Though lengthy – if you’re interested, please respond with your thoughts on this event. God Bless!
*(All of this happened in a condescended 10-15 second time frame but I’m just trying to describe it fully, and describe what I was thinking the entire time. It was still dark outside, dark in my room as night normally is, so when I describe what I saw, it was a mixture of my dream and being awake.). *

I’m fortunate as a sleeper that sleeps completely through to the end of the night – only waking up to my alarm clock. But last night probably around 5am I woke up feeling a little nervous (somewhat scared, but not the same kind of scared you might have if you just exited a nightmare). My nervousness was coming from a sudden anticipation of what was about to happen, as if I already knew it was coming. A sound deep, dense & compact started to approach me, and I felt I could see a dark wind barreling through the distance, funneling together, and swiftly snaking towards me – and this deep sound was intensifying as it grew closer. I didn’t fear it because I felt confident that I was safe because whatever evil it was, I knew I was protected through God. The deep sound and wind blew into me, blowing past me like I was a strong tree standing strong during a gust of wind. I remember smiling because it wasn’t as bad as I thought it could be – and I spoke aloud saying “That’s it? That’s nothing” and I gripped my pillow in excitement as if I just was a team member that had just won a game. I know my dialogue there is a little cocky, maybe not the same anyone else would have chosen but that’s just some insight to my competitive but confident self I have against evil. The minute I concluded those words… I realized it wasn’t over. Instead I felt I just provoked something much stronger, much more powerful that I had previously imagined. The same nervous anticipation grew within me again, as in the distance I saw a massive version of what I just experienced collecting together. Darker, deeper, a fright train like howl, it gathered its own energy, and was at least 5 times greater than the first…. Like a title wave, this dark wind raced towards me and hit me, filled my chest, blew out through my ears and nose & mouth with incredible velocity – I kept hoping it was over, but every additional second felt unbearable – my chest hurt, I didn’t feel I had enough strength to remain….and then it was completely over.

I clutched my pillow, feared turning on a light in my bedroom… and then as opposite as night and day, my fear disappeared. I remembered the close cross to my head, I remembered the picture of Jesus hanging on my wall, and I felt like I was just a baby, an infant being held.

As I lay in my bed, I realized that I had been awake the entire time and it was not a dream. The entire day today, I kept thinking about that unique occurrence of last night.

I called my parents this evening as we set up when we would meet prior to an interesting Mass we’re going to tomorrow – it’s the Diocesan Opening Centennial Mass. I’m not an expert, but there is something about indulgences & graces to be given at this Mass. My personal faith has risen from neutral limbo to an excited Catholic – and my mother’s stance on this dream was that it falls so close to an important Mass – and she felt it was an evil force frustrated that I’m growing in my faith. What I described to her, was very similar to a dream she had about 2-3 months earlier when her faith & Catholic believes were challenged by my then non-denominational girlfriend (a breakup based on differences in faith). She urged me to submit this to Catholic Answers and is interested in your responses as of course I am. It’s not a question I have, but more of an experience I wanted to share. If others have had similar experiences or want to comment on this – feel free!

I don’t know what to say about that…I’ve never heard anything like that before, certainly have never experienced it. Evil to me is much more insidious then that. Do you have holy water? I keep holy water in my bedroom; as well as other rooms in my house.

I was confused as to whether it was a dream or not as you mentioned it being a dream at the end of your post. But then in your description you said you were awake? Your explanation about the devil tempting you more because you are growing in your faith makes sense. I think I’ve heard Fr. Corapi talk about that. I’d be interested in what all the experts here have to say as well and hopefully someone can be of some help.

I have not had anything so dramatic but I can tell you 100% that since I have been getting closer to God and coming back to the faith (Within last 10 months) I have absolutely felt resistance.

Same with me. I haven’t had anything near as dramatic as you experienced, but one night after praying the Rosary in Latin, I felt a chilling presence in my room. Odd and eery noises began to follow. I thought some evil or satanic force was trying to come upon me, so I started praying the Ave Maria, and it stopped and I was able to sleep. Nothing like that has happened since.

However, I’m sure you already know this, but be careful about this experience. Don’t try to put Catholicism in a box and think of everything as a feeling or experience. Just a thought.

Hmmm…I really can’t comment on that except to relay my experiences with evil, but nobody wants to hear that. I guess this is just a good lesson to remember that we are all sinners and weak creatures to the forces that fight for our souls.

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder…a soul really must be worth a lot if there’s an unseen cosmic show-down constantly taking place for every single one…

St. Michael’s Prayer is good for these situations.

I would try to maintain humility as well. No need to push one’s luck.🙂

This reminds me of something that happened in 1973, I had come home after serving in the U. S. Army for three years and the last 16 months I was stationed in Bamberg, Germany. I took a nap and when I woke up I felt an evil presence with an oppressive force holding me down. I was like paralyzed and instinctively struggled to make the sign of the Cross and as soon I did it the evil presence disappeared, and I recommend to anyone who signs himself or herself to do it with trust and reverence. God bless everyone in Jesus through Mary with Joseph!

Wow, I’ve never experienced anything quite like what you’ve described. It sounds like something you might mention to your priest to see what he makes of it.

I would say that I’ve had only one experience that was remotely like yours and that was when I was a teenager. As most teenagers, I didn’t want to go to sleep so I sat up reading a book. I was, at one point, overwhelmed with fear that something definitely not benevolent was present. Whether this was my overactive teenage mind or not, remains to be seen (😉 ), but I did grab my rosary and start to try and pray even though I was not, sadly, in the habit of praying the rosary. The strange sensation did eventually depart.

Actually, this is more common than most Catholics realize. Its commonly discovered after moving into a recently vacated house.

Demons and other entities do exist. The Catholic Church has a long resume of successful experience in handling this sort of thing. Unfortunately, because of the need to keep our exorcism rites and exorcists protected from those same entities, most Catholics are unfamiliar with some of the Church’s supernatural services.

I am currently assisting a Jewish friend in a rental home with a similar problem. While I went straight to the diocese and have involved the diocesan exorcist, your parish priest is likely to be able to help you. It was while having a rosary blessed for my friend that I discovered how common this problem is. Interestingly, the entity will not enter the bedroom where my friend has tacked the rosary above his bed.

Always start with your parish priest.

Great advice from everyone. It’s not good news to have had an experience with something evil, but the good news is where the comfort came from (the holy items in my bedroom). Today is Sunday, and last night nothing happened. Other than Friday nights strange occurrence, it had never happened to be before either. If it does happen again I think I’ll go straight to a priest and request a blessing of my room/home. Again that’s for sharing your thoughts everyone!

This has happened to me in the past. I awoke one night to find a dark apparition standing in my room looking at me. I was unable to move or speak for some time. I tried to say a prayer but I was so afraid that I couldn’t speak; I managed to say the Ave Maria in my head but this didn’t work. After this I called on the name of Jesus and asked him to help me. Instantly, the episode ended and I was able to move and speak again. The incident was horrendous; I was totally paralysed and unable to utter a word because of fear and dread!

After a few experiences like the one above, I also hung a rosary on the mirror in my room. Nothing bad has happened since. I pray the St Michael prayer every night aswell.

To the OP: I wouldn’t worry about this. Jesus has already won the battle for us. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

For a long time, I wouldn’t tell strangers these stories from my life even when our conversations took this turn. But now it doesn’t bother me because I believe God allowed these things to happen in order to strengthen my belief in the supernatural. These experiences took away all of my doubt in the spiritual realm and helped to deepen my spirituality with regard to prayers etc. So, in a way these experiences that we all have are graces from God, in sofar as they deepen our faith.

Wow.
A few months before I was to be confirmed, after being quite lukewarm my whole life and an athiest druing/after highschool, this stuff happened to me alot. I am known to sleep like a long myself, but I began to have these semi-dreams during the night where I felt like I was under attack by something I couldn’t see, and in my dreams I would say a Hail Mary and the thing would go away.
On night decided to take my scapular off because it kept getting tangled in my hair during the night. I woke up because I could hear two voices discussing me. Then I heard one say “Shhh…shes listening…we’ll get her when she falls asleep.” You bet I grabbed that scapular and put it back on, right after a quick prayer.
Finally, three days after confirmation, I was sleeping, and in my sleep, I was overcome with the most horrible sense of dread I have ever felt in my life, followed by a feeling of falling into a deep endless pit. I actually said a prayer to St Michael in my sleep, and though I don’t know Latin, the prayer in my sleep was in Latin. Then I was fine. Things have been OK ever since.

jmoburg,
Before you attribute anything to evil, make sure you discern it or have a discerning Priest go over it with you completly. Things aren’t always what they seem. Keep it close to the chest until you know for sure what it was and what you are to do with it. A night compline and a St, Michael prayer may be helpful. Tim

Many years ago when I was in the depths of a sinful life, I woke up early one morning, when it was still dark, and was “immediately aware” that there was something else in the room with me. I quote “immediately aware” because I don’t remember precisely how I became aware of this evil presence. I do remember how horrified I was. I was paralyzed with fear. The thing flew around the room, and came to rest on my back. I was completely paralyzed and dumbstruck by the horror of it. Then it went away.

Same sort of thing happened to my sister, except the “evil” thing was trying to suffocate her. She pulled the covers over her head cause she got scared and “it” got on top of her, she couldn’t move and with the covers over her face she couldn’t breath either:bigyikes:. Not sure what it was…she just “knows” it was demonic:shrug:.

First of all this is a call to repentance. Second of all you have no need to be afraid and third of all even though you did come up against evil overtly rather than covertly (covertly being what men do to each other) you were upheld in faith, that is Jesus upheld you.

The fruits of this experience is a deepening in faith, a conversion within faith. (This is true also for your mother)

You are now experiencing the grace of God converting you in faith. This is what you should focus on now and not the experience.

Keep your feet firmly on the ground, go to the Sacraments especially Reconciliation and live your faith, that is make yourself a Living Prayer within the Gospel.Repent of the past and then drop it and forgive everything; every wrong ever done against you.

This is the work of the Hoy Spirit and you have experienced what you have to call you closer to God now that you know what the options are you are more confirmed in faith.

Pray a great deal and give everything to God thanking Him for everything. Without God’s Providence not a second of your life is safe, thank Him greatly for all He does for you here in this valley of tears and willingly embrace your cross.

Pray with your life from your heart.

In the Living Prayer of my life

jmoburg, welcome to the Church Militant! :extrahappy: You don’t get to see the smoke and hear the gunfire unless you’re being called to arms. I’ve had, and been told of by friends and family, many experiences like this. With joy, and encouragement, I congratulate you on your first taste of battle – you seem to be a worthy opponent. Here’s a thread on how to make the fight even more unfair:

I had a similar, if not same experience a couple of times myself, too (also with struggling to make the sign of the cross).

May be unrelated, but you should be an author. Great metaphors.

Satan and his devils can be obvious at times, but at others are rather creative and insidious, as someone else mentioned. In January, while standing there performing mundane tasks in my kitchen, Satan began to tempt my faith. (God had been showering me with graces, and drawing me very close to Him, and I know Satan hated what was happening to me.) This frightened me initially, until he made a fateful error. He blamed something on “female hormones,” and I nearly laughed! I stated interiorly, “Begone, Satan!” triumphantly, as he showed himself to be The Father of Lies. He then left me alone for quite a while, but I am not as cocky now, as he is more insidious. But I agree with those who are commenting that supernatural phenomena are not as rare as one would think; particularly when God is drawing you “deeper.” It drives Satan nuts! Please remember to pray for all the priests that you know, and pray for them regularly. Satan knows that if he can harm a priest, then he can harm many others through that priest.
