Despairing - 1 week and again in mortal sin

I had my 1st confession last week, due to be received at Easter, have been going to RCIA since September.

Anyway, less than 1 week since my last confession, and already again I’ve fallen into mortal sin. I knew I was going to sin, I knew I had the grace to resist it if I chose to, and I chose to give in and sin anyway!

Now I’m crawling back to confession. Most people go once a month at most, and even then probably only to confess venial sins. I feel pathetic, I’m not ready to be a Catholic, I don’t have true conversion of heart. How am I ever going to overcome my own sinfulness?

Needing help and prayers.

Well, I’ve been catholic for 20 years (ever since i was born) and up until july last year, i was battling a porn addiction, then i went to confession, but it didn’t immediately help, then i stopped for 7 months and then fell into the same trap again. But I realized continuously going to confession wasn’t going to help, if anything get some spiritual counselling WITH the confession to truly be more effective. I realized my own temptation problems were because of the holidays, i was bored, and on the computer too much. So i decided to do some charity work to get away from boredom.

So do understand, that you are Catholic, you have been accepted by God. Don’t go to confession everytime you mortally sin I say, or you think you have, pray, fast, keep away from what is making you sin. Then when you have had 1 or 2 weeks to re-evaluate and pray and stay away from the sin, THEN go to confession, that way you won’t be blurred by all the guilt and etc, you will have a clearer mind.

Going to confession everytime you mortally sin isn’t helping the situation. You will overcome your sinfulness by praying more, by not giving up, remember Jesus forgives each and everytime, and it shows you are sorry for your sins, I can see it in the post, if we here can see your sorrow, Jesus definitely can.

Don’t give up.
 
hi DL82 only through Jesus can we have victory over sin. try examing what lead to this sin,is this sin one of old habit?that makes it a little harder to get away from. keep going to confession and perform the penance gave to you with a glad heart for your are showing your sorrow and willingness to be reconcilled with the Lord.remember in the Pslams about flying to the Lord for protection,hide under His wing.keep watch what you are doing in order to recognize the things which lead up to this sin and try to avoid them early on before you become to tempted to sin again.may God bless
 
I think we all, or most of us have a particular sin that has taken root since younger days, and this root is soo big that you keep tripping over it, so basically the root gets bigger the more you indulge in that particular sin, to hack away at this root, we need prayer mostly, fasting perhaps and determination.

Eventually the root will wither and shrink, but it will not die, no, that is why we must avoid temptation at all costs, even to the end of our lives, because we musn’t water that root.

Evil root.

Don’t despair. Sometimes these things take time. Place your trust in God and keep reading and praying.

Keep in mind, especially during this season of Lent, the times our Lord fell with his cross and picked it up to continue. To at least know the sin might be the first step to overcome it.
 
Please remember that you are human and prone to sin, its in our very nature. Like others have said continue to stand up against this sin. Please continue the fight that you are already fighting. Please don’t lose faith. You are going to make a fantastic Catholic. I will be praying for you.
 
I just wanted to add my encouragement for you to continue to resist temptation, but please don’t undervalue Confession.

I heard the analogy once that there is like an invisible thread tying us to God, and every time we sin, the thread is snipped. But when we go to Confession, that thread is tied together again – but this time, a little shorter because of the knot, thus bringing us closer to Him.
 
yes, do NOT give up!!! go to confession as often as needed, and
as others here have pointed out – pray, pray, pray 😉
i find the rosary helps a lot!!
also remember, once you receive Holy Communion and are in a state of Grace, you will have that much more ammunition against temptation to sin.
 
Maaaaan… I just typed up a profound and meaningful reply to this post, and it got wiped out when I accidentally hit “Back”. I blame Satan! 🙂 Or I’m just a klutz.

Anyway. Of course you are Catholic! Christ came, not for the sinless, but for us sinners.

I’m personally in a very similar boat. I had my first confession two weeks ago (I’m also to be received this Easter). I managed to limp along for almost two weeks before stumbling back into sin.

This stuff ain’t easy. Even St Paul had a hard time of it. Remember 2 Corinthians 12: “A thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me.”

We all have our temptations. We all stumble and fall under the weight of our crosses. Just get back up. 🙂

Remember you’re not alone. You’re a member of the Body of Christ. As others have said, definitely pray. Pray and then pray some more. But you don’t have to go it alone.

Don’t despair. The fact that you acknowledged that you have sin, makes you more ready to be a Catholic than ever.

I read somewhere, “although the believer may fall seven times a day, the non-believer falls seventy times seven, but the worst part is, he doesn’t even know it.”

You know it, and have done something to correct it.

That is a beautiful analogy, and I really needed that today. Thank you for posting this.
 
there is a reason that there is usually a line outside the confessional, cuz we all need to “get in line and take a number”
as St Paul writes, wanting to do good and wanting to avoid evil are not the same thing as doing good and avoiding evil. keep a’tryin’, we’re standing in line right behind you
 
Going to confession every time you sin isn’t getting you anywhere, you do get graces from confession, but it takes more than the confession of sins, the only time you will truly overcome it is either through intervention or you feel true sorrow and do a perfect penance.

It’s not easy to do perfect penance, it’s certainly not, it requires a lot from our part and the eventual realization must come so that we stop sinning in that particular sin. But the good thing is, we musn’t give up hope, prayer is the best thing. But that being said, confession every month is the best thing you can do too, especially if you see the same priest, you can build up and get more guidance on your issue.

But waltzing day in and day out into the confessional isn’t a help. You will feel that the confession will completely help you and deceive you later thinking God will take care of it all when I go to confession, leaving you to not do anything about your sins yourself. Confession is a holy sacrament use it wisely and regularly.

I agree with this post. I ve been a Catholic all my life, and I can tell you, we all fall into sin (sometimes serious) and need to go to confession and start over. Don’t ever fear going as often as you need to. Confession will help you get back into a state of grace and bridge that gap sin creates with God. Holy Communion is also a very strong help to stay on the right path. Don’t get discouraged, overcoming sin is a life long journey for all of us.

Thank you all for your advice. I went again to confession and got some good advice from the priest there too.
 
Even very devout Catholics go to confession weekly, or even more frequently. Pope John Paul the Great went to confession several times a week. The more you go to confession, and think about your sins (having a guideline helps), the more you’re likely to stop yourself before sinning. If you find yourself doing something wrong, and then have a strong urge to had straight for a confessional, then that’s a good thing.
 
If porn is the thing that binds a soul to sin then BEFORE he/she goes to confession the porn MUST BE DESTROYED.

It cannot still be intact and in the possession after Confession.

The occasion for sin MUST be removed BEFORE otherwise the Confession is worthless.
