Hi, I’m sorry to hear about your son. I have a son who is a drug addict. I rely on my faith and prayer a lot. I also go to Nar-Anon meetings, which is a 12-step recovery group for those affected by a loved one’s addiction. If the problem is alcohol, there is Al-Anon for those affected by a loved one’s alcoholism.
12-Step programs are not just for the alcoholic or addict. These are family diseases and the whole family needs recovery; especially us mothers who tend to enable and are usually co-dependant. Since I’ve started going to Nar-Anon, I’ve made many changes in my life and no longer enable my son. I understand that alcoholism and addiction are diseases and I did nothing to cause it, I can’t control it, and I can’t cure it and you did not cause your son’s alcoholism, you can’t control and you can’t cure it either.
My son in currently clean and sober. He’s been clean and sober for as long as 17 months. The addict and alcoholic battle their disease everyday and they are the only ones who can fix their disease, we cannot.
Please find a meeting or at the very least, get some counseling. It will not only help you, but in the long run, it will help your son as well.
