Hello all,

I was listening to one of the EWTN Catholic radio programs on my local station last week. I heard one of the show hosts speak about how our spiritual body despises carrying the Cross because of the immense sacrifice it requires. I think he was quoting one of the saints? Does anyone know if one of the saints wrote specifically on this topic of a Christian “despising the Cross”? Or have anyone of you read about it on a website or in a book? When I try to Google this phrase, all that comes up is stuff about Christian discrimination.

Normally I wouldn’t ask something so vague, but what this guy said really spoke to me. I have always felt like embracing the Cross is scary and something my spiritual nature tries to reject because I always want to take the easy road.

Thank you for your help

Sorry I don’t know of any particular source on spiritually despising the cross but I just took part in a particularly moving Stations of the Cross written by Clarence Enzler . Station 5 - Simon Helps Jesus, is very moving and I can connect with the fact that you know Simon was pressed into helping Jesus carry the cross, he did not carry it willingly. Is it not St Paul who says that the soul is willing but the flesh is weak? I would venture to guess that unless there is some other reason, that it is actually not your spiritual nature that despises the cross it is actually your flesh. But because we do not carry a physical cross that can be a little confusing. I will quote here the 5th station:

“Christ: My strength is gone; I can no longer bear the cross alone. And so the Legionnaires make Simon give me aid. This Simon is like you… each time you lift some burden from another back you lift as with your very hand the cross’s awful weight that crushes me”
I reply: Lord, make me realize that every time I wipe a dish, pick up an object off the floor…or lend my hand in any way- it matters not to whom- my name is Simon" .
Hope this helps.
