Description of an evil force I saw/felt last night

I know in times of great fear and anxiety I not only say the Rosary but I also hold the crucifix and beads in my hand as a security blanket at night. Just feeling the rosary gives me great comfort and consolation. In your circumstance I would have certainly grabbed my rosary as soon as possible and kept it with me as protection!

When I was in my late 20’s (I am 59 now) I had a dramatic conversion experience, by myself, in my own home. My whole being seemed to be uprooted and reoriented toward Christ. Prior to that I was a lukewarm, fairly non-practicing Catholic. It was then that the spiritual battle began for my soul.

I have never been a great sleeper and used to have occasional epidodes of “sleep paralysis”, where I could not move or speak, yet was awake and aware of my surroundings, but at times I could hear voices, etc. After my conversion, these episodes, although rare, became insidious. One time I felt the presence of evil and something was sitting on my chest and trying to strangle me. I called upon the name of Jesus and the presence left, and I became fully awake and able to move, but I was badly frightened.

Sleep paralysis is not uncommon, many people experience it, and it can be frightening. You cannot move, but you can hear voices, feel things, are aware of your surroundings, but cannot escape the situation. It usually occurs just before falling asleep or just before waking up. There is a medical explanation for it. I am not saying that anybody’s experiences described in this folder is sleep paralysis, but I think people need to be aware that it exists. I believe that the evil one can take advantage of our helplessness during sleep and frighten and terrify us, just as God can speak to us through our dreams, but I also think that as Catholics, we need to be discerning and rational about our experiences, just as the Church is when She investigates supernatural experiences.

Having said that, I admit that I have experienced the presence of the evil one while fully awake and functional, so I cannot discount anybody’s experiences. I am a nurse and have had more than a few encounters with people addicted to drugs, but one time I walked into a critically injured patient’s room and there was a person high on drugs visiting him, and when I looked into his eyes I could see the evil, real evil, staring back at me, and it shook me up. It was truly a presence that I did not care to confront, and something told me to withdraw myself from the situation as soon as possible, which I did. I have seen this “look” in people at other times also. Thank God that we have Jesus and the Holy Spirit to protect us.

Though lengthy – if you’re interested, please respond with your thoughts on this event. God Bless!
*(All of this happened in a condescended 10-15 second time frame but I’m just trying to describe it fully, and describe what I was thinking the entire time. It was still dark outside, dark in my room as night normally is, so when I describe what I saw, it was a mixture of my dream and being awake.). *

I’m fortunate as a sleeper that sleeps completely through to the end of the night – only waking up to my alarm clock. But last night probably around 5am I woke up feeling a little nervous (somewhat scared, but not the same kind of scared you might have if you just exited a nightmare). My nervousness was coming from a sudden anticipation of what was about to happen, as if I already knew it was coming. A sound deep, dense & compact started to approach me, and I felt I could see a dark wind barreling through the distance, funneling together, and swiftly snaking towards me – and this deep sound was intensifying as it grew closer. I didn’t fear it because I felt confident that I was safe because whatever evil it was, I knew I was protected through God. The deep sound and wind blew into me, blowing past me like I was a strong tree standing strong during a gust of wind. I remember smiling because it wasn’t as bad as I thought it could be – and I spoke aloud saying “That’s it? That’s nothing” and I gripped my pillow in excitement as if I just was a team member that had just won a game. I know my dialogue there is a little cocky, maybe not the same anyone else would have chosen but that’s just some insight to my competitive but confident self I have against evil. The minute I concluded those words… I realized it wasn’t over. Instead I felt I just provoked something much stronger, much more powerful that I had previously imagined. The same nervous anticipation grew within me again, as in the distance I saw a massive version of what I just experienced collecting together. Darker, deeper, a fright train like howl, it gathered its own energy, and was at least 5 times greater than the first…. Like a title wave, this dark wind raced towards me and hit me, filled my chest, blew out through my ears and nose & mouth with incredible velocity – I kept hoping it was over, but every additional second felt unbearable – my chest hurt, I didn’t feel I had enough strength to remain….and then it was completely over.

I clutched my pillow, feared turning on a light in my bedroom… and then as opposite as night and day, my fear disappeared. I remembered the close cross to my head, I remembered the picture of Jesus hanging on my wall, and I felt like I was just a baby, an infant being held.

As I lay in my bed, I realized that I had been awake the entire time and it was not a dream. The entire day today, I kept thinking about that unique occurrence of last night.

I called my parents this evening as we set up when we would meet prior to an interesting Mass we’re going to tomorrow – it’s the Diocesan Opening Centennial Mass. I’m not an expert, but there is something about indulgences & graces to be given at this Mass. My personal faith has risen from neutral limbo to an excited Catholic – and my mother’s stance on this dream was that it falls so close to an important Mass – and she felt it was an evil force frustrated that I’m growing in my faith. What I described to her, was very similar to a dream she had about 2-3 months earlier when her faith & Catholic believes were challenged by my then non-denominational girlfriend (a breakup based on differences in faith). She urged me to submit this to Catholic Answers and is interested in your responses as of course I am. It’s not a question I have, but more of an experience I wanted to share. If others have had similar experiences or want to comment on this – feel free!
I have experianced something similar.

This was a demon or maybe even thousands of them who have latched onto you and your mother as part of a generational curse which is why both you and your mother saw /experianced the same thing. You need to read and pray about breaking generational curses to understand fully.

Secondly, God was teaching you about how dangerous your ego is. NEVER get cocky when you face something like that. Satin is conquered through humility and complete faith in Jesus. He is never conqured through cockiness. This is exactly why Jesus allowed the spirit/spirits to come back to you as soon as you got cocky. He was teaching you a lesson. You have no strength without him and until you let go of your cockiness in facing Satin these demons will not completely disperse.

I hate to sound harsh but this is not something you should deal with lightly. I would suggest talking to your parish priest about this and pray very hard for your humility and to break generational curses.

I do not think that the Catholic Church teaches “generational curses”. I think this falls into the realm of superstition and borders on the occult, and I don’t think Jesus “teaches lessons” in this manner, by letting demons attack us. He has better ways to cure us of our excessive egoism. Also, the OP does not show any signs in the post of being “cocky”. That is not for us to judge. I think this thread will soon get off-topic if we are not careful.

I’ve heard Baptists and Pentocostals talk a lot about generational curses, so I tried to find Biblical justification for this belief. There are a series of verses from different OT books, over time, that refer to the father’s sins visiting the sons. That last of the series refutes the previous instances, and asserts that the sins of the father do not visit the sons. So, scripture is inconsistant on this.

I have seen no Catholic teaching on this. The concept of generational sin appears to deny the efficacy of Baptism, at least the Catholic method. The initial exorcism should be sufficient to break any supposed curse. I also find the overall pessimism of the post to not ring true. The sorrowfull Passion led to the glorious Resurrection and Ascension. The sorrow we experience in our exile, united to the Passion, glorifies us. I’m not scared of ghosts!

For years I have had VERY lucid dreams, which are a you describe as a “mixture of being awake and asleep”. You feel, smell, taste, and see vivid colors. I happen to be an artist and very emotional, so I believe that people like us(you sound like an author:D ) are apt to dream in this way. I would not attribute anything spiritual (good or evil) to it because we simply don’t know. There is no way to tell whre the dreams are coming from: God, The devil, or a great imagination. I tend to think it is the great imagination, at least on my part. One wise priest said the best thing to do is just use holy water, and don’t make an issue out of it. Evil always wants attention…but if it isn’t evil and just your own dreaming, then all is not lost. you haven’t focused to much on it, and you have more time to focus on doing Gods Will.

These are not ghosts. They are demons. Big difference. As Catholics we do believe in Generational Curses because Priests will talk about it.

I had a physically violent house haunting (you can read about in another posting with multiple witnesses) that started out like what you are going through. When I first brought it to the attention of the church and proved it, they prayed for many things including to break generational curses. Under the advice of 2 priests they explained to me what it was and why we must cover it. I assume that because 2 priests, who also sought the advice of other priests when necessary advised me on this topic. They were VERY concerned about generational curses. Why they don’t go away with baptism one of them explained to me was biblical but I don’t know how. Didn’t care at the time. I just wanted it to stop.

I hoped that what I learned from my year and a half of hell could help you.

I am going to leave it at that because I am not here to argue with you, I am here to offer my thoughts and so I have. Please see your Priest.

One final word of caution, generational curses or not, you need to watch your cockiness / arrogance. It is still showing through and it is not good for your soul. Humility and humbleness is the best path. If you are headed in the same direction as I went you will need to remember this.

God Bless and good luck!

Actually he;s the one who said he was cocky and then it turned and came back at him. I didn’t come up with it.

I completely agree that Jesus might have better ways to cure us of our egoism but when he used this one on me it sure worked so I guess from experiance I thought it might be happening to someone else.

I think I am being misunderstood because you don’t understand my history. I’ve actually have been attacked, as was my son, and some others who visited my home and had to go to the Church. It is through the church that I learned about generational curses and about things like this that aren’t published in the bible nor anywhere else we can read about as lay people.

Anyway my intention to help came from the best of places. I guess I was just so excited to help someone not have to go through the year and 1/2 of torment that I had to go through.

I will leave this thread all together at this because apparently I am appearing hurtful instead of helpful and as a result am getting hurt.

I hope you have a wonderful evening.

Sara, please don’t be upset. The confusion about all this is part of the experience, and very common. It tried really hard to find something about generational curses in the Catechism, Catholic Encyclopedia, and apologetics websites, and they’re all pretty silent. All I have is the negative verdict of scripture. There’s an awful lot going around, even among priests, that isn’t very firmly grounded in doctrine. That could take up many more threads. (Anyone want to take up Medjugorje, The Marian Movement of Priests, and Vasula Ryden?) 😉

Even if GC theology were sound, you can’t generalize your experience to other people. There are a huge variety of causes for these things. Here’s a case that definitely would not fit into your mold:

The Victory of “Emily Rose”

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This is a story of heroism, grace, and the goodness of our Creator. Not the frightflick typical of many exorcism movies.

Excellent and sound advice!🙂

It isn’t really the experience, but the effect of it in your life i.e. drawing closer to God, deepening prayer, deepening love of God and others, increase in service of others, increase in virtue; those are the things that matter.

One other poster mentioned Sleep Paralysis. I would agree with them. This is my field of expertise, and am qualified to speek on it. The OP gave a text book description of a hypnogagic hallucination. Briefly, There are three states of normal consciousness, wake, Non Rem sleep( stage 1, 2, 3,4) and Rem sleep. When the brain gets stuck between wake and Rem , a bunch of strange things can happen. Sleep paralysis, hypnogagic hallutions and cataplexy are collectively called the Narcoleptic Triad, and are some symptoms of narcolepsy. Not all narcoleptics have all of these symptoms, and not everyone who has these symptoms has narcolepsy.

So to finish this up. Hypnogagic hallutions are classicly very frighening, very real (subjectively) and very common. They are not demons, ghosts or aliens trying to abduct us. This is not a paranormal experience, it is a normal, albiet sureal, physiolocal / neurological event.

SY, your conclusion that it was not a paranormal experience does not follow from the facts or your own analysis. Catholic ontology asserts that we body and spirit, which work in unison. The resurrection and ascension of Christ were physical events. That doesn’t disprove their salvific significance. Human experience is not reducible to physiology, and secularist attempts to reduce stigmata, levitation, bilocation, corporal incorruption, and other physical phenomena are often more bizarre than what they try to debunk. I’ve learned to be very skeptical of “sciences” that try to analyse a being that is, in correct metaphysics, supernatural by nature. Here’s a little reading that can broaden your outlook a bit:

The Lost Sense of Sin in Psychology

Nothing Is Ever Anybody’s Fault

Freud or Fraud?

I was born and raised a Seventh Day Adventist. My senior year in high school I attended an Adventist boarding academy. The girl’s dormatory was shaped like a right angled lightening bolt. Its halls at night were brightly lit - back in 68-69 it didn’t have dimming lights, and the floors were tiled not carpetted. We lived on the third floor and every night when my roommate and I went to bed we locked our dorm room door.

One night we locked the door and went to bed and were sound asleep. It was well passed midnight when we were wakened by the noise of slamming doors. Beginning at the west end of the dorm every door in sequence was thrown all the way open and then slammed shut all the way to the east end of the dorm and on the other side of the hall openned and slammed all the way back to the west end. The doors openned into the rooms, but no arm was seen throwing the doors open or pulling them back shut. No shadow was seen on the hall floor as the doors one after the other openned and slammed up and down the length of the dorm over and over again faster than a person could run the length of the floor. After this happened several times it stopped.

Needless to say everyone on the floor was terrified out of their minds.

The next day we were told that four freshmen who roomed on the first floor had been messing around with a oujui board and there had been some sort of supernatural manifestation - the details were never revealled. The four freshmen left the academy within two days of the occurrence - rumor had it that at least one of them had a breakdown as the result of what she saw. I know nothing about that, but I certainly know what we experienced on the third floor that night and there are no “normal” explanations for it.

Swamp Yankee’s post is correct.

The experience is known as a “haptic nightmare” and is commonly believed to have given rise to the medieval superstition regarding the “incubus/succubus”. The phenomenon, while subjectively and terrifyingly real to its victims, is nevertheless purely psychological in nature.

Although we as Catholic Christians are bound to accept the reality of demonic and diabolical forces, we are equally called to practice discernment in evaluating those experiences that ostensibly transcend the natural world. It is through the exercise of prudence in this area that we avoid falling prey to delusion and superstition in our spiritual lives.

To say ‘there are no demons’ is to walk the road to secularism; to see them everywhere, however, is to walk the road to Salem.

Sounds like wake dreaming and sleep paralysis to me…

When we sleep our body shuts down our typical movements, this way when we dream we are being chased by a bear we don’t get out bed and run out the window. Sometimes we wake while our body is still paralyzed, completely unable to will our body to move. We can also still dream in this state and see things like demons, dead relatives or anything else we may have drempt about. It can be terrifying, and when it happens the person can feel a sense of impending doom. But it is actually scientifically explainable.

This is where people decide they’ve been abducted by aliens comes from. They wake dream and fill the gaps and convince themselves of what happened. One prominent psychologist had this happen on a long (marathon) bike ride, but he was aware of wake dreaming and realized the aliens he saw were from a 1960’s show he watched as a kid.

I like your post—it is so true we have to be prudent in our discernment—part of that is getting spiritual direction, imo.

John Paul, I’m not trying to reduce anything to anything. I don’t disbelieve in supernatural experiences such as you mentioned, but the OP’s discription of what happened to him/her was, to my ears, a subjective medical complaint. Due diligence must be observed in things such as this so as to avoid undue superstition. I don’t discount the appearences of apperations or any such thing, but I would but clinically suspicious of any " paranormal" episode that occured upon awakening or at sleep onset. Marsha… your story gave me the creeps.
