I’m looking at an examination of conscience in preparation for my first confession (pray for me please) and one of the sins listed is “despair of God’s grace or mercy.” I have no idea what that might mean and now I’m curious. Anyone know what it means?

To believe that one’s sins are so horrible that even God will not or cannot forgive them.

Hey, Tarwater, I forgot to wish you well on your first Confession. It’s a wonderful Sacrament - I hope you go often to receive all the benefits! God bless you!

Thank you ma’am. I don’t doubt it’s wonderful, but it’s certainly terrifying at the moment. :crying:

Wait until you walk out afterwards and wish you had worn heavier shoes to keep you anchored to the ground.

You feel as if you could just float away, you are so light after the heavy load of sin is gone. 🙂

With me it normally takes a few minutes until the knees stop knocking, though. Then that blissful feeling arrives. :angel1:

I completed my first confession near the beginning of this month, and I was quite nervous! But I really enjoyed it. In fact, I’ve already been back…and I plan to go once more before Easter Vigil (just to ensure I’m clean before accepting Eucharist!).

Of course, some of the RCIA sponsors seem to treat us like once is too much, when the door was opened for me to make use of this sacrament, I’m using it all I can!

Now, as for you, as long as you tell the confessing priest that it is your first time, he’ll likely make you feel very comfortable. I know mine did! In fact, he talked to me for several minutes beforehand like a normal human being, not someone who was planning on being vindictive or accusatory!
