cant get out, and i cant find a decent guy to date that isnt all about slutting it up. its hard, i know, and im not going to say it will get easier, because in my case, at least, it will only get progressively worse, but you should maybe try writing. it doesnt matter what about, just make up stories, whether happy or sad, or draw, or paint, find some sort of outlet for the angry or sad feelings. hell, get some wood, grab an axe and get to chopping. you said you run, and thats great. dont stay inside and do nothing like i do (tho i have severe panic attacks, so thats why im homebound) just keep your head up. if you need to talk, shoot me a pm! just work through it man…

Don’t give up on meds. It took 5 tries before we found one that worked good for me. Sometimes it just takes time to discover something that will work for your body. In my case we discovered I was also bipolar which probably didn’t help matters, but now on meds for that and the depression, and life is good again. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Dear Iamme and the OP, my heart goes out to both of you. I too suffer/ed from depression/anxiety and panic attacks. It is a very difficult cross to bear even more so when the people around you can’t understand what you are going through. As for me, I used meds for a while just to take the edge off while I tried to figure out what was going on (luckily have been off them for a few years now). After trying many things and doing tons of research the most cliche of all things seems to be helping me. I totally changed my diet removing as much sugar and unnatural chemicals as possible (lost 50 pounds in the process 👍 ). I’m all about whole grains, lean meats/fish, fruit and supplements now. Also bought a treadmill and some weights and started working out a few times a week. The treadmill was especially good for the panic attacks as the cardio exercise would sometimes mimic the symptoms of an impending panic attack and it helped me learn to deal with it. As I started to regain control of my behavior (through self taught cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)) I was able to venture back out into the world slowly but surely. Now with continued CBT, diet, exercise and lots of prayer, my life is back to a point where I am in control. As hard as it is to understand one thing that I learned is that God is always in control. At my lowest points He always pointed me to the right book, supplement, person or website to help continue my healing. Now in retrospect I have a glimpse of what maybe was His plan for my suffering. I was heading in a very bad direction in my life, doing things that could have possibly destroyed my life and my family. I am now rededicated to the most important things, God, myself and my family. Good luck to you both and my prayers are with you.

Hi there,
I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties, I felt like I had to write. My prayers are with you. Depression makes everyday life so difficult. Even our Archbishop (Vancouver, Canada) resigned this month due to his battle with depression. Just a thought but are there any catholic groups (like catholic family services?) that provide screening, counselling etc. that could be more affordable? Take care.

im not sure if there is. im sure there are many support groups, but i doubt they can do anything to help the actual problem, which is a chemical imbalance in the brain. i dunno if im gonna get flack for this, but prayer doesnt help with that, medication and therapy does.

iamme,
Why would you get flack for this? If someone has cancer or a broken arm, we expect them to seek medical treatment. The same is with depression. I realize depression is a medical issue but if the OP can’t afford a doctor, what harm could it do to look at other options for help? Also, people pray for others even if they know they can’t cure them. Even if prayer can’t cure depression, I can pray that you & the OP have better days in the future or find treatment.
