You asked:
Since Jesus had no earthly father, how can He be descended from David and be the Messiah?
Jesus was a descendent of David according to the law.

Jesus was also a descendent of David according to the flesh.

Jesus is both.
Descendant of David by law.
Descendant of David by flesh too.

Jesus was a descendent of David according to the law. St. Joseph is the foster-father of Jesus (law).

Jesus was also a descendent of David according to the flesh. Jesus took His Sacred flesh from the Blessed Virgin Mary (flesh).

We know Jesus descended from David according to the flesh.

ROMANS 1:1b, 3b 1 Jesus Christ . . . who was descended from David **according to the flesh **. . .

Romans 1 is a Scriptural implication of the Blessed Virgin Mary being of the Tribe of Judah (a descendant of David).

St. Joseph is explicitly shown to be of the Tribe of David (Judah–Mary is a Jew or a “Jewish woman”) . .; . but Jesus didn’t take His flesh from St. Joseph (so Romans 1 seems to be asserting the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Davidic lineage too).

If Jesus “according to the flesh” is a descendent of David, and Jesus took His flesh from the Blessed Virgin Mary, you know the Blessed Virgin Mary was a descendant of David too.

**CCC 488 ** “God sent forth his Son”, but to prepare a body for him,125 he wanted the free co-operation of a creature. For this, from all eternity God chose for the mother of his Son a daughter of Israel, a young Jewish woman of Nazareth in Galilee, “a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary”:126

The Father of mercies willed that the Incarnation should be preceded by assent on the part of the predestined mother, so that just as a woman had a share in the coming of death, so also should a woman contribute to the coming of life.127

LUMEN GENTIUM Section 52a 52. Wishing in his supreme goodness and wisdom to effect the redemption of the world, “when the fullness of time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman . . . that we might receive the adoption of sons” (Gal. 4:4). “He for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnated by the Holy Spirit from the Virgin Mary.”[1] . . .

LUMEN GENTIUM Section 55b . . . . After a long period of waiting the times are fulfilled in her, the exalted Daughter of Sion and the new plan of salvation is established, when the Son of God has taken human nature from her, that he might in the mysteries of his flesh free man from sin.

COUNCIL OF EPHESUS (431 A.D.) . . . So he who existed and was begotten of the Father before all ages is also said to have been begotten according to the flesh of a woman, without the divine nature either beginning to exist in the holy virgin, or needing of itself a second begetting after that from his Father.

GENESIS 3:15a 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your seed and her seed;

GALATIANS 4:4a (DRV Catholic Bible) 4 But when the fulness of time was come, God sent his Son, made (Greek = ginomai) of a woman, . . . .

My wife was at a talk given by Fr. Mitch Pacwa on one occasion. She thought it interesting when Fr. Pacwa mused something to the effect of: “People often look like their mother or father. Since Jesus’ human nature came exclusively from the Blessed Virgin Mary, He must have looked a lot like Mary.”

That makes sense even on a natural level biologically utilizing as it were, the flesh of the Blessed Virgin Mary, although I want to be clear here that the incarnation is a supernatural event—by the power of the Holy Spirit and no mere natural biologic event!

When Fr. Pacwa stated this, he was just matter-of-factly reaffirming the Church’s teaching on all of this in a most practical way.

I hope this helps.

God bless.

I read something that said it’s not certain that Mary was descended from David or not.

No, it’s not, although it can be inferred. But given that Mary was also related to Elizabeth, it’s just as possible Mary may have been of the priestly family, not the royal one.

But in any case, Mary’s ancestry is irrelevant. Jesus is descended from David through Joseph, his father.

And since Joseph took Jesus in as his own, and was married to Mary, that qualifies Jesus to be from the house of David, right?

St. Thomas Aquinas on Jesus as being from the Tribe of Judah (in the lineage of King David) according to the flesh (not just according to the law) . . . .

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS So therefore we believe that Mary was also of the family of David: because we believe the Scriptures, which assert both that Christ was of the seed of David according to the flesh, and that Mary was His Mother, not by sexual intercourse but retaining her virginity." For as Jerome says on Matthew 1:18: “Joseph and Mary were of the same tribe: wherefore he was bound by law to marry her as she was his kinswoman. Hence it was that they were enrolled together at Bethlehem, as being descended from the same stock.” – St. Thomas Aquinas. Summa Theologica. Third Part Q. 31.
